I know, I know... I haven't done much work on any of my other modelling projects lately. Warhammer Quest: Silver Tower has recently jumped the queue on my painting desk as it's a damn good game, and getting more playtime than any other miniatures in my house at the moment wink.gif

So, this project diary will be for my gradual progress through the Silver Tower box - working on some of my favourite plastic figures that GW has produced so far. It's about time that Tzeentch got some decent new figures...

As far as painting goes, I'm extremely rusty - I think that these are actually the first models I've painted since January. I've assembled a few things (WoK and Alpha Legion models), but my paints have all been packed away for months.

There are a few minor conversions to several figures - despite their one-pose design, I seem to be deathly allergic to assembling models in the way they were intended to go together. Also, duplicates of model poses seem a bit too 1990 for my tastes...

I've also been trying out a new toy: a Dark Runes textured roller from Greenstuff World, which I plan to use to make bases for the whole set. That way I'll have something a bit more detailed than a sand base, but can add to the collection in future without having to track down specific resin bases. Here's what it looks like:

IPB Image

And here's the first (very messy!) attempts at using it. I discovered that "flat-ish" isn't really flat enough, and the slightly concave surfaces haven't taken texture as well as they could. Still, it's a good start.

IPB Image

Here's what they look like after trimming the edges back:

Then it was on to painting. Man, it's been ages since I picked up a brush.

IPB Image

Still some details left to pick out, but I'm generally pretty happy with them so far. I really need to figure out a better way of painting metals, though that will also improve with (a lot!) more practice.

IPB Image

Once these are done, I'll pick one of the heroes to work on next.

For someone who claims to be rusty, it looks like you used ample WD40 to loosen the rust Ben wink.gif Looks great so far!

Greenstuff World has some great things for sale.

Those bases look fantastic all painted up.

Great job matching the color of the tiles. Keen to watch this, the sculpts look amazing. How do you find the texture roller? Green stuff world have some interesting stuff, I don't know anyone who has picked up any of it locally though so interested in your thoughts.

I think my first mistake with the roller was using some very venerable (probably 10+ years old) putty... the other mistake was using it from perpendicular directions, which made the surface smooth but concave.

Rolling from a single direction may lead to an uneven surface that's higher on one side than the other, but it should still be flat - that's what I'll try on the next ones.

Product quality is excellent. Shipping time was also reasonable - I ordered direct from their site, as it was a bit cheaper than their eBay store. It's probably lucky I have almost no hobby budget now with an impending new family arrival on the way... otherwise I'd rapidly go broke in their online store. I think I'd happily buy just about all of their product range wink.gif

Rusty painting is mostly about how strange it feels to be using a brush again. Normally I can get into the flow of painting within a few minutes of sitting at the desk, but this time was more of a continual struggle to make the paint go where I wanted it to. Probably a muscle memory thing... I just need to make some time to do it more regularly again.

Try what we used to do in art when we were making clay slabs for pots.

You put two pieces of wood of equal thickness either side of what you're rolling. Then you can roll back and forth and you'll always get a flat result:

It's interesting. Seeing those rollers just now, I just realised how they do them. Could be fun trying to make some of my own.

Looks great Ben!
Was sceptical about the bases, but you really nailed it with the colour choices.
Will watch eagerly.

I should have posted a large disclaimer before mentioning them by name smile.gif If you haven't looked at their site before, it's potentially a black hole of hobby purchases...

I should be wink.gif As it happens, Krefey / Laser Shark Designs have just started selling them - if you want to pick some up from a local supplier, they're pretty handy. I have no commercial interest, but it's nice to see a local stockist at last biggrin.gif

Very slow progress on the modelling front, but I've managed to get a second batch of bases ready. This time I just held each base in place with blutack, roughly flattened the putty with my hands, and then used the flat roller in one direction only. Moving the textured roller away from me seems to have given better control, too - these ones have much sharper detail on them.

IPB Image

(also, sneak peek at the AoS Exiles that I've been assembling... Dragon-cloaked Executioners and Dark Riders)

Not sure if I'm going to make my (self-imposed) Hoarder deadline of having a hero done by the end of June... I had a few evenings of painting lined up this week while the rest of the family were away, but everyone's now too sick to leave the house.

I've started adding a bit of colour to the Darkoath Chieftain. The slightly bigger AoS scale makes a nice change for painting... all the details are a bit easier to work on.

IPB Image

Starting to shade everything with a bit of purple and black, copying what I've done with the horrors. I like the extra hint of colour in the shadows so far.

Thanks guys!

I got some more painting time in overnight, and this is where I'm up to now. This figure is a lot of fun to work with - there are a lot of different types of surface to practice different techniques on. I've tried to go for three different metals, but I think the shoulder armour (iron) still needs some work to make it look more metallic.

He's looking great, I love how sinister he looks. I also need to get one of those rollers as the bases look great.
