This is a relatively small project (for now!), aimed at getting me enthused about painting again with something that isn't a sprawling army of models or a Titan...

IPB Image

Over the next two months, I'm planning to paint up the "bare bones" of a Black Spear Strike Force: one HQ, one Kill Team unit, and a Dreadnought. I haven't done any painting in the last month or so, and spare time seems to have vanished now there are two kids in the house wink.gif If I can paint a figure a week, I'll be able to get back into a bit more of a routine again.

Over the last week or so, I've been digging through leftover marine bits and pieces and converting some figures.

So, who's in the team?

Watch Master Torvald Silverhand
Torvald served in the Deathwatch as a young Grey Hunter; honing his battlecraft in countless warzones. A century later, he returned to the Watch Fortress to swear a permanent oath of service: leaving the Space Wolves to serve in the Deathwatch command.

IPB Image

Rune Priest Valtar Ghostwolf, Space Wolves
Torvald's mentor and pack-brother serves as the Librarian attached to Aquila Team Invictus. The priest wears the markings of Krom Dragongaze's Great Company in place of his former Chapter insignia.
IPB Image

Watch Sergeant Lazial Invictus, Ultramarines
A son of Ultramar, trained in the ancient Suzerain tradition. Invictus leads a close assault Kill Team, tasked with the difficult challenge of keeping the Deathwatch command elements alive...
IPB Image

Aquila Team Invictus - troops
This team is equipped for close assault: shotguns, storm shields, and a terminator with a thunder hammer. The team members are drawn from the Crimson Fists, Angels Ascendant, Silver Skulls, Iron Hands and Howling Griffons.
IPB Image

Ancient Veran Pelegath
Pelegath once served as the Chaplain to Silverhand's Watch Company, leading a Strategium command squad tasked with engaging the most heavily protected enemy command elements. An engagement with the Farsight Enclaves left him beyond the skills of the company Apothecaries to save, and so he was interred in a Dreadnought chassis - ready to fight on as a permanent member of the watch.

They're looking great!

Sounds like you've set yourself a goal where you can get the quality you want without burning out.

Looking really great, keen to see how it all comes together.

Can I ask what you use for basing? Is it just small pebbles and cork board mixed together or do you have a particular brand you like?

Thanks guys!

Basing is a mix of two grades of model railway ballast, and some broken up bits of cork tile (1mm and 3mm thickness). I've also tried to vary the heights of the marines on their bases a bit - partly to balance out how much shorter the MkVII legs are compared to the new MkVIII ones, and partly to help the characters to stand out a bit.

I started painting Invictus last night, and thought the black armour (highlighted with P3 Coal Black, for a turquoise-grey colour) was working okay - then I took a look without a bright overhead light, and couldn't see any of the highlights at all...

I'll have another try tomorrow. I suspect it'll need some brighter elements to break up the model a bit, and I'll also need to get a lot more practice at painting marine shoulderpads cleanly... I'm not really happy with the first attempt at getting the details onto the model.

Cheers for that. Keen to see the painted models!

Here's the first painting WIP smile.gif

IPB Image

I've been experimenting with different ways of painting black armour, and have settled on Thamar Black, Coal Black and Underbelly Blue. I couldn't work out why I was having so much trouble getting sharp highlights, and then realised I was using a ten year old brush... it's been much easier since finding a newer one to use wink.gif

Still needs some more shading and highlighting on the metals, particularly the gold. I'll probably add some weathering powders to the model, too - this is as far as I got last night, though.

Looks sweet man. I love that black recipe, I use exactly the same one.

Looks cool.

Not sure about the red stripes on the shield though - just looks out of place for some reason. Probably looks different in true scale.

Awesome job though - looking foward to the finished product 😆

Painfully slow progress on these guys, but they're gradually getting there...

I ended up abandoning the one-model-at-a-time approach, which meant everything is now equally not quite finished. Details, weathering (powders) and basing stuff left to do on these. I'm happy with how they're coming together, though.

The turquoise-black is time consuming, but looks much better than anything I've tried before. I don't think I could do a whole army at this rate though, so I'm going with something different for Arcanacon... painting the rest of the Black Spear force after these guys are finished will need to be a job for later on, when I don't have a 2-3 month old baby in the house smile.gif

Awesome job - forget about my previous comment about the shield, blends right in with the rest of the squad 😆

Thanks! I wanted to add a bit more colour to the unit, beyond the chapter-specific shoulder pads. Red, black and silver seem to be the major Deathwatch colours, so more red helps to break up the monotone palette.

Just realised that half of the models have no shading or highlighting on their gold details yet, so that's something to finish off this week.
