So far i've only had a few small games where we just used power levels, makes it nice and easy to make a list, and they seemed pretty balanced, but both armies were marines so they were already on an equal footing.

I'm curious to see a dark eldar vs marine game that uses power level to determine the relative balance.

I did do up a 40 power level list of deldar and a 40 list of marines and then converted them both to points. Interestingly the marine list ended up having a lower point cost. Though this is based on a beta version of a list builder on a website.

Power is ok for a quick throw together game but never play a powergamer with that system. It is basically averages the cost fo a unit (form minimum points and maximum points and gets the average and divides it by 20... as a rule of thumb very approximately.

I cant see many drop in games/strangers playing anything other than Matched play.

In the early few months a lot of power level games will get played as people wont really care and games will just be to get used to the rules. After things get more settled and games become more competitive Matched play will again become the norm. (Pockets of players might stick with the simpler version, but all it will take will be one idiot in a local area to say ..." assume every unit has every upgrade possible" and the house of cards will fall down....

I personally will prefer matched play. Make them think about the choices and pay for them. Just because I can make a Tyranid Warrior unit for 15 power, does it really need all of this all the time>>>deathspitters, lashwhip+bonswords, fleshooks, Toaxin sacs and adrenal glands... Or a simple nob squad with PK+combiweapons +bells and whisltes on every nob...(effectively for free).

I like power levels because the rules are made up and the points don't matter. You would never hear that someone lost because they misplayed or their opponent played well, it was always about how cost efficient something was or how something was overcosted. If the points are super abstracted then it's really not a big deal how under or overcosted something is as you're playing with ball park balancing anyway. I find it amusing that there are some people who like the granular points costs because it's more balanced but in the same sentence say that something they like to use is too good for it's cost or that something else is overcosted. It's one view or the other, I prescribe to the view that points have never really been particularly accurate so acknowledging that and rounding everything to the nearest 20 seems like a good solution. Also it means you get to play with all your extra weapons and gear without bowing before the points efficiency gods. Pew pew.

Some units are a bit more lenient than others.

Eg a 2 Power gretchin unit can upscale maybe +5% (in matched play point) if you go nuts.
but a 5 Power Nob squad with options can upscale about +100% (in Matched play points).

Min Maxers trying to "game" the power level system will seek out those units.

The last few min maxers i played against i just stopped playing against. It just wasn't fun.

I've thus far found the power level great for quick list building.

Some of the scenarios seem pretty awesome too, they often assume there will be a disparity in levels between foes and as such one is always the attacker/defender based on power level.

I prefer neither over the other.

Far easier to find a person who is like minded and play whatever. I like my shooty lists but lately (for some years) I'd rather paint a centre piece model and make a list around it.

The Power levels are great for quick games with buddies using pre-existing armies. I'd never build a army from scratch around power levels though, I'd always use points as the foundation. I can see power levels being openly abused by some, i.e taking the best of every upgrade and option. Each time I've played power levels I've just cracked out an old army and have just applied WSYWIG.

I think power levels would be good for a pickup game in a store where it is easier to just play a 50 point game than sit down for an hour and crunch the numbers for a 1250 point game.

Especially with the difficulty in actually adding all the points for everything individually. i reckon i will be writing all the points on the actual unit entries rather than referencing the back of the book all the time.

Power levels look good to me , a good rough guide for throwing an army together.

I'm barely literate and I've already noticed a couple of errors on that particular website. There are bound to be more.

Considering what he's working with and how fast he's doing it, i'm still impressed.

Just wish it'd work on my mobile.
