Ok shortly (after I finally finish my wife's 1,1/2 year late LOTR b'day diorama present, see here http://www.wargamerau.com/viewtopic.php?t=16785) I'll be starting on my Cryx Army for Warmachine and thought I'd share with you my ideas.

Firstly I've always loved the Corroded tutorial on the Brushthralls site (http://www.brushthralls.com/BronzeNMM/index.php) and have wanted to use this for my Cryx (or similar to this rackham figure user posted image).

I wasn't so keen on the Army Green they used for some of the plates, so I was thinking of swapping it for a bone like paint job (like below)

So changing this

user posted image

to this

user posted image

or this

user posted image

to this

user posted image

with maybe blotches of rust like this

user posted image

with this kind of bone look or similar in colour to the bone colour on the horns of the 4 previous images

user posted image

another technique i could go for would be like this

user posted image

i'l also like to combine some Cryx symbols over the figures (mainly for the infantry), like

user posted image

also looking at doing swamp bases too

also doing skin tones similar to these guys

whats you're thoughts?

Heres a pretty neat article you should look at before you start corrosion.

Thanks Zippy,

yeah i saw that post and have yet to read it, but to me the final look of that looks a little too messy and you lose some of the details on the model.

but i'll definitely read over it

I really think you should tackle one model at a time, that way you can spot any mistakes easily and each complete model will encourage you to paint more rather than being overwhelmed by half painted models.
Then again if you perfer the "production line" method then do whatever you feel comfortable with.

yeah im a bit of a get one colour down, do the next painter, only because i'll have my mix of paints clearly fresh in my mind. but i do agree it can get a bit bogged down.

Hey mate,

I was wondering how you did the bone? It looks flawless - was it a series of thin washes? Or highlights?

Looks excellent, and I was hoping to copy for a future army!

Thanks Faramirsmumma,

First I did a lot of research into what colours and techniques I liked as shown above (Dead Dogg off the warmachine forum has pretty much influenced me the most, see http://brushthralls.com/blog/?cat=5)

Ok so I did a base colour of Vallejo Model Colour 837 (Pale Sand)

When that was dry I then did a dark wash of Vallejo Game Colour 42 (Parasite Brown) in the crevices only of the figure

When that was dry I then wet blend between dark crevices to higher points with the brown again (very light coats of watered down paint)

And then when that was dry I highlighted areas with the Pale Sand again, or did a bit of wet blending to smooth some parts of the colours.

I'm tossing up to do some more highlighting, but at the moment it's looking ok.

And there you have it, only two colours used.

Wow!

Very effective and economical! I was half-expecting a list of ten paints "Mix 1/64 this, with 1/87 that, etc.." but there you go.

I'll make sure I copy that down for when I trial this on some 'Nids. For display, rather than gaming. I reckon it looks great as is, and once combined with other colours, it should really look a treat. Thanks again for the help.

well i've tried starting the skin now, but the vallejo colour (151 Model Color - Flat Aluminium 993) i got was real disappointing (you can see it got mauled when i strapped it to the fan to mix it up, but it still came out milky and transparent).

IPB Image

IPB Image

i tried to do a test on each model, (going from left to right), the first model has the base colour Flat Aluminium over a bluey test colour i first tried and hated. All the other models also had the Flat Aluminium base colour but the second model had a extremely light wash of black. The 3rd model had a harsher wash of black, whilst the 4th had a medium wash of black with some Tamiya Smoke applied lightly. The 5th model just had a light application of Tamiya Smoke to try out, and then the last model had a wash of vallejo colour (1046 Model Color - Blue Violet 811).

All models weren't turning out right, so im gonna try some GW colours (i havent used GW paints in like 10 years, so this will be interesting) being Space Wolves Grey for the base and maybe Shadow Grey for a wash, maybe mixed in with the Blue Violet and maybe some black.

Stay tuned!

ok i finally finished the skin, YAY! (it only took from last year sad.gif)

here they are in all their badly photographed glory (i will eventually photograph these guys in decent light)

IPB Image

IPB Image

IPB Image

here's how i painted them

Base colour of GW Space Wolves Grey. When that's dry, wash GW Shadow Grey all over figure with drybrush brush (dont ask me why, that paintbrush let the paint flow better)

Then when that's dry, I slowly highlighted with glazes of GW Space Wolves Grey, adding more white each time i added to the highlight.

So next is the olive green!!!

well I finally got motivated, and do you know what was holding me back? Computer games. Ever since I sold most of my computer games on ebay, my motivation to paint has surprised me !!!

So I decided to concentrate on a few models, ie all my light jacks, the bloat thrall and the seether (because damn it he just didnt look mean without his arms). And I zoomed past my green painting and straight into the corroded armour as well.

They've still got detail to be done on them before I photograph them properly, but here's a sneak peek.

IPB Image

IPB Image

next I'm going to concentrate on the models that need appendages stuck to them, because I just look silly turning up on the board with half put together creations (then again I do play Cryx). Here's what they'll be:

Hopefully this motivation will continue!

They are looking fantastic. I will be happy if I can get my cryx stuff to look half that good.

Thanks guys.

I stupidly forgot to ground down the Seether's stub on the bottom of his raised foot. But am too scared too grind it down now. But am after suggestion about whether i could hide it with something.

But I just can't think what. Any suggestions would be appreciated biggrin.gif
