I don't understand the attitude. There seems tohave been a problem with the previous format and they are trying something new. how does that equal removing it instead of trying to fix it. Well no, from what was said last year when the new format was announced, they were all set to just scrap the competition entirely, until Leigh and a few others jumped on the bandwagon. And Games Day has most certainly been scrapped. QUOTE They obviously haven't got it right yet but it seems they are at least trying. If they had fixed the event they already had rather than scrapping it and starting over with no Games Day and a watered-down Golden Demon, how much closer would it have been to 'right'? QUOTE It could simply be that the hobby simply doesn't have the history or critical mass in Australasia for it to work. It could indeed. As I said, I'm not privvy to all the information here. I'm just going from my own observations. And no, I'm not going out of my way to 'make this format work' because, as I already mentioned, I find the current format rather uninspiring. It's ridiculously bland compared to the Games Day format, and really just not worth the time. |

I think one of the problems with the old Games Day format was that there wasn't much to keep people entertained. If you were there for the Demons then you really had no interest in the multitude of gaming tables, or the speed painting when they had it. There was no use doing the shop because the prices were the same as retail, so basically you were constantly perusing the Demon entries until late in the day when the announcements were made, as long as you made it that far of course.
If you were there for the gaming then fine, but you probably had little interest in the painting stuff. There were seminars, and Forgeworld in the last couple of years, but the length of the queue's was prohibitive to most. I've noticed that other countries Games Days have modelling tables where you can be creative with a table full of sprues or painting tables where you can sit and paint at leisure or a variety of other activities, maybe we needed other stuff like this to keep the masses coming back? I don't know, I'm guessing here, or maybe I'm way off course and it was basically cost prohibitive to GW to put the day on no matter what activities they supplied? -------------------- BAZINGA!!

Insaniak, I don't want this to be an argument or a personal attack on you or anything, becuase believe me, I agree with a lot of the things you are saying.
But it's a bit sad to hear you say that the new format is ridiculously bland and uninspiring. I don't know if the numbers of entries are up, down or the same compared to any previous years, but I do not that there are still many people who have put a lot of time and effort into their painting for GD - including myself - and to hear you dismiss it as 'just not worth the time' is actually a bit hurtful. Yes, there are many problems with the new format, but we need to try to work with what we have, and make the best of it. It's up to the painters to try to make GD a good event here, and I think something that is needed is more of a positive attitude to all of this! We need to get some enthusiasm going, and people need to put some effort into creating an event! We can't have an event without lots of great entries, and more importantly great people. Don't say that it's not worth trying - the more people that think that, the worse it will be. GT was right in saying that one of the biggest drawbacks of the new format is the fact that we all miss out on seeing most of the entries, but we can try to change things - we have already had bryan cook come here today to say that he is ready to take many more photos of the finalists, so that is a start at least. A long way to go still, but a start! I think that more progress will be possible if people are more positive towards the whole thing; try to look for constructive things we can do to improve rather than dwelling on the negatives. And hopefully, with more people who are enthusiastic and positive about the GD, we will gain more notice - we need to try to work together positively with the GW staff who organise things....we're all on the same side, we shouldn't feel like we are all against each other. -------------------- |

I know the current system doesn't have the 'big event' feel that it did in the past, but I know it has made the competition more accessible to more people. I know there are a few at my local stores who enjoy just making the first cut, never mind that they are nowhere near GD quality, they still get some achievement.
I think the final judging day could be a lot more interesting, even though it is in Parramatta, but hey, someone has to live here... RoV -------------------- I refuse to engage in a battle of wits with an unarmed man...

I know the new format isnt perfect but with me working away all the time its the only way I can enter the GD. I dont care if I dont get thru and I aint scared of Gav and Glenn beating me. Ive beat them heaps of time in the best painted army so bring em on I say. Not saying Im a better painter than them but it helps to push my standard up.
I got thru to the regionals. I entered two minis A female butcher (Just took her of the shelf to see how she'd go) and a hunter on a goat. Good luck to all the guys who got thru to the next round. -------------------- Regards Aris

Finally made it into Perth GW today. Asked a Redshirt if I could take pics and he said "Sure! In fact if you come back on Saturday, there'll be a whole heap more as the entries from the other two stores will be in here as well". Might just see if I can do that.
Taking photos was a real pain. It was dim and awkward having to step around all the bags stacked in front of the display case. So this meant I simply couldn't get hardly any in-focus shots! And the ones I could get aren't that great. If only I had a tripod... The Mordor Troll definitely wasn't yours Zor, this one had only a good paintjob and standard basing. Besides the few pics posted below, there was a great Youngbloods Grey Seer Thanquol done with rich red robes which made it a little odd however, as well as a nice Canoness which I suspect I've seen in GW Perth's front window before... Apologies for poor quality of pics, I did my best! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() This post has been edited by Seer Master Sinigal: Oct 16 2006, 11:44 PM -------------------- +++ NEED BITS? PM me +++

Sylvia park in Auckland have recieved the figures from Christchurch. There is a Chaos defiler which looks insane! Honestly I think the defiler is a ugly piece of crap generaly but this is fantastic stuff. The only slight issue is in shipping it. The head has come off!!! So I don't know what the rules are for that.
That will be the biggest issue when dealing with such big figures - how do you package it in a way that is safe? |

Hi All,
First post so I better say something worth contributing. I have a dream to get me one of those pretty Golden Daemon awards sitting on my shelf. My first GD entries were last year at Chadstone but alas they didn't get through to the regionals, I was pretty bummed. This year I have had two of three entries go through to the finals and that alone has me thrilled. A FW Inquisitor and a Thousand Sons unit. While I rate my own craftmanship high enough, some of you fellow painters are masters! I really dig your work and I will be surfing this forum for your sagelike advice. I went to the Melbourne regional judging and my thoughts are that there were some really impressive models there on the day. *The previously mentioned Crimson Terminator "Darius"... spectacular. My favourite. The lack of any visible brush strokes leads me to beleive this was painted on an atomic level. *The Ork boss, wicked non metalic metals! *The Green Knight - moody and deep. Great fantasy style *Alpha Legion Chaos lord - a superb display of fine detail brushwork. Blending and banner-work that makes you cry. So, I look forward the results from the big day and I can only hope I cut the grade this year. Good luck to all and keep up the great painting! -------------------- "For vengence! For purity! I saw that Inquisitor. Very nice!
I don't mind the new comp. Having been to Games Day 4 times and won 4 Golden Demons in 02,03 & 04 I reckon the new comp is actually a bit better than the old one. I prefer the greater competition from painters who otherwise wouldn't have entered and I like the fact that I can peruse at least some of the entries without being jostled by photographers and sundry onlookers. I didn't win anything last year but appreciated the fact the I was up against everyone who wanted to enter - not just those who could make it to Sydney. Having said that Games Day was always a great day out and top fun so I do miss it. -------------------- Never interrupt your enemy when he's making a mistake - Napoleon
