Does Australia have a big convention like Gencon? Maybe thats what we need. Not yet - it's scheduled for 2008. GW could run its Golden Demon there and the competition with other gaming companies might inject a bit of competive life into the company. From what I am aware of the past years online reports GW doesn't have a lot to do with GenCon in the states, so that may flow on to here. Regarding the topic at question. I never participated in the old format as I did not have the skills to compete, nor the inclination to travel interstate to Sydney. I tried the new format last year and was left feeling unimpressed by it, specifically: 1. The amount of time the whole thing dragged on for. 2. The lack of anonymity for the entries becuase staff received entries and the same staff did the judging. 3. The fact entries went home with painters between rounds - leading to the question of touch-ups/alterations being made because no photos were taken of entries. I didn't enter this year due to reasons stated in the other thread, i.e. running a tournament same day entries had to be dropped off, lack of painting anything GW that was not for an army. And from what I have been told by GW staff so far about this years event I'm less then impressed with the rules not being followed. Cheers, GT -------------------- |

I'm new to these forums, I just managed to stumble on them looking for results from round one of this years GD.
Although there is something to be said about having the Golden Demon take place at the same time as Games Day ( I lived in the UK for 5 years and was lucky enough to go to the UK event), the size and distance between communities in Oz probably made it hard for a lot of people to participate in the Australian event. With the present formate, I was able to enter last year (And was lucky enough to get a Demon for my Duel) as I simply was not able to make the trip to Sydney. I was never able to participate in Sydney previously. One solution I was thinking was that the first (GW Store) round be ditched and that the state finals take place at the state Conflict events. For fairness, the Conflict events would need to be taking place on the same weekend around Australia. I look forward to seeing the Golden Demon comp evolve, it would be a shame if it died out Simon |

Companies the size of GW don't run events for gamers to have a good time. They run them as a marketing tool. Heya, Some interesting points in there (and I'll write a bit more of a longer burst tonight), but gotta comment on the above. Games Day was always run at a loss to GW. Always. They knew it from the outset, but it was their one chance to quote "Give back to the community" unquote every year. Marketing was a positive spin-off frm that process but was never the sole intent. I do miss Games Days. I went to every one without fail. But, for those of us who have been to a few, the programme and content just got a bit "stale" after a while, so they decided to give it a rest. I'm sure they will come back *one day*... |

You do and I'll make sure your house is barricaded 24/7 until the Daemons are over. Bloody French. And I'll help you. I had a quick question, whats the reason for the two week wait between the 1st and 2nd rounds? Surely a week is enough time, since they both take place in the same state...? -------------------- OT PREMIUM VIP Member Now with more fanbois. And drunks. Racist drunks. You do and I'll make sure your house is barricaded 24/7 until the Daemons are over. laugh.gif Bloody French. tongue.gif QUOTE And I'll help you. No no, what are you talking about zord!!! haha, I know you guys aren't being serious, but all the same, you and leigh have it all wrong - it would be fantastic if some of the great painters came to enter GD here! I would love it - and I would happily surrender any chance of winning anything for the honour of competing against them, and the chance to see some of their amazing work - it would be the most inspiring thing that could happen, for me at least. And particularly you leigh, should agree with me. You guys did the hard work compaining to lift the restrictions on the number of entries by any one person; if I remember, one of the main arguments was that by limiting the number of entries the standard of the competition would fall, because the best painters would be restricted. So, if we're talking about some of the great overseas painters coming here - isn't that exactly the same thing? WHy would we want to prevent them from entering - that would cause a similar fall in the standard of the competition. Who wants to win, if the best competition available isn't IN the competition! It's like numbat said, quoting steve buddle - GD is not a national competition, it's a location. GD should be thought of as a worldwide competition where the best painters available compete. ANd of course, location plays a role in determining who is available to enter, but it shouldn't determing who is allowed to enter. If painters are able to overcome the geographical obstacles then they should be welcomed to whichever competition they attend - they can only make the competition better! SO we should all hope for an assault on our GD by the french, as happened in Canada this year, or by spain as happened at others - that would make for such an exciting, inspiring and fun year of GD, even if we all got whooped! haha -------------------- |

IIRC, time for Tas, NT and ACT to get entries to the regionals. Aah of course, I forgot about those fellas. Make a bet? oh, reeeaaaally! I thought that 'accidently' bombing my house from on high as you fly over on 'exercises' would be more your style, haha. The only problem with that plan is, you would have to come up with an excuse to fly up to QLD as well, to take care of the REAL danger man! I hear there will be something pretty spectacular coming down to sydney from QLD this year.... btw, you had BETTER be coming along to GD this year leigh - otherwise we will all be writing a very angry letter to the RAAF air commodore! Nah he'll miss out - always misses out on the good things in life does poor Carpo.
Still hasn't been back to defend his Dogcon title (he won the first one back in 2002). Some poor excuse about planes crashing and investigations and so on. Anyone'd think he let his work run his life. -------------------- |

Well, I must admit that whilst I would love to see in the flesh all the European painters work if they came out here, I think I would still be uncomfortable about the prospect of them taking all the spoils back with them - irrespective of whether they deserved their wins or not.
I guess it comes down to attitudes on national vs international competition - and I don,t consider NZ international by the way... Oh and just to hijack the thread, (I can,t help myself) I proposed on top of the Eiffel tower yesterday and am now egaged *blushes* yep - am in paris for a week -------------------- |
