The trick with doing camo or IG uniforms in traditional uniform tones is that you run the risk of being overlooked by all the - oh look isn't it pretty and bright - armies. Works the same in roleplaying circles... no one thinks the guy doing a great job of playing the dark brooding guy in the corner is doing a jood job when the jester's a-dancin'. -- Ry - rather than dumbing down the camo to make the gear pop, why don;t you make the gear pop instead This post has been edited by tenabrae: Oct 22 2009, 01:43 PM -------------------- |[TENABRAE]|40k|[Hive Fleet Dryad]|[Feral Angels]|infinity|[Yu Jing]|alkemy|[Aurlock Nation]|

What about getting some dragon decals printed? Then all you have to do is paint the shoulder pad.
Gives you something to put on vehicles too. -------------------- Shop 2, 190-198 Mt Dandenong Rd, Croydon VIC 3136 (Cnr Mt Dandenong Rd & Civic Square) Ph. 03 8215 9344 www.realmoflegends.com.au |

Like the base Ry, you've painted that a treat.
The model looks good. I know you too well to bother wasting my time suggesting any additions coz you're a stubborn bastage. Good luck with it matey. |

QUOTE I know you too well to bother wasting my time suggesting any additions coz you're a stubborn bastage. from your lips to God's ears.... I'll bring him along to the club on saturday for an up close and personal guys. Basically guys, i appreciate the inputs and i'll certainly take a lot of it on if Plan A doesn't work out to my satisfaction. But as Chris said, once it's mind up time with me, i'm pretty much set on course. Plan A is realism and not conventional mini painting techniques from here on in. I don't want the bright popping detail as to me it would seem odd for a camo'd up grunt trying to blend into the scenery with a bright red white green shoulder pad or garish looking chainsword saying "here i am, shoot me in the face!" We'll see how they look when the squad is up. To make the army stand out, i have some ideas for display boards and personalisation down the track that should make it stand out a bit but to be honest, all i'm battling for here is the gumby for JD. Welsh Flags will be freehanded on banners and possibly on tanks down the track. Conversions will be made with Guardsmen taking shots from behind stumps etc on the bases. |

Cheers Chris.
Ok, the hangover is receeding and the Arc rego is done so i can chill for a bit and come back to this. As you can see these guys are pretty much done barring some finer detail. The White rectangle on the shoulderpads is reserved for some kind of Company marking that i haven't decided on yet. I changed the Sergeant's tunic highlight as the Scorpion Green didn't do it for me so i went back to the initial basecoat of Tausept. I then lost all resistance to my initial intentions and: * could ... .not.....resist.....Devlan .....Mud....* Gahhh!! Washed one of the minis with Devlan and loved the results. It tied the Camo scheme together and gave definition to the Flak Jacket and tunic folds/pockets etc. You can't really see it on the Guardsmen as their rifles are across their chests but you can see it on the Sarge. Devlan Mud for me is miracle juice man....i've even started brushing my teeth with it like. Bases i'm happy with. Simple and effective scheme and i'm knocking them over pretty quickly. The Grass tufts i think compliment them well i think and adds a splash of the necessary stuff on what is predominantly a brown on brown colour scheme (being mud and treestumps). |

Roy,
Didn't really do a pre and post but the only change to this picture is the change of the highlight on the tunic edges and eye detail. The rest of the mini is the same. ![]() ![]() when you said "side by side2 you meant vertically yes? |

Well it looks like Sunday was a pretty good productive day for the Guard Diarists (<that a word?) with Matty Blackwolf getting his arse in gear and posting some Test-Minis up.
As for me, i finished off squad number 1. This will probably be my last update for a few weeks as i work out how i'm gonna gear up my Command squad and source a banner off Mat for the Welsh Flag. (The ones in the Battle Force are molded with a design and therefore, no good to me.) So, a few beers this arvo/eveing made this quite enjoyable actually and the Woodland Back to Base-Ix bases are pretty freakin' sweet to paint also. I dig. Anywho, onto bizzle. First up, we have this Flamer dood. I'll give y'all a bit of front, rear and side ack shee un: ![]() ![]() ![]() We then have this Vox dood. Now for his radio pack thingo, going with my earlier concerns of having a Camo schene with bright accessories, i've given a Camo Scheme to the Vox set also. To contrast with the figure however its a different scheme altogether but uses the same washes and one primary colour (Scorched Brown) The base coat was Camo green which i hadn't used thus far. From the Front: ![]() ......and the rear: ![]() Also did 3 more expendable Guardsmen: ![]() ![]() And this last shot is the full squad together (minus the Vox dood who had wandered off to take a dump....or more accurately, was standing off to one side as the photographer was oblivious to his exclusion...). ![]() Well there it is. One completed Squad. To be honest, they come across a lot darker in these pics than they actually are in RL. I'll bring them to the club on Saturday for some of you guys to have a squiz at like. Happy with the scheme and happy at progress thus far. Just gotta keep on Trucking. On the plus side, all stuff is painted for next 3 Tourneys (][con, Heresy and Arc) so no other distractions is a bonus. Cheers doods Ryland |

Awesome stuff Ry, the squad looks excellent. The camo on the vox box is a good idea, and has come up a treat.
Any thoughts on changing the colour of the base ring? I reckon a dark colour would suite more. The bases themselves look great, but the colour of the ring detracts a little. And yep, my arse is officially in gear -------------------- Mat

Been thinking on it Mat, not too fussed with it as is. I usually do Scorched Brown on base rings but didn't want to do that on these as so much of the base is brown (Graveyard Earth, Devlan, Skorched Brown on the Trunks etc)
The current one is actually Tanned Flesh and i'm not fussed on it. What colour do you reckon? Black? |
