Well, I have to start somewhere so might aswell start here.
I have been considering doing a Luna Wolves army for some time now, but hadn't really formulated a plan until this competition opened my eyes. I have a current Dark Angels army that is constantly growing as I move throough the mountain of plastic sprues in my cupboard, so why would I want another army to paint I here you cry...... Well, my painting is constantly improving and I'm getting more and more Ideas. The DA's look great, but if I use any new Ideas it means doing the whole 3000 points again, so its time to move on, although they will continue to grow in the background I'm sure. So Luna Wolves, the Horus Heresy really brought these guys to life and I really hope to do justice to the books with my interpretation of the Wolves. So, how am I to run them? I have looked at the Chaos Dex, but as they are Pre - Heresy, I discounted this idea. Then I went to the Space Marine Dex and although they can fit in several chapters, the flexability to ensure The Mournival can be easily identified, I felt wasn't there. Then after several conversations at GW Highpoint, the new Space Wolves codex seemed to fit very well, and they are wolves after all..... So the List, as you know the Judgement of Legends is for JD 2010, so 750 army list is the way to go first. I am going to attempt to show the progression of the Luna Wolves with the various Mournival Members and their relevant companies. So the list: HQ will be Horus Himself. Troops - 2nd Company Luna Wolves - Tarik Torgaddon will lead this squad. 5th Company Luna Wolves - Horus Aximand will lead this squad 10th Company Luna Wolves - Garvial Loken will lead this squad Elites - 1st Company Luna Wolves - Ezykiel Abbadon will lead this squad. Further support will come from other squads relevant to the Horus Heresy novels. I will post a list utilising the codex in my next post, along with supporting evidence from the the interwebs.... Then will appear photos of my hobby space etc, etc. Please stay along for the ride and feel free to comment -------------------- Luna Wolves Diary - http://www.wargamerau.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=82085

Well, its been a while and in that time I have been delving through the Horus Heresy and the Space Wolves codex. As I said in my previous post I want to be as close to the Luna Wolves as possible, so the research was necessary.
So I have formulated a 750point list, This will then be built on to 1200, 1500, 1750 and 2000 points. So the list: HQ Kalus Ekaddon - Captain of the Catulan Reaver Squad (Wolf Guard battle Leader) Jump pack, twin wolf claws, Saga Of the Warrior Born. Troops 10th Company Luna Wolves - 1st Squad "Locasta" (10 Grey Hunters) Captain Garvial Loken - Mark of the Wolfen, Brother Tibor - Meltagun. Brother Mau - Meltagun, Nero Vipus - powerweapon, Drop Pod. 10th Company Luna Wolves - 3rd Squad "Hellebore" (9 Grey Hunters) Sergeant Xavier Jubal - Power Weapon, Brother Elias - Flamer. Brother Tarregus - Flamer. Rhino. Elites Catulan Reaver Squad (7 Skyclaws) Power Weapon, Mark of the Wolfen, Meltagun Total 746. The list does have its fragility, but at 750, most do. The Luna Wolves will be much more effective at 1200 and above points. This is when I will add in the other members of the Mournival and Horus himself. So, whats next... Well, I plan now to paint a few test mini's. The heresy artwork has given me a few ideas although it does sometimes contradict the text.. I'm currently looking into 2 different armour paint schemes. These will be as follows: 1. Base coat of fortress grey, with a wash of devlan mudd, with layered highlights of fortress grey/skull white mix. This is based on the Heresy Artwork. http://www.totalwallpapers.com/fantasy/wal...eresy-siege.jpg 2. Basecoat Deneb Stone, with a Devlan Mudd wash, with layered highlights of deneb stone/skull white mix with final skull white highlight (Jordo Beale, cheers for the tip!). This is more in line with the text. http://wh40k-indexastartes.com/images/Horu...Heresy%20II.jpg Photos of minis next.... Dude, nice list, the puppie codex would work quite well for the luna wolves (or any pre-heresy list, may have to go back to my EC!).
For the colour scheme, i like the second one better. -------------------- Cheers all,

I think the second scheme is better, as the first is a bit dull, but I would suggest keeping some of the gold-trim/details from the first. It just seems to make them look more ornate.

Cheers for the feedback, I'll test out the trim details and see what they look like. So stay tuned.

Well, I've quickly knocked out 2 minis, not fully, as most of you know I work meticulously and take forever! So just the Right arms of some AOBR marines. (I find these good for trialling paint schemes on, before committing to the real thing.)
So here they are, as you'll see. I have favoured one scheme more as it was completely obvious this was much more suited to my army and looked awesome! But hey you guys let me know your comments. Just for the record these are only rough tests so mould lines and poor blending aside, its the colour scheme I'm looking at..... ![]() Test Mini 1, Scheme 1. Fortress Grey, Gryphon Sepia, Fortress Grey/Skull White, Skull White. ![]() 2nd View ![]() [color=#FF0000]Test Mini 2[\color], Scheme 2. Dheneb Stone, Devlan Mud, Dheneb Stone/Skull White, Skull White. ![]() 2nd View. I'd go with the second one Whitey. The darker recesses will make it pop from a distance. That's what painting a tournament force is about isn't it!

Good stuff Dave.
What sort of converting you going to do? If you go by the previous art work their helms and shoulder pads are pretty particular. i.e. Studded pad on the right shoulder? -------------------- *******

Indeed mate, the studded shoulder pads are something I will be doing. As you know they are somewhat difficult to come by, being mark IV armour specific. So I'll be trialling various different techniques in manufacturing my own.
As for the helms, nothing in the books describes them as having the romanesque plumes, but I will keep researching. Other conversions will mainly involve the main characters. they will need some specific work to identify them. I will showcase each one. Next ...... Bases. -------------------- Luna Wolves Diary - http://www.wargamerau.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=82085

Plans all looking good mate, I'm making my own Heresy-era army so I'll be watching this closely. I'm not sure what the protocol is for recommending stuff on here, but I've been sourcing my studded pads from a company called Chapterhouse who sell a few different types of metal shoulder pad, including studded ones and Luna Wolves icon pads. If you want the web address of my supplier swing me a PM. -------------------- |

That bone/white is going to look 4 kinds of awesome dude. I'm not too sure about that gold though as it is a little too bright against the bone/white when you look at the sketch you've linked in above. I'd think you need a more muted gold/bronze colour. Have a look at the Formula P3 blighted gold. You should be able to get it at Mind Games in the City. That would go well with the Bone/White I'd think

Panzerallan - PM on its way Cheers!
Jordo - I'm in agreeance about the gold, it is very bright so a more muted colour will be looked at. Will check out the paints. Dedhed - point taken, as mentioned these were quickly knocked out for ideas rather than for painting ability showcase. The real mccoy will be much better, stay tuned! Cheers for the feed back guys! -------------------- Luna Wolves Diary - http://www.wargamerau.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=82085
