If I could please ask everyone to not quote my whole posts. You can just reply I will most likely work out what your getting at. If you do want to quote my post just quote the relevant sections please.

Saves on horrible quote pyramids and huge scrolls to get to the information in the post.

Hey all,

Well about 5 weeks ago as most people would know the Space Wolves received their long awaited update and modernising.

It had been my plan since i first started 40k with my chaos about 5 years ago to start Wolves as my army and unfortunately an increase in time spent at work and the update gave me the excuse. And so begins my trek with the Sons of Fenris.

So to start things off i waited until my birthday at the end of october to maximise funding and placed the order online with **please don't promote non-sponsor business** ( I couldn't refuse the savings with the exchange rate at the time) and after a bit of an afternoon nap after a rough weekend and monday. I awoke pleasently to a rather large package from the United Kingdom.

This is the beginning of my Wolves army and Ragnar's Great Company.

IPB Image

The above photo contains:

3 Battleforces
2 Devastator Boxes
2 Assault Squad Boxes
2 Land Speeders
3 Terminator Wolf Guard boxes
Canis Wolfborn
Njal Stormcaller
Logan Grimnar
Lukas The Trickster
Rune Priest Blister

The above is practically my Infantry for now complete, and combined with the other bits that i have slowly bought from ebay and here in the BSS Forum, i should be good to kit infantry, although i will probably buy more in the end (can't deny the awesome battleforce).

I am already in the process of planning my armoured components that I am wanting to purchase for this army, and have only come up with 2 more Land speeders and 2 Rhinos. Everything else is up in the air so any advice is welcome. Will most likely place an order after christmas and should round off my army, save the painting.

Anyway will update when i can, will be starting assembling tonight, not entirely sure where to start but will get pics up when i can biggrin.gif

Cheers,
Ty.

Just a quick update, no new pictures though.

Spent last night and the beginning of today clipping everything from sprues, i still have 2 battleforces to go and a landspeeder, although the other land speeder is assembled biggrin.gif

Will try to get pics of all the pieces when i have removed everything from the sprue.

Okay so some more pictures, this is all the infantry clipped off the sprues, i still have the 3 drop pods and 2 land speeders on their sprue, but will do them seperately to ease the pain of doing infantry over and over.

To give an idea of scale each of these trays is 12 cm x 7 cm x 4 cm.

IPB Image

IPB Image

Currently not assembling the infantry as i need to decide on the style of base i want to do. Was considering doing sort of ice bergs floating in water, but don't have any idea on how to do them. Any ideas on how to do the previous idea or other ideas are welcome biggrin.gif

Also working on a True Scale marine for a Secret santa from Librarium online, he is coming along well, might get some photos of him up when i can biggrin.gif.

Stay tuned.

Okay new update, I haven't been working on my wolves as i just had to bits purchase a few things i needed for them, namely combi melta's for my wolf guard. In that purchasing i managed to get 8 more assault marine legs which will make more wolves and make squads nice and dynamic.

But what i have been doing is working on my True Scale Power Armour Plague Marine Lord. It is my first attempt at true scaling and a use of green stuff beyond gap filling.

Here are a few pics to show you progress.

IPB Image

IPB Image

I'm just did the chest greenstuffing so i am letting it sit til tomorrow so it sets. Then i'll start adding the details to it, am going to attempt to sculpt a nurgle symbol on one shoulder bad and a chaos star for the other.

Will also be using guitar string in the torso to replicate the CSM torsos and giving him a belt.

Comments, criticism and advice are all welcome.

Okay new update;

Still awaiting my remaning space marine pieces before i start on my Wolves. Although i am still undecided about their bases which may slow down the construction process.

At the moment tossing up between doing an ash waste kind of city fight ruins with dead grass base. Or glaciers using water effects to make it look like they are standing on ice bergs. Any votes or other ideas would be nice biggrin.gif

That aside the construction of my True Scale Plague Lord is finished, he is close to being on track but i really don't think he will get delivered before christmas, maybe just after. Anyway these are the pics of him completed.

IPB Image

IPB Image

Just gotta put the chaos champion backpack on him (which is in the process of being stripped) spray him and then get painting.

I feel he has come up quite nicely for a first attempt at True Scaling and the first attempt at a large use of greenstuff.

C & C is welcome, as always.

Ty.

VERY impressive work on the True Scale Marine, he looks fantastic. The area where the guitar wire joins up with the chest plate could use a bit of refining, it doesn't look very connected atm. But that's just a tiny detail on what is a really nice model.

Your True scale marine looks very impressive! Your manipulation with greenstuff for your first real time is excellent, and I give you praise for getting the right effect without fingerprints or tool dents!

Back to the first pic: I think I sat for like 10min in full jealousy of that payload!

Thanks for the praise guys, i am very happy with the true scale marine. Hopefully the lucky queenslander who is to receive it in the secret santa competition will be happy with it too.

Will hopefully get some spray paint on him either today or tomorrow and then start work on the painting of him. Although i need to work out a way to do some weathering on him, kind of like oil spills or scorch marks, thinking various washes or glazes will do, but it will take some experimenting i think.

Also an update on my wolves, i hopefully will receive the remaining bits I am waiting on either today or tomorrow which will let me start the army, still needing basing ideas, but i think urban is the way to go.

Help with basing ideas would be awesome biggrin.gif

Okay update time.

So i spent the day playing a 40k game, which was pretty awesome it has been about 4 months since i got a chance to play due to my mates being either O/S, working or otherwise consumed.

Was good fun, about a 3.5k game, took 4-5 hours, was my Chaos Army (most unpainted unfortunately due to me stripping everything to start again) and my mates necrons against a LoganWing and Suit heavy tau. Ending up playing annihilation, and won but managed to lose 7/8 of my forces and like 2 necron troopers. Was good to play again.

On the modelling side of things, received the rest of the bits in the mail for me today which was another combi melta and 5 more assault legs. So i have been pondering on my breakdown the 90 infantry models i will have. Here is what i have come up with so far:

- 10 x Grey Hunters
- 10 x Grey Hunters
- 10 x Sky Claws
- 10 x Blood Claws
- 10 x Models dedicated to either Wolf Guard or Power Armour HQ choices.
- 10 x Long Fangs

So the above is definate and leaves me with 30 more models to decide what they shall be.

I have been considering 10 more Sky Claws, Blood Claws and Grey Hunters. I think that could be a decent spread amongst all sorts of troops and gives me a heap of alternatives with list writing.

The only other thing i was considering was 20 more Blood Claws to make 2 squads of 15 x Bloodclaws and 10 more Grey Hunters.

Any ideas or suggestions would be awesome as to where i can use the remaining 30 of my marines.

Ps. Almost forgot, got some spray on my True Scale Marine, will be starting the paint on him tomorrow, going for the traditional Death Guard Paint Scheme, i think that is probably the safest bet to allow him to be easily recognised.

Update time:

So i haven't really had a chance to figure out my wolves configuration at the moment, but i have started so that is a plus, i did actually get pen to paper as to what i will be making with models i have.

Also on the Wolves front, i have narrowed bases done to either urban style bases, or my original idea of ice drift bases (done in a similar style to lava bases but painted differently). When i managed to scrounge some cork I will get some test bases up. I like the ice drift idea as it seems relatively unused and original, provided i can pull it off.

On other hobby fronts, my secret santa True Scale marine has now got some paint on him, I undercoated him yesterday after a horrendous event of dropping him on the way outside to undercoat and having to spend 20 minutes with the glue to get it back together. Thankfully nothing major broke and nothing was lost was more an annoying speedbump then major disaster.

Anyway i have started work on the armour and started to lay down the base coat of catachan green, will be working from there probably washed down and highlighted to camo green, who knows at the moment.

That's all for now, will get pics up of the marine when he has all the base colours done, and the bases when i get around to them.

Ty.

Go the ice bases mate, Fenris is cold as you know so i think they fit them pretty well and your idea sounds good, are you going to post up some test images of your base scheme?

I will be getting some photos up of the bases shortly as i managed to get some cork sheeting this afternoon so when i get a chance at some free time i will endeavour to get a test ice base together, and I will start assembling models shortly too, and get a test paint scheme together biggrin.gif

It's all close to happening, hopefully i can paint my True Scale marine further tonight, we shall see.

Update!

Unfortunately, i have had to put my truescale marine into some simple green. I noticed as i was painting him that the front of the marine after being undercoated had become chalky (which is most likely due to the undercoat can not being shaken enough) the back was fine but the front just wasn't what i wanted. So he is now taking a bath overnight, which with new paint should remove everything i need it too and hopefully not damage the greenstuffing, if it does, it puts me further behind but its more practice.

On the wolves front, i have being mucking with my cork sheets i found and my bases, they are looking very much like WIP lava bases which is good as that the method i am using but changing the colours to create the ice effect. Here are a few quick snaps of the bases.

IPB Image

Above is all the 40 mm bases done, and only 10 of the 25mm bases. I deliberately chose to stop at 10 25mm bases as they are finnicky to put together and if they don't turn out how i am after its easy to remove 10 rather then over 100 of the things.

Unfortunately haven't had a chance to start painting them as I only started putting them together late this afternoon and have been sealing them with PVA glue before i paint them.

Also does anyone have any advice on painting ice? I was thinking working from ice blue through progressive blends to white, would that work or are there simpler methods out there? Also any advice on painting the water would be awesome?

And last question, should i just paint the base as is, or put something over the black plastic to eliminate the texture? And if i should eliminate the texture what do you think would be the best option?

Thats all for today, will update tomorrow with the status of the True Scale Marines and hopefully a painted test base.

Ty.

wouldnt you spray them Chaos B then Codex G then work your way up to white drybrushing?

But anyway i think they will look sweet man, your doing a good job.

If you hunting for the ice on water you should look at smoothing out the textured tops of the bases into a smoother option. You could try using resin, Pva glue or water effects.
The other option is to leave as is and just paint it up as water then do a gloss finish no idea if it would work though smile.gif

Update time!

True Scale marine is back in business, he stripped fine without too much warping of the greenstuff details that i had put onto him. He has also been resprayed black and this time it has come out nice a smooth which will make my painting much nicer.

Although i cannot get painting on him until i purchase some new paints, my catachan green is shot, as well as a bit light so i might start with a foundation paint and use catachan as either a mid tone or highlight, eitherway he is back on track and hopefully i can get the paints this afternoon and start sometime tomorrow.

With the fenrisian side of my hobby, test base is done biggrin.gif. Using the cork as Ice i feel has come up pretty well, although i will definately have to remove the textured top of the bases as it gives the water a weird look, and probably invest in some water effects rather then PVA glue.

Anyway here are a couple of pics of the base i did, its one of the 40 mm bases, thought it would start large first to make things easier for myself.

IPB Image

IPB Image

Also to note the PVA glue isn't totally dry and i have just been experimenting with it so yeah this base's water is pretty rough.

Any advice on the painting of the water would be fantastic, it kind of stumped me, i know i have to paint it in reverse to lava (darkest colour in the center) but the recipe for colours is throwing me biggrin.gif

Any other C&C is always welcome.

Ty.

Id basecoat with a lighter colour, and not just straight blue as water is never really a 'true blue' colour unless its seen from a plane or from space. Maybe make a mix of scaly green, some kind of blue and some white or even bleached bone, should be going for a light aqua colour for the basecoat.

Yeah i am just going to get some spare plastic i have lying around and just do some test schemes until i find something that works.

The above recipe is started at regal blue and headed up to ultramarines blue with the last layer being enchanted blue and regal blue 50:50.

Might try some more green in their or just a lighter blue, i asked my family and they suggested that it needs to be brighter too, as well as the ice needs to be a bit less blue and more white. So i will start on recipes again when i get chance.

Any more advice on the water or links to tutorials would be awesome biggrin.gif
