Warmachine should be going up on the Conquest web page in the next couple of days and rego will be open soon so it's time to sort a few things out so we're not scrambling to do them a week out from Easter. The format is already decided (35 points, 32 player cap, one day event) so this is just to figure out how we want things to run.

First of all, I will mention here that this will NOT be an Official Steamroller tourney. Ash could only be coaxed back into TOing with the promise that such hassle would be removed from the process. Django has assured us that there will be prize support and Brendan has welded up a trophy out of a Cryxian nightmare, so the winners will get something for their efforts.

The Overall winner will get their name and faction (and the year obviously) hand-stamped on the trophy at the end of the tournament. You don't get to keep it, but you can show it off to your friends in future years.

During Arc WM yesterday, the issue of music came up. As we're wanting to entice more wargamers to Conquest, we are looking at providing suitable background music for the games, something energetic but not too loud. I know that a large amount of gamers are metal fans, but I personally think that playing metal during WM would be kowtowing to the GW perception of wargaming.
Seeing as Warmachine is made by Privateer Press, features a variety of Pirates and Pirate Zombies and has a Jolly Roger company logo on every box, I'm leaning towards Pirate themed music.
In reality this will translate to not just the usual Pirates of the Caribbean Soundtrack and those three songs by Nightwish, but a healthy dose of The Pouges, Flogging Molly and other songs about plunderin', drinkin' and fightn'.
Of course, if enough people that actually register for the Con want metal or alt-country or just peace and quiet to play to, we'll work with that.

Also, as a wargamer, role player and conorg, I hear plenty of rumblings about how the cons are structured for RPGs and wargames players get stiffed on costs. This isn't really true, but I admit it does seem like it when you rock up to a four day con for one day and have to pay the rego. I'd just like to remind you that con fees cap out at the $50-60 mark, so at Conquest you can play a different wargames tournament every day of the con and pay the same as someone who roleplays every session.

Whew. I know it's a lot, but what do people think?

You need to add Alestorm to the music list smile.gif

I'll register as soon as AON lets me... definitely keen to play Warmachine and Infinity, and then I'll fill other sessions with whatever looks good.

Don't forget "Last Saskatchewan Pirate", "Pitcairn Island", and "Drunken Sailor" by Captain Tractor. They also have several drinking songs that might fit the bill as well. biggrin.gif

See the last line in the paragraph about music. It's a semi-democratic decision. I'll make sure that the stereo/laptop will be in one corner so that there'll be tables a fair distance away from it. Should we go ahead with the plan.

Cool.

Ive yet to see any Con disprove this with a statement of accounts post event. Its supposed to be a not for profit community run event yet the details are not published. Check out the Terracon Tournament threads in the SA tourney section, Stu posts up the cost and spend breakdown in there.

I think the general impression is there are a lot more wargamers attending events then there are roleplayers, hence the bulk of the costs are be paid for by the wargamers, also over the last few years there has been a rather substantial rise in entry costs to many events, cons and stand alone.

As an ex-ConOrg, the recent session rise was mostly due to venue costs - we had our venue hire almost double over two years, and it's the main expense for the convention. Numbers are generally pretty evenly split, even for Arcanacon - although wargames are slightly more efficient in terms of space requirements (in venues where they charge per floor or per room, without bumping up the cost for larger areas like halls and gyms).

I'm looking forward to the tournament, especially as the Cygnar book will be out by then smile.gif Wonder what sort of funky Tiered lists are possible at 35 points.

Yes potential Siege tier lists are mouth watering....nom nom nom !

I know there are overheads and they go up, our club has had to deal with them as well. What i find, and found frustrating, running certain events at some cons was the actual money being fed back into the event. I ran 40k at Conquest for two years, the first year i transported all the table tops and terrain out of my own time and pocket, no offer of fuel reimbursement. I had to organise all the prizes and certificates, there was ZERO funds from the players entry fees fed back into supporting the event, all i got was a venue and some printing. The second year Conquest paid for a truck for transport, which was nice and covered off all the miniture events, but once again i was left with the only support being printing from a cost perspective. The players are paying a reasonable amount of money to attend, yet no funds were poured back into prize support. I chose not to do a 3rd year and lo and behold 40k at Conquest ceased, thankfully MIF took up the reins and now runs an event at around the same time and manages to completly fund itself with full prize support and 0% roleplayers.
Meh enough of my thread derailment, i will be there playing WM so long as no one screws with the rules too much by using 'funky' missions.

I'm not sure as to what hassle is involved in dealing with Privateer Press, as I've never done it myself, but Ash is TO, so he can decide what he wants to do. He's instructed me that if anyone complains too hard I am to administer a beating with a Jugger in a tube sock. tongue.gif

50-60 bucks? Sorry, that's a bit steep. Unless I also play Infinity if it is on a different day, but then that's 2 days.

Can I have more details about Conquest, as a person who doesn't know anything about it. Or a link?

Website (currently useless for game info, but it should have info on the location and date) is http://www.conquest.asn.au

Online rego as usual via AON: http://aon.arsimagica.net

AON is in pre-con mode, so games are subject to change... I've entered Warmachine anyway, as it's currently listed on Friday April 2nd. Registration + Warmachine comes to $24.

Infinity isn't listed yet, but Brendan mentioned that he was still keen to run it - if they add a one-day, 3-session Infinity event that would bring the total for the two tournaments to $42.

The other miniatures games currently listed are War of the Rings, Lord of the Rings, DBA, Uncharted Seas and Flames of War. Infinity and Bloodbowl were both mentioned at Arc, so I'd expect them to be added soon.

I've updated the tier list spoilers with some more info smile.gif

I was planning to play Trollbloods, but might save them for later in the year when their book is out. I'm intrigued by a bunch of potential Cygnar lists that I can't actually field at the moment, and which generally don't have things like Squires or Mercs in them. Plus, I like Chainguns...

The Siege one is really tempting, but could struggle with heavy armour outside of his Feat turn. Making Siege work without a Squire and Reinholdt sounds like a good challenge though smile.gif

QUOTE

I like to tell a little story about the last man who was in a sword fight with Caine. During the fight he was heard commenting on how crappy a blade it was, old and busted, not cared for, and on and on. Finally he asked Caine what its name was. Caine grinned and said "Sword." and then shot the guy 4 times.

Keep in mind that as well as tournaments, NWA will be running demo games of Lord of the Rings, Necromunda, WWII, American Civil War, Napoleonics, Super System and more across the weekend, so you can do some gaming outside of a tournament if that's your kind of thing.
I don't know anything about a Space Hulk tournament, but if we can find enough tables and boxes of SH, we can throw some games around if there are enough people interested. Brendan, Justin and I played some board games at Arc during empty sessions and the orgs encouraged it.
Or, and I know this is a weird suggestion, you could sign up for some roleplaying. C'mon try it. All the cool kids are doing it...
