Few mates of mine are keen to start playing some board games with a big strategy element, like risk and stuff... was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about different games we could try?

The Axis and Allies boardgames are the go. Combine strategy with, leaving aside the D-Day and Bulge games, economic choices about where to put your resources. Some of the games are multi-player and add the element of coordination - if you don't buy the right stuff, make a good plan and stick to it, in these games you are gone.

Fury of Dracula.

Not military strategy but extreme psycholgical profiling and second guessing. Which in wargaming terms equates to outmanovering an army based on it's commanders.

One of my favorites of all time. (both old and new, but the new one is pretty damn cool)

World in flames if you want an an epic WW2 strategy game
It is one of the few WW2 games where you actually need to plan
air , land and sea campaigns, ir planes are not simply another land unit
they have specific roles.
You can play small scenarios or the full campaign 39-45.
We play every second friday night in shed with fridge ( for beer) and pot bellied stove when cold.
Hitler/Stalin irrational historical decision are represented by some of the th choices made at 2 am
after one too many drinks smile.gif

Shogun (rebranded as Samuri Swords) it is like Risk or Axis and allies - territory, income, armybuilding+fortification. It has the added bonus to replayability in that the territories are a random card draw between the players(2-5) and you have turn 1 to consolidate a position and then it is crazy bash em's. (spend the money to buy the ninja once people's armies gain mv2+attack2 or better.... wink.gif )

Nerdy and not a military strategy game, but the best strategic style game I 've played in years is Railways of the World. So cuthroat and fun, and every single person I've introduced it to (even non-boardgame types) have loved it and got addicted. Also, you can play with 2-6 players.

www.boardgamegeek.com is your best friend when it comes to boardgames. Every game has reviews for it on the site.

My recommendations are going to be games that are fairly easy to pick up for newbie, but have a fiar amount of depth.

My suggestion as a starting out game would be Chaos in the Old World. Fairly simple rules wise, but plays with a lot of strategy between the four gods playing quite differently and the board being semi-random and has a lot of replayability.

Settlers is a classic, can be bought now in most toy shops as well as hobby stores, and is also simple enough to learn with a fair amount of strategy to it.

Personally I'm a big theme gamer, so most of the Euro style games that are more abstract don't appeal to me as much as Ameritrash, but if you guys like them, I believe Agricola is one of the top rated games on BGG. Never played it so can't comment personally.

I definitely would not go Twilight Imperium as a first game. The game goes for hours, and the first play through will likely not work too well.
