Where to start? Well after pupcon I had been firmly bitten by the tourney bug, and the next tourney I had paid for was pilgrimage and 2 months seemed an awfully long time to wait to get my next fix, so when I saw 2 tickets come on sale 3 weeks out from convic I jumped right on them and dragged my warhammer buddy Nick Gum.
So next up I had to finish painting my army I figured id give myself 3 days of solid painting for the furnace, 2 weeks later I realised I had 1 week to finish a doomwheel, bsb, 2 swarms , 14 gutter runners and finishing up the basing on everything. I managed to get most of it done, again spending 3 days on doomwheel when I told myself I had 1 to do it. Finished painting 30 minutes before I left to catch the train down to Melbourne, which I thought id be able to sleep on no problem having slept roughly 4 hours a night the past week with killing myself painting, only stopping to go the gym or eat. Also I should note that I was supposed to play Nick Legrand at good games in Sydney before we left for a last minute practice game. But I sent him a message the morning of Friday saying I couldn’t make it because I had to finish off some painting, which he didn’t get but by a happy coincidence my first game was: Game 1: Nick Legrand – Gateways of chaos, I mean warriors. I’ll be honest having slept an hour on the train and 4 hours a night previously I don’t remember a whole heap of this game so ill put in what I do remember. Turn 2 is definitely the most vivid, moving my slaves forward and at an angle with the intention of warp lightning up his dragon ogres so they will be out of the game for at least 2 turns when they charge them due to frenzy, not seeing his knights that just ruined my day :S turn 2 shooting saying “ I think that’s it, but why do I think Im forgetting something?” then seeing 2 units of gutter runners which just came on which decimate 2 units of fast cav one of which had a lvl 2 flickering fire spamming mage in it, which fled. Pretty much the best thing I did all game. After that he got me in the flank of my furnace unit with a hellcannon in the front with the now frenzied dragon ogres (what the hell was I thinking?) and just started pounding away on my poor little monks. Next turn for some reason my brain exploded and I thought it would be a good idea to flank the hellcannon with my grey seer unit. Needless to say the grey seer didn’t survive that little encounter, from there on he pretty much took me apart as my biggest threat was gone. Was a great game none the less and I’ll definitely be heading into good games more to play the guys there as I learnt a lot this game. So thanks Nick for explaining some stuff to me and being a great opponent. MVP of the game: gutter runners! Dunce of the game: Grey seer(and me) for charging into combat. Final result: 2-18 loss. Game 2: Brendan Roby – Bretts By a happy coincidence I got paired up against Brendan who I was supposed to find to pick up 22 skaven dice I bought from his friend bringing me to a respectable 26 dice! And lets just say that those dice were fantastic this game. Basically from the start of the game he couldn’t fly due to a few irresistible howling warpgales, followed by a turn 2 storm banner. I triple marched the plague furnace and shoved it in his face. And it managed to take out 2 knights of the realm blocks, 1 questing knight block and a block of errant. New found respect for this bad boy after this game. Ended up calling the game on turn 4 after the furnace had taken its toll on the knights. Brendan had horrible dice but was a joy to play against. It was the first time id played against brettonians and Brendan went through everything for me which was greatly appreciated, So thanks to Brendan for the game. His army was also beautiful, green and white themed, with matching green and white dice! I loved it! MVP of the game: Furnace Final result: 20-0 win. Game 3: Craig Cussans – Vampires Another army I haven’t played at 2250 before. Craig was a champ and went through everything the army did for me. Red fury, wow, who knew? Game started pretty well for me, I was able to snipe his ethereal vampire in a unit of spirit hosts with my warp lightning cannon turn one. Doom rocket murdered a unit of ghouls. And I shoved my plague furnace in his black knights face (not knowing what would come next). His black knights with vamp lord charged my furnace in the face and the vamp lord ALMOST killed the furnace in one go, by all accounts he should have killed it from under the priest and I was very lucky to have it survive on 1 wound. I managed to kill all the black knights around the lord leaving just him to attack back, and ~should~ have got him as well if my doomflayer hadn’t failed a ld10 fear check to charge him in the flank. Basically I managed to kill everything in his army bar the lord, a unit of ghouls and I think a vampire? I lost the furnace unit and a doomwheel and some other bits of chaff, amazing how many points a vampire lord holds! Craig was a joy to play against and definitely keen for a rematch any time. MVP of the game: Doomwheel Dunce of the game: Doomflayer for failing a freak check on ld10 Final result: 12-8 win Game 4: Matt Neild – Dark elves Another great opponent with a fantastically painted army. I went into this game fairly confident as I play against dark elves almost 1-2 times every fortnight. This list was more or less what I was used to however the lord on manticore instead of the normal black dragon and only 1 unit of shades was a nice surprise! Matt won the roll for first turn and took it (another surprise) . Matt charged everything straight at me turn one, I must say not used to dark elves being so aggressive against me, usually they just sit back and darken the skies. My turn 1 I marched forward to meet up, my right flank had shades that I charged with giant rats and they fled. I fired my doomrocket at his 20spearmen + lvl 1 sorc, killing 19, leaving the sorc and a musician standing there wondering what happened. He passed his panic check and that’s where the game changed. His turn 2, he fails every stupidity check possible as well as his uncontrollable manticore one, which was out of range luckily for him. But it wasn’t all bad for him he cast black horror from his lvl 1 mage onto my grey seer’s unit of clanrats, and gets an irresistible force, “ruh roh” Im forced to take 26 strength tests, and I failed 22 luckily I passed my panic check. So my grey seer is sitting in a unit of 4 guys meaning he can be hit by bolt throwers which is exactly what happens, he fires 2 rounds of volley fire into the unit and it disappears into a red mist. My turn 2 im thinking, ok its not all bad it’s a bit tit for tat, so lets see what we can do to swing this back. I charge his shades again which failed to rally and they are off the board, doomwheel wipes out a unit of 5 cold ones, after I roll a 15 for movement and im on the other side of a wood, matt jokingly says I should charge them through the forest, which sets off a light bulb in my head! Doomwheel only takes d3 s4 hits going through a forest, and its t6, I think why not! Get through unscathed and wipe out the unit, then retardedly pursued into impassable terrain which isn’t so nice as its d6 s10 hits. Leaves me on 1 wound and it gets cleaned up his turn 3 by black guard in combat. Matt’s turn 3, charges a few units, pcb’s doomwheel etc, then onto the magic phase where im thinking, “oh god oh god oh god” Manages to irresistibly cast black horror on my other clanrat unit which has my bsb and lvl 2 engineer, I roll MUCH better this time around on strength tests and only fail 19 of 27 strength tests. They thankfully hold but its pretty much all for nothing as turn 5 I believe he charges me from around 16 inches away in the flank on his manticore (which ive reduced to half wounds) I think hey ill flee I only have to roll a 5 or so on 2 dice I can rally in my turn and be laughing, I rolled double ones and died a little inside. My turn 6 I just got as much chaff as I could and it was over. MVP of the game: Doomrocket Dunce of the game: His freaking lvl 1 sorc! Final result: 3-17 loss Game 5: Shane Thomson – Bretts Up against another brett army I think I possibly went into this game a little too ####y after the first win, definitely played it a bit too loose. My eye for distances was definitely off this game also I fled as a charge reaction on my left flank with my slaves letting a unit of knights of the realm with a bsb, enemy in the way into my bsb and engineer’s clanrat block. That hurt me. I managed to take out his right flank almost to a man, whilst his peg knights and the realm with his bsb took my left. I was looking ahead on points until in a moment of complete and utter retardation I skitterleap my grey seer out of a combat that I thought to myself “I need to get him away from here or he’ll die and ill give him the points he needs to win”, So obviously the safest place for him is the closest unit to the doomwheel right? My shooting phase I test not to shoot on the doomwheel after realizing how stupid I am, obviously I fail the test roll up strength 8, first 2 shots I roll a 1 to wound.. and I start thinking… hey! I could do this! 3rd shot wounds… 5 wounds… all over, why don’t you just take 400 extra victory points. Retardation aside it was a great game, and Shane helped me out with some rules that I wasn’t sure of. He had a lovely painted army as well, not to mention red and white dice to go with his colour scheme, must be a bret thing! Disappointed I gave him 400 vps at the end for him to win by 200 odd points, which turned a 12-8 my way to his way. Great game none the less. Mvp of the game: Furnace again. Dunce of the game: Doomwheel and me. Final result: 8-12 loss Game 6: Anthony, playing Nick Hoen’s – Warriors of chaos. Nick has a fantastically painted army, unfortunately he had to go lose a soccer game so I got to play against his friend Anthony who had never played with warriors before and had only recently returned to the hobby so I figured what the hell lets make a game of it! Charged everything forward, my first turn I was able to get a 13th spell off on the 14 or so chosen before they even got to move and removed them. Got off a shot on the giant at strength 8 but only managed to do 3 wounds to it. He drew my furnace out with frenzy quite well after I deployed like a muppet with my swarms not infront of the furnace for some reason I can’t quite remember. I think Anthony may have a new appreciation for the furnace after it held up his chariot, a unit of chaos warriors and a giant for around 5 rounds of combat before I could come in with the doomwheel and other supporting troops. It was a great game and Anthony was a champ to play against, unfortunately it ran a little long maybe 2 hrs or so, and Anthony said he was only really there to watch games, so sorry to Anthony id have liked it to finish faster so he could get a good look around. I think the only thing alive at the end of the game was his hellcannon so it was more or less a 20-0 to me. MVP of the game: Furnace yet again! Result: 20-0 win All in all it was a great tourney my second ever, I managed to finish up in equal 35th spot so it was a great result for me. At the start of the tourney I wanted to do 2 things first was finish in the top 50 and second was beat Nick Gum as id been copping it from him for a month after he finished 3 places higher than me at pupcon. Nick ended up finishing 76th so I think we all know who’s the better player aye nick? I managed to get 3rd best sports for the 2nd tourney in a row! Definitely didn’t see that coming and I’m really glad people enjoy playing against me. Kicking myself I didn’t tick the young blood box on the tourney sheet as I think I may have been a chance for that prize, but to come away with any trophy at all is awesome and the convic ones are fantastic! I must say I did like the enforced round times as it seemed to make the tournament run very smoothly. Thanks a lot to the organisers for making the tournament a great experience. A big thanks to my opponents for making my games such a treat to play all weekend, and thanks to the “death train” for making me want to kill myself for 13 hours straight. I must apologise to my opponents for not having a completely painted army your armies definitely deserved more than that and like I said if I had another week I would have had everything done! See you all at pilgrimage! Dave This post has been edited by Tiny: Jul 13 2010, 06:12 PM -------------------- Tiny's trip around malifaux painting diary

Mate it was an awesome game - next time around you will be ready for the red fury vampire lord of doom everyone but you pretty much shot his unit out from around him or cooked him with magic...
You still managed to smash my face in if I recall - definitely up for another game it was awesome fun. |
