Full Version: Blood Bowl ORC team advice - NOOBIE

Hey bloodsports aficionados

little old me picked up the following for a handful of gold coins unpainted from a stall called Zeeb@y on the intraweb of doom
- 18 Linesmen
- 6 Blitzers
- 6 Throwers
- 4 Black Orcs
- 1 ball

To this I'm keen to add what's missing to make it a worthwhile team and as with every gaming endeavor there's something of a budget for it. As I return to gaming GW-style I'm finding painting endless hordes isn't working for me so I'm turning my focus to games requiring smaller numbers of figures (BB, Necro, BFG, Epic etc...)
I've always liked the BB concept and it's high time I got a team together. What would you seasoned coaches suggest my wish list look like? I've never played BB (aside from a couple in Belfast when it first came out but I trust as most GW games it would have evolved considerably in over a decade!) thus class myself a newbie. Putty to my fellow gamers, indeed.

All advice appreciated (and if anyone is in the greater Melbourne area please get in touch via PM as I have an uncanny amount of 40k Orcs who may sit in as replacements in trial games til I get the team up and running). Also what websites would you suggest looking at to mold a view of the current edition? Google brings up an uncanny amount of results and I'm hoping some of you know the right links to follow to cut through the nonsense.

Regards and thank you
S.

My team started as:

4 Black Orcs
4 Blitzers
2 Linesmen
1 Thrower

The Black Orcs are slow but they're tough. I'm still learning too, and have found that this team can work really well smashing some heads and hopefully getting a touchdown or two. Of course, against quick teams like Elves and Humans scoring Casualties is sometimes all I can do, as they dodge past me and run down the other end before I can catch them.

Good luck!

So you've developed what the Orc Playbook calls the "Fighty team", right?
Truth be told I kind of regret the purchase I've made for these guys as I added a heap of fellows from what seemed like a good deal ($60 for 4 Black Orcs, 4 blitz, 4 throwers, 12 linesOrcs)
For the same price I'd have got a complete team from Neomics - whose figures look great...and metal! - but little harm. I may simply paint them up, do some games and ebay them off again (works with 40K!)

So how's the league going? You getting many games in? The book quotes the setup you've chosen as running into trouble as the games progress, you seem to be finding that?
Are you still having fun though (which as a newbie is the big thing for me right now, much like any game winning is secondary first out.)

Yeah I'll back up what SandiDee's said. Black Orcs are definitely your next step. On the plus side, you can jump on the trade board here and ask for spare Blorcs from Fantasy and they should work fine with some weapon snips smile.gif

Long-term, the Orc team is a nice flexible one, which can run, pass or bash (the latter better than most thanks to easy access to good offensive skills & good armour). Down the line you might want to investigate Goblins and Trolls (0-4 and 0-1 respectively), but they're an orc team niche compared to blorcs & blitzers.

As far as which version to use, go with the current CRP edition, which can be found on GW's Specialist site. The website is: http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_Custom...ition_Rules.pdf (alternatively, GW -> Specialist Games -> BloodBowl -> Bloodbowl Resources -> BloodBowl Resources -> Competition Rules). This contains all the main rules, all the league & optional rules, and all the team lists.

Lastly, to tee up games, feel free to drop by on AusBowl. There's plenty of Melbournians there that'd be up for games, as well as a couple of standing leagues running.

Cheers!

Hello punkskum,

And welcome to the BEST game GWS ever produced biggrin.gif .

You can get the latest rules from here:Competition Rules Pack

Try Ausbowl for the Australian Based Blood Bowl world. Generally a very friendly bunch.

There is at least one dedicated league in Melbourne area. And I think several scattered aound the suburbs. They have a subforum on ausbowl: Melb BB League

There is also a tournament coming up in April (Easter Long Weekend) down in Melbourne. Great place to meet people: CONQUEST or CONQUEST

CONQUEST
When - 23-24th April
Where - Melbourne High School, Forrest Hill, South Yarra, Victoria 3141.
Format - 1mill Standard Progression
Contact - Joe Kano
Website - www.2011.conquest.asn....ation.html

As to your Team. The Orcs can take the below. Especially the Black Orcs and Blitzers are key to having a good team. The goblins and Troll you can potentially do without but add a nice option to developing in a league.
Orc Roster
0-4 Black Orcs
0-4 Blitzers
0-2 Throwers
0-16 Linemen (not alot needed - your 6 would be more then enough)
0-4 Goblins
0-1 Troll

Take a look around the Painting forums on Ausbowl and here as you can make very nice team (or just positionals) from 40k/ WFB Orks.

Right on. Now my first query is can players be added?
As in if I paint up what I've got (in time for the tournament is a reasonable assertion) can the Troll and Goblins be added later?
Thanks for the rules indications, too. Downloaded and posted to Officeworks for them to print them out for a pickup later this week.
Ausbowl bookmarked and I'll have a solid read about there to learn something of this new game.
Thanks fellows!

Hey mate,

Depends on the situation.

During a league: definitely. Hell that's part of the fun & challenge of the league: managing your team winnings to add players, support staff & so on, as well as dealing with casualties and & when they appear tongue.gif

During a tournament: depends on the format. There are two main formats for BB tourneys, ressurection (Rez) & progression (Prog). In a Prog tourney, then it's basically a mini-league so yes, you can add guys. In a Rez tourney, then no you start with a fixed amount of players and a fixed set of skills (you can buy upgrades). Each game is then effectively like a game of 40K (you can't add units after the game, yeah?).

EDIT: Saw D_Arquebus's tourney details in the post. It's progression, which means that each game you'll roll up cash & skills for those that have earnt them. This means that yes, you can add players as they come up smile.gif word to the wise, take an apothecary tongue.gif

Hope that helps smile.gif

The mini league I'm playing in, there's seven of us so someone gets a bye each week. To be honest, I haven't found it harder because the league is progressing, more that I am not, haha! Also playing completely different teams each time so it's a huge learning curve. The boys are all being nice to me though, and helping me through each game, and I haven't lost my enthusiasm (we've only got one round left, I'm somewhere in the middle of the table).

I'm thinking about Conquest - will still be a stretch for me to know everything, but that's the fun of this game, keep learning new strategies and ways to try to keep my line strong and pound the opposition! Now if I could only get more touchdowns ...
