Full Version: The dark side is tempting me (must be the cookies)

Hi all

I am being tempted to look at Malifaux and give it a try.
Like most games it is the figures that will draw me in, I am mainly a painter and those of you who know me know I am not hideous at it, so obviously there will be some figures and factions that have already caught my eye. I do like that you don't seem to need squillions of figures and lots of cash to play the game.

Firstly I would like to ask which factions are good to start out with. simple and straightforward is obviously a good way to be introduced to a new system. I am sure I will choose based on which I think is prettier, but giving me some suggestions for good started crews would be very helpful

secondly I would like to ask if there is anyone in Melbourne that would be prepared to run a demo game for me and take me through the rules and the system, essentially have a couple of games to show me how it all comes together.

I have the free PDF rule book, which is a little hard to follow due to the horrible stylistic editing they have done. I find actual game-play examples the best way to learn any system and they have covered all them over. I personally think this is a very stupid choice as I initially almost just gave up straight away as they edited out the most useful learning aspect of the manual, but I will endure.

anyway, thoughts and ideas for a total beginner would be helpful and will give me a reason to start painting some more figures

cheers all

I can prolly arrange a trip down to Melb sometime for a demo or two.
- otherwise- mebbe catch up for some demos at Monday Knights in Hawthorn when they re-convene?

Is stuff happening an hour or so up the freeway from Melbourne NYD and Monday at a LGS...

Easiest crews- usually considered those from the first book.
- especially :
The Ortegas for the Guild and Lilith for the Neverborn

What part of Melbourne are you in?

Yes, there are cookies.. wink.gif

Hey buddy! Yeah, there's some more straightforward crews than others..
I started with the Ortegas, easy to learn with.. point shoot, stuff dies..
Also Lady Justice is pretty easy to pick up and play.. You can add pretty much any of the guild figures to their crews as well so you can play what is pretty.. wink.gif

Umm Seamus is ok to start with.. a couple of basic tactics to get your head around, and you're good.. Rasputina isn't particularly hard to learn.. umm.. there's more.. Pandora would be ok, Lilith..

Avoid Leviticus, maybe the gremlins (unless you're really sold on the figs) there's prob a few more.. Marcus..

As for demos.. we're down in Geelong.. So if you wanna make the trek, we can tee something up.. Drop GreenMonkey a PM, he's in Melb and will usually go out of his way to have a game or several..

Pick up the mini rulebook though.. much easier than the pdf.. then you're good to go smile.gif

Hey mate, welcome to the game smile.gif I'm not in Melb unfortunately but hope you can get some games and decide to stick around.

Re the online manual it is cut down due t some stockists refusing to sell a product that is free online. Or such is the explanation from Wyrd. That said, the mini rulebook only sets you back $15 AUD and is very good for all the examples it has etc.

I'd suggest some crews for ease of play, and goodness of starter pack to cut your teeth in the game.

Guild: Justice or Perdita
Neverborn: Lilith
Ressurectionists: Seamus
Arcanist: Rasputina or (possibly) Ramos
Outcast: Von shill + Friekorp or Orphelia

As you say pick the minis you like. But if you like any of the above they will give an easier learning experience. Keep in mind that Factions are designed to be collected as a group. Not essential to do this but for gaming it does work better if you have at least 2 Masters from any given faction. So that may colour your decision if there are some of the other masters you might like to pick up. Also same faction masters allow you to use the same mini in their crews so cuts down on expenditure.

Cheers and hope you enjoy smile.gif

Thanks for the replies guys

So far these have caught my eye in no particular order

C Hoffman. I like the constructs
Kirai. Love the Japanese influence
Colette and some of the other arcarnists
Collodi. The puppets are an awesome concept
Von Schill

So you can see I am all over the shot, but that's cool, I have done that with pretty much every other system I touch.

Von Schill might be a nice straight forward " shoot stuff " crew to start with, then I can get funky and weird.

I am in Brighton in Melbourne, so inner south east. I will keep an eye out for the mini rulebook as well.

The terrain table I am currently building will hopefully double as a high quality terrain piece for Malifaux as well. I plan on making some steam punk structures as they will be good for PP as well as Malifaux, so when I do get up and running I can have everything needed for a game.

All I need now is more time to paint tongue.gif

Currently Colette and Caeris are leading the way, which is at least a couple within the same faction, no idea how they rate but Caeris is a stunning figure, in fact both those boxes are full of gorgeous sculpts

Cant offer you a game unless you hit up NW NSW Stumphy but can say you wont regret it.

Great miniatures and every game Ive played has been a blast. Even when flips arnt going your way!

Just started Collette myself.. takes a little of getting your head around, but not ridiculous learning curve.. Kaeris is a litle more straightforward, probably not as "powerful" but they do work ok together, so there's options for you..

There are games on wed (and Monday I think) at realm of legends. Or im in camberwell and can meet up, PM me I'm happy to give you a game and have quite a few crews but none of the ones you have listed.

You'll find that those you like are the harder masters to get the hang of. They employ a lot of tricks to be powerful - buy dont let that put you off!

Buy the rulebook for $15, its worth it.
Dodgeying up the PDF is an odd move, I think its them falling over themselves to help out, they are great company for looking after you.

Have you gotten into the storyline? It starts in the Wyrd Chronicles (check the left hand side of the Wyrd forums) and continues through all the books. I'm just finishing Twisting Fates now and the story just gets more awesome and crazy as it goes. Really fleshes out the crews, too.
Thats the only reason to buy the books (apart from a catalogue of crew stats) and you could get away with borrowing them to read.

Kaeris and Von Schill are nice simple crews to learn on.

They don't do too much tricky so they'll teach you the interesting bits of the main rules before you choof off into all the wonderfulness of more complex crews.

Collete, Collodi and Kirai are very mobile crews.
You probably want a read on how normal crews get about (and how you can easily outmanoeuvre them!) before cracking them out.
Don't let that stop you picking them up, it won't take long to learn the rules, its just important that you are learning the basic rules in isolation at first so you can see how it all comes together.

They are great models and really evoke their playing style.
Collete goes boomf! and all of a sudden she's swapped places with a buddy, leaving a dummy to take the hits or the Coryphee to terrorize you.
Kirai's very elusive but sends angry spirits in your face at alarming speed.
Collodi has a surprisingly durable crew, they can do a lot despite being individually weak.

Hoffman gets more flexible the more constructs you have access to.
So mixing and matching with Ramos is an idea.

Shame you're not in Brisbane, we've got a bunch of crews all ready to teach new players.

Check my sig for Kaeris and Sonia Criid, just painted them.
Will be giving them their first spin this week.

Cheers for all the info guys

Wombats, very nice paint job there, some of those figures have come up beautifully, I like the use of scenic bases and will be doing the same.

I'll probably grab the mini rules and the Kaeris box to get started, try a couple of games and see how I go

Kanhead you are pretty close, Brighton to Camberwell is less than 30 minutes I reckon, so I might pm you for a game sometime.
