Masters Invite Criteria 2012

The original idea behind the Masters was to help grow and promote the tournament scene around the Australasian region. During the 2011 masters the criteria for next years Invites was discussed. Everyone said that having players from all over Australia and New Zealand produced a truly National feel making the title of WHF Master much more meaning full.

So here are the new criteria for 2012 are as follows

- Participants must have played in 3 Warhammer Fantasy tournaments

- Auto Invites pass down to the runner up of that criterion in the event that the invitee can not attend. If the runner up can not also attend the invite will be passed down through the Australian Warhammer Fantasy rankings

Invites

- Warhammer Fantasy 2011 Master
- Top ranked person from QLD
- Top ranked person from NSW
- Top ranked person from VIC
- Top ranked person from TAS
- Top ranked person from SA
- Top ranked person from Australian Territories
- Top ranked player in the WestGamer Tournament League General's Ladder
- Top ranked person in the NZ Rankings
- Top 7 ranked people in the Australian rankings who have not already received an invite.

Thanks for your support, Lets make this a great year of Warhammer tournaments

Given not everyone has their state or location listed in either WaU or rankingsHQ profiles, and some people will change location during the year, how will you determine state representation?
slayerofmen
so someone in theory can be ranked 100+ and still make it in over a person in say 8th spot because they live in a different part of the country?

The State which is/was your primary residence for 2012 will be used for the state invites. Thanks to running the masters and participating in the ETC last year I have a number of contacts from most states.

which is the same as last year. Yordan was ranked 50th finished 9th, ranked 2nd finished 12th. so in answer to your question. yes it is possible.

It's very NFL style, where location seems to be the most important factor in determining playoff positions. Not saying it's wrong just saying it's interesting.

A good thing to have would be to have a standard format to run Tourney's with in terms of Army selection etc. Would allow people to know what to expect within a certain framework. I think this would still allow difference between tournaments (ie the awesomeness that was Book of Grudges) but allow preparation for the big one as well.

Just my 2 cents

Not quite the same as last year,

IIRC it was 3 spots not straight from the rankings so 1-13 on over all rankings had a spot if they wanted it, so 14th could miss out.

This system 8th can miss out because 9 spots are taken not directly from the Rankings

I can not think of a situation in which the 8th spot would not get an invite. 9th could be missed if the top 9 people are all from the same state.

Here is some of my reasoning behind the decision

The Rankings are very biased to east cost players, why? because that is where the majority of the population is centered. if you do not in QLD, NSW, ACT or VIC then to get to the masters you must travel interstate, This could come at the cost of attending/running local events because the turnouts will be less and so even if you win the event it will not help you receive an invite for the masters.

If the Masters is about promoting the growth of the WHF tournament community with in all of Australia they have to be given the opportunity, support and incentives to grow. by including SA and TAS I hope to give them the incentive to grow, run more local events and see them represent there State at the WHF Masters.

something to think about

Do you become a better player the higher your ranking becomes?

You guys are all way over thinking it.

Play in tournaments and try to win. If you play enough and win enough you might get an invite. If you don't get an invite, I'd at least hope you played a lot of games and had some fun doing it.

Love your work shane, totally agree with your reasoning too.

I am quite involved and respected within the Tasmanian community, if you would like a contact i am more than willing to offer my services, we only have some minor events held throughout the year, and only one major event, most scores are not added to any form of rankings system, and attendance to mainland events is low profile at best, I believe the number of travelling players has only been 4, myself and animal included.

The chance to prove that we are a state that can stand amongst all others is greatly appreciated and a chance we have been waiting for.

Looks really good Shane. As discussed I think keeping the ACT in with NSW would be the way to go. As it stands now there is no real way that someone from NT, Lord Howe or any of the other territories could pip someone with the access to east coast tourneys such as Canberra. So basically its a spot set aside just for Canberra atm, and I think Canberra have close enough access to main tourneys to not be disadvantaged.

Other then that looks really good, as you say the unless the top players are all from one state the top 10 or so from every year should still get invites.

So reading between the lines; the Australian Capital Territory does not count as a Australian Territory?

Im ok with it as I understand the thinking; but you might want to clarify that in the original post
Stom The Mighty
stryder is talking about a conversation we had offline. Just for clarity ATC is an Australian Territory.

Is there a list of major tournament events around Australia for the rest of the year leading up to Masters? Considering making it up to a few tournaments to see how I go.

Has the date been decided for the Masters this year? If I make it in I want to make sure I don't double book an interstate trip at the same time this year.

This looks interesting.

As mentioned Tasmania only has 2 events per year for Fantasy where the results have been posted on Rankings HQ. The net effect of this is that Tasmanian Players won't crack the top 100 unless they have traveled interstate to 1 or more events.

Last year we had 1 or 2 players crack the Top 100 due to attending more than 2 events (one being outside of Tasmania).

Currently an X Tasmanian Kaleb Telcher (Vampires) is ranked 45th prior to the M.O.A.B results being posted. The next highest Tasmanian I can see on there is Zac Lennon ranked 93 (Dark Elves). The Winner of our State Championships for 2012 was Cat Vanston (Lizardmen) ranked 132 and who finished higher than the above 2 mentioned Fantasy players in that event.

Anyway it is great to see Tasmanian players given an opportunity to compete in this years Masters. As mentioned it may stimulate more interest in Fantasy in Tasmania in the near and distant future.

We ended up running five events with three being counted for RHQ (they were trialing different systems for States and it was decided they didnt really work that well), next year we'll be adding Conviction & probably another RandyCon, hopefully the northeners hold another tourney this year too. The scene is picking up pace thats for sure, not as strong as 40k and maybe 6th-ed will draw a couple away for States, but still quite promising IMO.
