I've seen an awful lot of lists including coteaz lately. I've never really considered using him as I'm a bit of a Grey Knight purist. Is it because he gives you access to cheap troops choices? Or does he bring more to the table than just that? I know his overwatch type ability is decent, but very situational.

Hes pretty useful, iirc he is another source for Hammerhand and has Sanctuary which is quite good.
Also the cheap Troop unlock... and exactly that, he is cheap.

At 100 points, He would be worth taking for his abilities without the troop unlock, and he'd be worth taking for the troop unlock without any abilities.

You can fill out your troops slots in tanks that can effect the game, and have troops that either have melta/PW/3++ saves/pyskers and still be stting pretty around 700 points.
That leaves a lot of space in the list for heavy hitters such as Dreads/DKs/Pallies that will draw most of the heat off your troops.
I have seen a Cotty list at 1500 with 5 psyfledreads. Definitely had its weaknesses, but was quite mean.
At 1750/2k, you can ramp that up even further. Adding a Libby to your S6 parking lot means the majority of everything is pretty survivable ... until the vehicles blow up.
When you consider that a GM and 2x10 GKSS in Razors is around the same cost, it can make some serious sense.

Now this is the story, all about how my life got flipped,
turned upside down. If'd you'd like to take a minute, just sit right there, I'll tell you how I became the lord of Formosa.
On my homeworld of titan, born and raised.
An Inquisitor is how I spent most of my days.
Chilling out, maxing my troops
Whilst shooting some heretics, right outside the school
When a couple of daemons, they were up to no good, started making trouble in my neighbourhood.
I got in one little exterminatus and Draigo got scared and said
"You're moving with your henchmen to a planet called Formosa"
Musical interlude aside, 100 pts, unlocks 70 point troops that are hard to deal with because they're all in razorbacks and leaves room for psybots, paladin hit squads and all sorts of neat GK toys.

I'm sure if there were 40 GK players playing at CanCon it would be likely

Coteaz or Draigo seem to be your choices..
Yeah - it's the cheap troops unlock that gets him the love.
I'm still resisting.. Doing the "purist" thing as well..

more so than in any other, reroll hopefully down into something that doesnt bother you like immob or dont shoot.
but only if you can take cheap troops to off set the 120 points increase, plus bs 5 with twin linked you might aswell just roll 4 dice for armour pen

Without a doubt, even more so than the extra str from psybolt.
Cheap troops, and DCA as troops are the reason for the Coteaz love, the other special abilities are just gravy.
Personally I got sick of the henchman spam fairly quickly though and am back to running a purist list with my GK

Even without the henchmen he is more than worth his points. He's got a mc hammer with 3 attacks base, gun that us better than a storm bolter, 3 wounds and 2+ armour armour, he is a deep strike deturant that makes you immune to drop pod armies, gives you the ability to deploy aggressively when your going first and better seize chance. Not to mention him single handedly owning deamon armies and tyranids armies to sanctuary and the ability to beat a while squad of blood crushers by himself.
For 100 pts he is a total boss even without henchmen, if I was buying a cheep hq to buff my squad slightly it would be him even over a ordo grenades inquisitor.

Dear Paddlepop Lion
Take into acount that J.McTrollan has given himself two weeks off work and I'd say only three days in is already bored with trying to get his pet turtles to kiss.
Please take your time replying to his lame troll so he will waste hours sitting at his PC refreshing the page every thirty seconds till you do. Saves him from coming over to my house.
Gratefully yours

Well played Shelly.
Coteaz is worth his points purely for his own abilities. The key thing he provides is cheap choices in a codex filled with expensive generalist units.
I ran the 1500pt psybolt list that fester was talking about, and it was -quite- vicious.
Basically, for the bargain basement price of 92pts, you get a str6 heavy bolter razorback, with fortitude, and 3 BS3 meltaguns inside, that score. You can also get 15pt DCA's, which are far and away the best bang for buck combat unit in the game, or psykers, or mystics, or any other number of weird and wonderful things that are usually restricted to a choice provided by a HQ.
Coteaz also allows guard players to run the GK codex at a fraction of an entry cost - smart business thinking on GW's part, although probably entirely accidental.
In short, he is the cornerstone of one of GK's 2 top builds - either acolyte spam, or paladin spam with draigo.

I took him because of is ability to effectively allow you to deploy without fear of being seized.
He makes Deepstrike armies much less effective.
He is also an additional Hammerhand for whatever squad he is with.
He is a bargain for his points.
YOu've seen my list Mike so you know how I'll be running him.

I've seen a lot of GK lists for CanCon. If memory serves there are about 20 or so. I'll have to double check, but I think at least 50% of them are fielding Coteaz.
I'm tempted to enforce a Time Cop rule where if two of the same special character end up in base to base they just mutually annhialate each other.

Thats a pretty cool rule.

And coteaz is alright. Outside of deathcults and arcos the others are just a poor mans guard army. If i wanted a cheapish combat unit that does the damage i would put him in.
