Full Version: DOOM - The Boardgame miniatures

Our games group has recently got into boardgames in a big way, thanks somewhat to MilSims big sale. One I picked up was DOOM - the boardgame, just a sucker for miniatures. The game is for four players, red, green, blue and minis are cast in soft plastic of the appropriate colour. There is a limit to the number of monsters per player so monsters are cast in colour too, one player gets only one colour monsters. I was going to try painting the monsters differently to represent this colour specificity, like the red players zombies are wearing red jackets, but now I think I'll just look on the base to see what colour they were.
Quick paintjobs, lots of drybrushing, lots of monsters to paint.

Yes, its a very cool game, if it wasn't the fact thats its the shop's copy of DOOM I would probably painted them up too, now all you need is to paint up one of the Dogs and Cyber-Demons
Jester of Death
cool. what are the prices like?
I have been looking at getting copy of this game. It cost 90 bucks Veneficus and the box is that heavy you could use it as a weapon. What I have seen it comes with loads of bulk head floor plans much like Space Hulk, so it would also be great for that.

Whats the game like to play SteveFirth?

The game looks fantastic, the production values are way above other stuff I've bought recently. Unfortunately I have yet to play anything but a solo game, DOOM is for four players and we usually have more when we get together.
The game has great mechanics, one player as the monsters is trying to kill off the marines, draws cards that have events or monsters to spawn onto the game board. Marines generally have to get from one door to another and have a certain amount of 'lives' to do this with. Marines pick up guns, health, keys, ammo, etc along the way.
There are diff coloured dice for diff weapons, each side showing variables of range, damage and ammunition used, this is a great mechanic. Shotgun uses red dice, which have less range and more damage, assault rifle uses blue dice which have greater range less damage, BFG uses every dice.
The scaling per player is what lets the game down slightly but I think the fix is easy. The maps and extras, like ammo, are set no matter how many players but the monsters come in three colours, one for each marine. With only one marine you can only have one batch of monsters to summon from, with two, two batches, etc. The monster controller gets to take a number of cards equal to the number of players. So Marine/Monster ratios are good and challenging, the one thing missing is scaling the 'extras' on the map, like ammo. The greatest downside I hear from reviews is that marines always run out of ammo. That said there are a buttload of tokens with the game, just add more to the map in ratio with the number of players?
Hoping to get a game played this week, I'll tell you how it goes.

For the production values and the amount of stuff in this box $90 is a good deal.
For the Fantasy version of this have a look at Descent: Journeys into the dark. Same manufacturer, very similar rules and mechanics, but they have taken some of the feedback from DOOM and scaled it better.
PDF rules are available from http://www.fantasyflightgames.com so have a read and make your own mind up about the games.

Wonder how these models would look when 'dipped'? Anyone got some spare to try?
