The game looks fantastic, the production values are way above other stuff I've bought recently. Unfortunately I have yet to play anything but a solo game, DOOM is for four players and we usually have more when we get together.
The game has great mechanics, one player as the monsters is trying to kill off the marines, draws cards that have events or monsters to spawn onto the game board. Marines generally have to get from one door to another and have a certain amount of 'lives' to do this with. Marines pick up guns, health, keys, ammo, etc along the way.
There are diff coloured dice for diff weapons, each side showing variables of range, damage and ammunition used, this is a great mechanic. Shotgun uses red dice, which have less range and more damage, assault rifle uses blue dice which have greater range less damage, BFG uses every dice.
The scaling per player is what lets the game down slightly but I think the fix is easy. The maps and extras, like ammo, are set no matter how many players but the monsters come in three colours, one for each marine. With only one marine you can only have one batch of monsters to summon from, with two, two batches, etc. The monster controller gets to take a number of cards equal to the number of players. So Marine/Monster ratios are good and challenging, the one thing missing is scaling the 'extras' on the map, like ammo. The greatest downside I hear from reviews is that marines always run out of ammo. That said there are a buttload of tokens with the game, just add more to the map in ratio with the number of players?
Hoping to get a game played this week, I'll tell you how it goes.
For the production values and the amount of stuff in this box $90 is a good deal.
For the Fantasy version of this have a look at Descent: Journeys into the dark. Same manufacturer, very similar rules and mechanics, but they have taken some of the feedback from DOOM and scaled it better.
PDF rules are available from
