Full Version: World War Two game?

I was thinking of returning to making kits of world war two tanks , around the 35 to 48 scale and wondered if there are any good rules to use the models in a game with or without infantry and divisional support.

I know about flames of war but I want to use large model kits rather than the 15 mm versions.

I have seen blokes playing FOW with 1/72 scale but not as big as 35 or 48.
Comrade
Iron Ivan makes rules called disposable heroes which work at that scale.

Force on Force for 20mm (1/72 scale) or Bolt Action's rule system for 28mm, Stu.
Though finding people that play them will be virtually impossible.
Flames is still very strong in Caboolture mate, if you want to relook at that. V3 is great and has reinvigorated a lot of armies that weren't viable in V2.
I'm actually painting up an Afrika Korps army at the moment.

A few rules sets are floating around including a new one to be released later this year by Osprey Publishing but written by Rick Priestly and Allessio of GW fame. I am very keen to get this one but here are a few others below.

There is Kampfgruppe Normandy (Spelling) -released by Warhammer Historical

Rules of Engagement - Great Escape Games

Disposable Heroes and a Coffin for Seven Brothers - Iron Ivan Games

I am trying the bottom 2. I just picked up some of Warlord Games 28 mm Germans and British to assembled and game with. I plan to add a few vehicles as well.

I hope this helps!

Cheers,

Allan

p.s. I am really keen to get the rules by Warlord Games/Osprey Publishing wink.gif

I have a soft spot for Rules of Engagement.

They way that system handles morale and orders is quite simple and fairly realistic.

Rather than your troops simply being effective or routed, as they come under more and more fire and suffer more casualties the morale can degrade. You never have to worry that one bad batch of command checks will route a flank (unless you come under an insane torrent of fire).

At the start of each turn you have to issue order to each unit, indicating targets for fire and melee. The orders issued dictate the speed of movement, the ability to make effective use of terrain, the ability to fire (and in some cases use over watch) and assault. As you declare targets at the start of each turn you may end up with some squads that may not get to make attacks as their intended victims get killed off before they make an attack.

Disposable Heroes is a little to abstracted for my liking.

As far as making kits goes...I recently picked up a bunch of models at a garage sale. Mostly cars (and then, mostly Italian cars from the 60's and 70's) but I also scored a few way OOP kits from Gunze Sangyo. From their High-Tech Models range, the kits are 'multi-media' kits that have traditional plastic parts along with PE and white metal (the car kits even have vinyl parts for things like the seats, door trims and floors). Cannot wait to get started on them!

I play FOW with 1/72 and it works quite well , we dont change any ranges or base sizes , it all works .
Theres also Disposeable Heroes , that gives a good game.

Of late we've also given Kampfgruppe a go a few times and it gave a very entertaining game , weve played it in 1/72 and 28mm and i dare say of you have the figures and vehicles in 54mm then it would work for them also.

Hi Tom,

How does KGN work?

What is the smallest unit size - are soldiers moved in platoons/squads/sections?

Keen to hear more smile.gif

several rule sets come to mind,

Force on Force
Crossfire
Iron Ivan

Not many game in 1/35th but I have painted over 100 figures for a customer in Sydney and made some terrain for it also he uses crossfire.

some 1/48th kits match 28mm figures which are easily available, I am painting a heap of 28mm figures for a participation game at the moment for MOAB this year.

1/72nd/20mm is played a lot more in Australia, especially at our club

Oh no i was hoping you would not ask , i have to be honest and say i cant remember the exact mechanics very well at all , i only played a few games under the guidance of a more knowlegable player

i do remember it allowed us to build cool unique forces and use the most obscure models i hade in my collection and i didnt have to have whole platoons of same vehicles . So having a motorcycle sidecar combo actually made a difference to scouting , a radio truck actually did something useful other than look good as a command vehicle , a heavy tank really needed some support and the infantry work better single bases but FOW bases work just as well if you can track the casualties .
i wish i could be more helpful but all i remember was i actually did enjoy the game because of the in depth detail and was not annoyed by it . Playing it with our 1/72 singles and vehicles on a huge table made a difference aesthetically too whereas FOW can look too cluttered this was all spread out and looked great.

the book was a tad expensive though so maybe find someone who can give you a demo game

Hi Tom,

That actually sounds pretty good!

Thanks for the heads up.

I have the Rules of Engagement rules on order but I will need to have a look into these now.

I have started collecting 28 mm wink.gif

I'm pretty sure we gave it a go in 28mm a few times as well although our vehicle selection was more limited than our 1/72 collection , but it still worked out well.

I'll be catching up with our little groups " Kampfgruppe person "over this weekend , i'll have a chat to him to jog my memory and post back here. Although i'm sure someone more knowledgeable will give a more precise rundown of the rule s, i'll only be going from memory ,,,,,,a failing one at that

cheers tom
