Full Version: Flames of War Mid War GB 8th Army Tank Company- problem

I have playeda few games v Germans with a Mid War 1500 points list (see below) 8th Army Heavy Armoured Company (Tank Company) and have some issues.
It has been possible to draw (neither side reached objectives) but I have suffered the heavier losses each time (but then I probably have fewer Teams on the table and am against Infantry, gun and A/T Teams).

The list is 9 Heavy and 3 Light tanks, which seems like plenty of muscle.

I have varied the list below to try A/T or Artillery to give me long range firepower against A/T, Arty and Infantry instead of Air Support. i am thinking of swapping the light tanks for Portee A/T or Deacons or Priests.

Just recently I added Pip Roberts which gave me 1 extra Grant.

HQ MajGen Pip Roberts Grant 135
HQ 2 Sherman 225
2 Grant + 1 Sherman 300
2 Grant +1 Sherman 300
2 Grant+ 1 Sherman 300
3 Honey Stuart Light Tanks (not Recce) 140
Hurricane IID = Cannon Limited 100
1500

I play 40K, but tactically I am not a strong player. Does anyone who plays with GB tanks (or against them) think this list is an OK lineup that should be viable v Germans or Italians given the right tactics, practice and time, or is it "unbalanced" and therefore harder to play?

I went flat out last game to get in close but got badly shot up by A/T and Panzer IVs. I think maybe I need to use smoke, which I havent tried yet.
Also need to use the Machine guns agasinst soft targets. Thanks.

I'm new at FoW too but I always ask my opponent after a game what he thinks I/he should have done differently. That gives a few good hints while the game is fresh in your mind which helps you to analyse each game and learn from each one.

I play Soviet Tank and I'm always wary of German tanks. They seem to have the edge over Soviet tanks. This means I play cautiously, using cover as much as possible.

My 2 cents, Mick.

Dark One,

while I haven't been active in FoW for quite a while I have seen that list, or very similar played, and have played against it using Germans (or Finns) with CV armour and it has seemed to always struggle even in the hands of fairly experienced players. One of the best/ most successful variants of it I remember seeing used included artillery which was able to assist with both smoking targets to allow the armour to maneuver and to assist with suppressing or killing anti tank guns or infantry.

Part of the trouble is your tanks are actually rated as medium tanks, not heavies!

Firstly, what book are you getting your list from?

What I meant was, even though they are classed as "heavy" tanks, they arent when compared to german and soviet heavy tanks.

Secondly, you have no infantry to either support the tanks OR hold any objectives. Is this how you are losing games?

actually dedhed in midwar north africa which this list would be from, they are considered heavy tanks as the team summaries have them under heavy tank. this is just for North Africa though during midwar. I believe your list focuses to much on the tanks and you need something that can reliably assault to succeed as an attacker, Infantry do this job great. as they are "Heavy" tanks they are very expensive maybe consider haveing just two platoons of tanks, one with all shermans and one with all grants, this may help, with the extra points you would be able to get two infantry platoons with no upgradesIm not to sure about the aircraft as I have had no experience with them myself, but artillery may be useful to have teams to hold an objective and so you can advance easily with your tanks. apart from that I dont know how else to help you. I dont actually have the book with me currently so some of this advice may not be valid. hope this helps

British medium tanks 8th Army hence trained are basically a hard army to use, especially against german armour. Whilst stationary at long range you get to use your special rules, its still a 6 to hit and they save on a 4/5+ (assuming they don't storm troop away) whilst in return it is 5+ to hit and 5+ to save, so it isn't in your favour.

When I use the brit armour, I ussually go light supported by heavy, but, if you wish to go heavy, 1 plt grant, 1 plt sherman (mixed is bad as the CO must be in the sherman, and that makes him a target), then 2 light plt to rush forward and threaten flanks (honeys are faster but crusaders can work), and some smoke and recon if you can squeeze them in. Smoke to limit some return fire (especially AT weapons) and recon to lift GTG if needed.

Thanks for your helpful comments. Actually in my first game under the new rules (and I havent received the book yet myself!) at 1500 with that list against Italians I got the 1 of my 2 objectives by turn 4 and WON!
I will consider avoiding mixed platoons, and using smoke (its a pity the Honeys are Light not Recon in this Scenario). Maybe I will either add A/T Portees or Probably Artillery as 4+ Priests (I was told I cant field only 3 models) as soon as I get the HQ stuff. Maybe the Light Squadron is a more effective list. A Pz Gren Army with Panzer IVs gave me grief before.

Yeah, thanks, good idea. Usually its volunteered anyway by experienced players!!!
