Round four is now open and quite appropriate for the imminent release of the new 40k. The die has been cast,

Modern+ Vehicle/warmachine.

Registration photos are due by 15th July. This round will end one week earlier than usual, finishing at midday on Thursday 23rd August due to other commitments that may take up some of my time at the end of the August.

As per usual, any work in progress pics are welcome.

Awesome. I need to finish a vehicle or two for The Fists.

I have a LRC done to the basecoat stage which I'd like to complete. Can I use this? While this is an advantage (less work to do as already assembled, undercoated and basecoated), nothing creative has been done.

If allowed, I am happy to remove myself from any prize contention, as am starting 3-4 hours into the project.

Regards,
Andrew.

I would be looking to do a Storm Raven. And while I have also now planning to radically change the paint scheme. while it was originally going to be a matching pair for my other stormraven I am now planning on making it to match my relic condemptor dreads in style and paint the front to look something like a grey knight helmet. SO work doe so far would only count as a base coat.
korocite
That sounds fine for both of you. I have no issue with you both being in the running for the prize.

I feel the need to do something involving a bit of conversion. Maybe one of the imperial guard tanks, not sure which yet. I have been having a lot of fun with command tanks in Open General, especially the Panther which is an awesome unit when it has some experience under the hood, so this may form some of the inspiration.

@ Plebicidal, excellent, I look forward to seeing a land raider that lights up.

@ sync, I think this will be our first ever entry from the Mantic range! Is there any games system that you do not play???

Well... I don't really 'play' game systems per-se sad.gif
But I have made a promise to myself to learn how to play 40K with the release of 6th edition!

But otherwise I just buy models that I think look cool!
Plebicidal
Cool!

In that case, this is where im up to:

My Iron Legion modelling diary.

Literally havent touched it since then.. armata_PDT_04.gif
For the Horde
i will go for this challenge and attempt a stormtalon, maybe 2..........

Steve - looking interesting. Given the level of customisation, is this going to be a particular type of tank, or just something which looks cool?

Cya,
Andrew.

korocite
Fluff factor 7 - the plan is for it to be a command tank as inspired by the command tanks in Open General. The lack of sponsons and armour plating on the side is to reduce weight and give it greater speed so it can zip around the battlefield lending its experience to as many units as possible in a given turn. I have borrowed ideas from Panzer types 1 through 4. The current plan is for it to have a wider than normal leman russ turret and armed with either twin or quad heavy stubbers. A hull mounted multimelta will be useful for any armoured surprises that appear.

or...

This will be completely useless on the gaming table. It is designed to look cool.

Steve

PS I went down to the hobby store today to look for the plastic pipe/tubing pack I mentioned. They did not have it - the owner had just completed stocktake and did not recall ever seeing it.

No worries - thanks very much for looking anyway.

Now that I'm learning 40k, and I'm painting up my Chaos Space Marines, I thought I'd change my entry to something I plan on using on the table.

Chaos Dreadnought!

Oh, I should mention that I acquired this model second-hand - it's not half painted already!

It's currently got the Iron Warriors paint scheme, but I plan on repainting it my own Chaos Space Marine Chapter!

I up armoured the turret to keep the field marshal a bit safer. Rivets will be added soon.

P.S. After a hellish week finishing off a project - declaring for this challenge. Will paint up this guy.

i changed my entry to 2 night scythes/doom scythes from the necron codex!! heres hoping i can get them painted by then. there are also 2 bases to go with them but i am waiting on them to arrive.

might do that as an objective

This is how it looks before I test out the new airbrush on it. It has been primed with army painter grey, washed with watered down vallejo black wash, dry brushed with codex grey, then drybrushed with lighter grey. Tomorrow is the day I attempt to use an airbrush for the first time.

Looking good so far - good luck with the airbrush! smile.gif
Cya,
Andrew.
korocite
I think it fair to say that my attempts at airbrushing resulted in dismal failure.

IPB Image

IPB Image

It would appear that I have a lot to learn...
My idea was based on the image I saw of a tiger tank in a book that my uncle and aunt gave me when i was a kid. The tiger had been hastily sprayed in a white winter colour scheme over the original grey/green with patches of the original colour scheme showing through. I might have to re-think this one.

Other completely unrelated work in progress, just for giggles,

dvaston
Steve - dont be harsh on yourself.

It looks like you are using the airbrush to do faint camo lines on the tank?

I thought it was usually best to just use the airbrush just for doing consistent undercoats and basecoats.

It is of course possible to do finer airbrushing, but that takes a lot of practice I would imagine.

I think you attempted some fairly fancy airbrushing, which is brave for a first go. Anyway I wish you luck on your 2nd attempt, which Im sure will be up to your usual high standards.

And that reminds me I need to actually get my airbrush out of its box and start using it myself... tongue.gif

If you want straight or angular lines / cammo use masking tape
If you want irregular lines / cammo use bluetac

I tend to use my airbrush for base colours & mid tones.
Its perfect for edging panels on tanks etc.

Sync
Awesome work as always Steve smile.gif

Love the unique colour scheme on the Menoth too - I still owe you that WM Demo!
korocite
Thanks for the replies.

@ Dave, I was probably being a bit ambitious for my first go. At the very least I learned how to clean it!

@ Plebicidal, I reckon i will use the airbrush to base coat it and then try a camouflage scheme with masking rather than free hand. Small steps I suppose.

@ Sync, the purple and white feels somewhat appropriate for self important religious zealots.

I think my main issue was not thinning the paint enough which resulted in inconsistent trigger action. I will try again.

Paint consistency is the most important step in learning to airbrush.
I use water (or sometimes windex) in a dropper bottle so I can control how much I thin the paint.

Check out VJ air range.
I tend to use 3:1 vj air to water through my airbrush at ~30 - 40psi.
korocite
The second attempt at airbrushing was only marginally better than the first. I think I thinned the paint too much, or had the psi incorrect, or the moon was in the wrong phase.

IPB Image

A few coats with the masking tape in place did the job reasonably.

The finished tank.

I had lots of fun playing with mig pigments and chalks for the weathering. Imperial armour masterclass was a useful resource for this challenge.

I've done a bunch of blocking out, but that's about it on my land raider, though I've made an imperial aquila stencil for the top. (Will use airbrush to create the shape, then plan some freehand - maybe - to add details and highlights.)

My modelling time is getting hammered again - bid work required. sad.gif Am getting sick of it.

Cya,
Andrew.

I am basically down to detailing, but I do need to pick up some stuff for the detailing
For the Horde
It's undercoated and ready to be painted. Just need to work on an eye popping scheme.

Im finishing off my squad & 40k monster entries for GD then turning my attention back to the vehicle entry.

P.S. Does a Dreadnought count as a vehicle/warmachine? I guess if a Warmachine Warjack counts it probably does...

Cya,

@sync, I like the base colour and the tidy painting, but (at the risk of alienating the only other entrant) the metal work and the marine pack look unfinished. I think the pack needs some more variation in colour and the metal would look more realistic if it were toned down with a wash or two - it is looking a bit too shiny for a chaos dreadnought. Nice work on the base.
