So the classic use of Wolf Guard is to add the Fist and Combi-weapon to a unit of Grey Hunters... Well with the potential decrease in mech-meta (and running a foot list personally) I was wondering whether people though it was necessary to have the squad leaders or if they would be better used as an executor squad.

My thought is to run 6 or more Wolf Guard with Combi-Plasma in a drop pod and use them as an alpha strike to nab First Blood or to kill the opponent's Warlord. Tooled thus they are only 23pts each, and I can throw in a Fist or some Melta Bombs to deal with other threats too. Thoughts?

challenges make having a character type model with a fist a potential liability depending on what assualts them. putting a bunch of them in a drop pod, hoping for first turn to potentially gain a VP for the first blood bonus seems like more of a liability.

My 5th ed list was 4 units of Wolf Guard.

2 units were:

5 WG
1 Terminator w/Chainfist & Cycone
2x Combiplasmas

The other 2 were:

5 WG
Terminator w/Chainfist & Heavy Flamer (one of them had a Wolf Claw instead of the Chainfist).
2x Combimeltas
1x Combiflamer

As stated fist sergeants are a liability for the points cost. Wolf guard fists are really cheap though, so might still be worth it. They are still a good combi weapon platform and they are pretty cheap to stick a terminator at the front of the unit for the first 3-10 saves if you're walking around with grey hunters.

Units of wolf guard got really awesome though, both in the combi-spam setup that was already awesome and the "bunch of dudes with some fists" setup.

8 wolf guard - each with 2 plasma pistols. let by wolf priest to give them preferred enemy - in a drop pod

Well having A S8 attack work well in cc agianst lots of things, also it's ap. Grey hunters don't get access to power fists, just power sowrds/axes.

Also a wolf guard give you LD9.

As for combi meltas in a pod, sure it sounds good but they really have to have a role after that (i just went to high lords were my 4 leftover guard only had combi-meltas in a pod, umm yeah they did not perform well at all) When they can still pose threat afterwards that's when they are usefull.

Grey Hunters do have access to Power Fists. They're just terrible so not even the fluffiest of fluff bunnies takes them.

Actually, I might take one to Stouthammer. Maybe.
