Was browsing the GWUK site and came across a page full of artwork from the Chaos Codex, one of which was the cool artwork of Kharn on page 48. It then hit me - how cool would that picture be with some colour? Now, a few hours down the track and I have an almost-finished product; all I need is a decent background.

First, the original picture by one of GW's arty blokes (sorry, Codex and webpage does not say who exactly, so it has to be one of the following: Alex Boyd, Paul Dainton, David Gallagher and Karl Kopinski).

And now, the coloured version.

First off, it was far more than just a paint bucket job, I had to re-highlight pretty much everything. Not hard, just time-consuming.

Secondly, I want to add some blood to Gorechild (the Chainaxe) but not entirely sure how to get a decent look. Ideas?

And lastly, any ideas for a background? I've tried a few things but nothing seems to grab me.

Thanks all. As always, any and all constructive feedback welcome.

looks awesome, no real complaints, except maybe make his skin tone lighter so that it is a bit more distinguishable

Wow, that is amazing, i would add some lightning to the background. Add in some battered war torn ground. You know, have you considerd doing this for any imperial pictures, like the Black Templar on page 21 of the space marine codex? Although that might be harder.

Holy crap, that looks great! :-D

Piles of corpses of his slain foes and/or allies :-) I do like the idea of a stormy background like davidbowie suggests. Looks pretty damn good too atm.

nice very nice, photoshop is a great program really like using it seeing im a grapho... and as much as i dont like 40k i have always liked the kharn figure its fantastic, true essence of khorne
for the background id suggest tattered bodys and the throne of skulls.

Lord_Ulrik

good to see you gave credit to the original artist too (not to say you wouldn't)..otherwise might have GW breathing down your neck.

Wow, quite an overwhelming response. Thank you all for the comments, a pile of dead bodies (Slaaneshi, more than likely) sounds the go as far as the background is concerned. I'm also aiming to fix some little things with it such as the right underarm and the left foot, and maybe add some special effects or somesuch (for plasma, blood and perhaps lightning).

We'll see how it goes.

Cheexsta, i find the most successful way of doing blood, is quite simple, use a spatter brush with low flow and opacity, then dup the layer, set top layer to multiply blend option, bung them both in a layer folder and use colour dodge i think it is, might be burn, on the layer set blending. In any case, play around with the blending modes, it comes off really nicely, and as described, is dead easy.
