Just wanted to say Congrats to all the winners and players who made it through all 3 days (or 2, or one depending on how many you got through)

The weather was terrific and the atmosphere was great as experienced tournament goers mixed with tournament newcomers.

As the first major tournament outside of Cheesecon tournaments I was a little apprehensive about getting the results done in time and making sure the bye player had a game.

Thankfully it all went to plan and had relatively few hiccups.

In hindsight I would have made the following changes
- Sports and Comp would be scored out of 5, while experienced gamers could differentiate between good and great, less experienced gamers couldnt; giving a small range would help this immensly
- The Swapsies mission was generally well received, but while I had the setup done right (like armies Vs like armies in a unseeded round with an option not to play with the opposing players army) I should have also done like paint jobs vs like paint jobs; so that only skilled modelers are handling there opponents finely detailed models.
- Dont use funky stuff like Reverse Escalation with missions like recon because a infantry army will find it next to impossible to achieve.
- Dont use funky rules in a swapsies mission, just keep it simple like Seek and Destroy.
- If you have bonus points for vehicles, lump MC's into the same Category.
- Always have a minimum of a 18" pushback. Always.
- Keep to time limits; at the 10-20 minute Mark tell people to finish the entire player turn finishing with the person who went second.
- Keep the missions simple; that being said, complex stuff like Gamma Loot with Alpha Quarters as a secondary mission is quite ok and intresting as it forces you to play the standard missions slightly differently.
- Feel free to come up with a special rule for the event; MOAB Night Fight was very well recieved (in missions that had this rule, you rolled a dice at the start of the turn, 1,2,3 - Dawn finishes at the end of the turn indicated on the dice. 4,5,6 Dusk Starts at the beginning of the turn.) That being said I should have used a modified rule for all missions; 1,2 - Dawn finishes at the end of the turn indicated on the dice. 3,4 - Nothing Happens. 5,6 Dusk Starts at the beginning of the turn

Special Mention has to be made to both Stephen and Colin for having the guts to take a 2000pt Army against Hillys 1500pt nid Army in there bye games... Those Brave souls never had a chance against twinlinked devourers; even with Deceiver thrown into the mix...

Anyways, once again thanks to all those Attended and hope to see everyone back next year with more people!

I could have sworn I was 5th overall when I briefly looked at the scores before leaving, but I guess I'll take 4th instead tongue.gif
Was a realatively good weekend of gaming all told. The last game vs Julian was incredibly b leh though, but not his fault, we were both completely out of it at that point.
But overall, all my opponents where fatastic. Highlight games of the weekend were my gurdge vs alex...I don't think I could have played a better / more perfect game. Everything just went the way they were supposed to.
My game against Jason was easily the most tooth and nails game of the weekend. It came down to objectives to decide the winner and I managed to scrape out ahead with one more objective. Definitely the most tense and exciting game of the weekend. Also one that I had thought I was more likely to lose as well.
My second last game vs Mark (aka Vanilla Dice) was only slightly less tense and exciting than my game vs Jason. The only thing that marred it was a little kerfuffle at the end that ruined the overall mood of the game a little. But water under the bridge. smile.gif
The only other notable mention was my game vs Tim Sleigh. After killing 57 out of 84 Genestealers on the first turn, he managed to make a slight come back and wipe out half my army with just one unit of stealers over several turns while I killed off the rest of his army bar that brood in turn 2.

I think it's time for a new word in our vernacular - the Scott Gray manouvre. We all know Grimmond started it many a year a go, but Scott has honed it to artform. Well done Scott, king of the soft scores! Can't say I'm all that surprised. As soon as Phil got up I began to suspect a Dark Horse would beat all us high battle point scorers and sure enough! armata_PDT_37.gif

Kudos to Julian and Anthoney, commiserations to Krefey, I understand the desire to quest for a podium in a prestigious tourny like MOAB.

As for myself... hmm, excellent battle, great comp and sports... Is this finally going to get me past my fear of the paint brush? My quest for a tournament win demands it, it seems. Project Eldar begins now...

Delighted with Best General.

Had some awesome games over the weekend and very little to complain over. One thing it did seem to be a lot of non standard missions. Still unsure if that's really such a bad thing. Perhaps a couple had too many special rules.

It's funny, on Saturday I didn't feel like I'd be much of a threat this time, especially with my grudge backfireing so completely (Curses, foiled by a cleanse style mission again!) AT least this time it was nothing so much I did wrong as my opponent playing a beautiful game. I had one chance to get some momentum which really depended on a 6 for a difficult charge... Mike got the result he deserved when my dice stood up to their reliable ways, giving me a 2 and a 4 to choose for my 6" assault...

Round 2 was a big win vs Scott's army - not a 2nd time inspector Gadget... As fun as always... especially if I get the win! biggrin.gif

At the end of the day I drew with Jason's Nids. That was extremely enjoyable, just a pity we were too slow to get through to completion. SO I'd managed the "50%" so far, sort of felt it unlikely that I was going to be threatening the top echelon from there.

Much shenanigans went on at Mark's that night as we all contrbuted to Trips pizza fund (he must have had a premonition as he'd already shouted the pizzas...) by losing to him at Poker... in my case I was knocked out by 1 pip! Mark had Ks with the A kicker, I had Ks with a Q kicker! Next time, Mr!

Day 2 saw me start vs Dennis' Blood Angels. They certainly play qu8ite dfferent with the new dex and Dennis played a shooty army. My practise against Space Marines led to a solid success, a nice start to Sunday.
ROund 5 I drew Mark in the triple deployment zone mission. Since I was able to use my WWPs normally, I was able to play a usual game, but Mark was definitely adversely effected by losing his Exorcists til the later game.
Round 6 sees me against David Issacs Daemon Hunters. David is visiting from NZ< just a few weeks. Props for representing and coming to the tourny, I wonder if this is a name we'll hear more of? David's never seen a WWP DE before and despite my warnings about my reach he played the moving game, closing the gap for another slaughter.

I was quite surprised and not just a little delighted to learn I was in the top 3 on battle points now... well I guess an undefeated day helps!

I had a bit of tummy problems leading to me 1/2 hr late. This meant I was a bit late to face Anthony, who was leading. The unfortuante result was Trip faced him instead (Much to Trips chagrin) and since Dennis' opponent didn't show that meant we could face again. John had to make a decision, and even tho it might have adverselty effected me, considering my position he couldn't just let me face an opponent I'd previously slaughtered instead of the leader. SO he said the result would be a draw but Secondary bonuses were available. Dennis and I had another go, not quite the same result although I would have won (Just not the top win) I did get all the bonuses except 1, so 28 isn't bad from a draw, I wasn't dissappointed except for missing the chance to play Anthony again, we often face at MOAB.

The final draw and I had just dropped behind Adam, who thus drawed Anthony while I faced Doug, another common matchup for MOAB. From memory he totally pwned me last time we faced I was quite happy to get back with a minor victory to finish off a 5 consecutive win tun and undefeated for 7 consecutive rounds! Delighted to see my SPorts and Comp weren't impacted the way they were the last time I got that result at a Cancon many moons ago. Who said you can't improve your comp/sports score, eh? smile.gif

You can bet I was extremely interested in the results, since Adam against Anthony lost I calculated I'd probably be running 2nd on battle. I admit I had faint hopes I might crack the podium, knowing full well probably just one category risked that not happening. It is with interest that I note if I put in the efforts Krefey or Julian (or Scott wink.gif ) had, the results could have been vastly different for me. IE, I have a standout area for improvement, don't I? smile.gif

Thanks to all for what is probably the best wargaming event in Sydney. As Scott said at one point, sweeping his hand over the main playing area, "now this is a gaming event" (in contrast to the GT, for eg). Quite.

equal 6th? after a generally (enjoyable but) sound beating from most of my opponents all i can say is: HOO HA! for soft scores! without them i would really suck!
Lonestar
Well, forget the "Submarine" forget the "Grimmond" say hello to the "Gray" Zone!

Perfect in painting and comp, very close to the top for sports and only 3 wins, 1 draw and 4 losses for the win! Thankyou to all my opponents for many a great game! A big thankyou to John - AEON for a/ running the tournament and b/ listening to my feedback (lots of my opinions are up top).

A win with 4 losses..... Diddiggy Diddiggy Diddiggy Do! Though it was very close up the pointy end of the tournament, its just that I was down with all those other players who were down on thier luck as well! wink.gif We all had stories to tell about "how I failed this" "how I failed that" in our last games, and I guess we were just focussed more on just playing for the hell of it!

Oh and my losses were really really "crap" one's as well, out of 40 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 10......(from memory) I also have heaps of photos of my army getting nailed, I will post them up once the heat exorstion has subsided.

I knew I had a bloody good shot at painted, and once the anouncement was made that Phil had scored it but really was 2nd, I'm thinking "What I placed?"....... 3rd came and went, as did 2nd..... hehehehehehehe ohmy.gif I had scored just over half battle points......

Diddiggy Diddiggy!

I would like to thank all of my opponents over the weekend. I learned alot from this expereince and hope it helps in the future. Thanks to John for running the tournament and letting me face 1500 points of Hilly's bugs with 2000 points of Necrons, I still felt 'unclean' afterwards armata_PDT_11.gif.

Hi All,

Thankyou John for running the comp. Sincerely appreciated your efforts.

Opponents Majority of opponents excellent. IMHO the only highlight I could leave the tourney with. However, must say dissapppointing again to see many players not turn up on Day 3. Which forced several of the guys there to cope the bye.

Mission Feedback:

Do agree with several of Johns (TO) comments reference post con comments above.

As for the missions, my perspective just didn't like them at all. Several too complex. Too many missions involving auto night fight (for 1-3 turns). Ambigous wording on some, while others required heavy use of the caluclator to work out multipliers for VP's. Furthermore, maybe its my style of play but trying to complete 2 missions per game, as well as, pick up the extra bonus VP's for achieving additional game outcomes I found very taxing on the Deathwing and in all honesty, virtually impossible.

Hated the swapies mission. Was not comfortable in using anothers persons figures, nor them using my mine. It was probaly one of the 1 of 2 missions that really suited my Deathwing. Unfortunately, my opponent Andrew Wyatt caned me with my own army. After experinecing it, i'll will never turn up to another 40K tourney if I see this in pre brief advertisemnet. In the end, I spent time, $ and effort on army (+ long distance travelling) for my opponent gets to use. I acknowledge your motivation behind the theory, using your words at the con that is too punish those with cheese ( so they they know how it feels), but why should the majority be whacked for sake of the minority? Lastly, several people I spoke with after this particular mission found that they were guding their opponents in how to use their own army against them during the game anyways.

I won the game were loot counters (falling distress beacons) dropped from space and randomly scattered over either the left or the right hand side of the table board. I really felt sorry for my opponent Andrew Grant. He had no chance in hell of contesting 3 of the 5 counters, as they virtualy scattered into my deployment zone. I honestly feel these counters should of been deployed as loot counters prior to deployment, so both sides had equal opportunity to capture.

Conclusion for missiosn I'd prefer missions straight out of the book. Maybe one of two with a twist. But not all the games. In reflection, the tourney and its missions suited lots of troops and as many scoring units as you could fit into an army. Finally, an army designed purely for close combat such as nids would have been perfect. Maybe John could throw up the players pack here for others who did not attend the tourney so they have understanding of how missions worked.

Terrain. I thought I would never ever say this, but there was too much terrain on several boards I played on.

Results In the end walked away with 3 wins , 1 draw, 4 floggings. Soft scores (bar comp for reasons unknown) is what kept my in the picture.

Just my thoughts
Tnk (aka Phil)

Hi Phil

Beautiful army! You deserved it!

And I loved our game, even though all the luck went to me, you smiled on just waiting for one of 2 things to happen, either the pain would stop (afterall it was just basic weapons dragging down your terminators) or you would be able to inflict some pain! And just one round of bad luck it what drags our armies down.

Some tables had too much terrain, while the majority were just right. But that forest table was just wrong for a tournament setting.

As for the secondary mission, there were very hard for small armies such as ours to accomplish both and a breeze for the larger ones. And its just good to see there were no Zilla lists in attendance, the missions and terrain were just siuted to that style of army, inverse escelation anyone.........

Just wanted to say Congrats to all the winners and players who made it through all 3 days (or 2, or one depending on how many you got through)

John (or anyone else who can help)

Is there a list of those who only attended one or 2 days? I'll need to adjust for that in the 40K Tournament Rankings.

Thanks

Mark C
Krefey
I'm pretty sure both Ben and Andrew Grant missed one day as well as Sam Rousenvelle

The results for MOAB have been added to the 40K Tournament Rankings.

Cheers to the TO for running a very enjoyable tourni! The mission objectives were all cool and a little different, but I do agree that the reverse escelation wasn't necessary on the swapsies. Also you may want to consider removing the special deployment rules from the mission with the two waves of reinforcements in future and maybe think about counting all units except HS and HQ's for determining the rearmost unit (stands to reason that these units don't need to move up if they don't want to).

As a side note i'm confused as to why i scored 15 out of 128 for painting, that's about 1/3 the painting score i got at cancon (I took the unfinished sisters of battle), maybe their was a mistake, because my army was painted this time...

PS

Sorry to krefey for my manners during our match, shouldn't bring my moods to gaming table, I was sure I left them at home... must off been wrong.

LOL, it's all good Adam, no offense was taken. Your luck was just plain terrible! I can sympathise completely.

Regarding the Swappsies mission - I didn't actually notice but when you say like vs like, did that mean, for eg, that Witch Hunters faced Witch Hunters, Eldar vs Eldar, Marine vs Marine? I didn't think about it much when you mentioned I was the only one to face such a different army from my own - this was marvellous and greatly increased my enjoyment.

If that's the case I am extremely grateful there were no other DE players as playing a DE list in swappsies would have probably bored me to tears...

Id rather face a very different army in swappsies so I can play something unfamiliar. At least an army from a different codex. Probably why I liked the game so much as it was the first time I've ever got to play nids (and like any newbie nid player managed to stuff up on the Synapse!)

SO I was thinking if I did swappsies I'd be looking to match up different armies, instead of like vs like. Anyway, that's my thought.

One of my Justisticars was chipped ohmy.gif armata_PDT_07.gif AND I was fighting bugs!

Poor Doug, I teased him merslessly about the damage, oh and lets not forget the backpack that fell off as well ohmy.gif But all was repaired that night, no lasting damage done.

Having not played in a 40K tournament since the late 90s, I had as much fun as I expected to.

My Stealers are all still hiding in their box, and should be finished healing by this Thursday (Facing 2K Eldar at the club).

On the subject of tables, as I mentioned, I have not been to a tournie to play for many many years...
I found the tables were mostly bowling greens with the odd bit of cover to run past as I moved from fire zone to fire zone. In FOW, we call those sorts of tables "Tank Friendly" and I was not expecting them to be so prevalent. Having successfully bribed the GM to allow me to set up my medium density forest table... I discovered that the trees are not as fun to play in for stealers as I thought they would be. If I ever play in a 40K tournament again, I suspect the 4 land raiders will be dusted off if the tables are going to be so open.

Overall, my total disregard for the missions and tactical options for setup worked as well as expected (Read "Badly"), but the stealers had fun most of the time.

Thanks to John for running everything, and I hope lots of you turn up to Cancon 2008 and have as much fun.

All,

Just like to take the time to thank all the competitors for helping with the packup on the Monday by putting all the tables and tops away. The MOAB organisers (and their backs) do greatly appreciate this.

Thanks,

A question as I check for any mis-spelt names from the 40K Tournament Rankings

Did David Issacs who attended MOAB also attend Tagcon in Timaru (NZ South Island)? If so, what is the correct spelling of his name?

Thanks

Mark C
Krefey
there was a kiwi there from memory, so it's entirely possible they're the same person.
ArchonCryx
Definitely likely to be the same guy. I played David, who is a Kiwi, but didnt study his surname carefully enough to be sure of the right spelling. However I feel very very confidant they are one and the same guy, David was only over for a few weeks visiting relies and came to MOAB almost on a whim..
