Hello all.
Lately some of us grots have gotten into Privateer Press' Warmachine. The rules system is pretty robust, the miniatures are pretty swanky and the setting is pretty cool.
Some of us will be playing some WM games at GROTS this coming meet, and if there are any of you that have WM armies somewhere in the woodwork, bring 'em out and we'll set up a game.
Sam will be playing Cryx, Daniel has the Menoth starter box and I've got almost 500pts of Cygnar that I'm itching to have a try with.

im looking forward to this, it will be good to get my head out of 40k before GIF, and get to put some ideas in action (FINALLY!)
i should have my satyxsis, bloat and skarlock thralls arrive tomorow or friday, and should be picking up the mechanithrall set, sea witch and skaare from mind games tomorow. that should give me *almost* the standard 500 (although i think 300-350 will be the order of the day)

What sort of an investment is required for a playable force in WM? I'm semi-interested in playing a new game system. Also is there anyone at GROTS that plays infinity? I've just read the rules and it seems like a really good game with some really cool mechanics.

From mindgames, I bought the softcover rules for $35 and the menoth box (caster, 2 light and 1 heavy 'jack) for $68 giving me an approximately 350pt army. But for a tournament sized army, I've heard about $200 will do it comfortably, maybe a little more. (Depends on tournament too). Others should be able to tell you more.
I've only got my crusader to assemble now (though no gaps are filled)

My crusader is now assembled. No gaps filled, nor will there be any paint. But with only 4 models, it shouldn't be too bad.

I'm very interested in seeing a demo game of this... I won';t be there till approx. 17:00 however. Will you boys still be playing with each other then? And I mean that in a wargaming manner (moi? serious for once??!!)
AstroBoy
Mar 15 2008, 07:50 PM
Maybe, I will probably be there till then, but I can't guarantee that I won't be playing a game of 40k or something. But it's most likely I'll be free.

BREAKING NEWS:
sam pwns anton
AstroBoy
Mar 16 2008, 07:31 PM
Yeah, Anton didn't have too good a day. He lost 2 out of 3 games. But to be honest, in such small games, with the death of the caster, the winner usually pwns.
But yeah, sam pwns anton
Guard_Treadhead
Mar 16 2008, 07:40 PM
Anton is Russian and thus he is not confortable in combat unless he's throwing hordes of cheap men at things.

On the left you'll be able to pick the faction and then the list of units will be down the bottom.

Speedy with the epic fail.
What factions are being played at GROTS? I want some warmachine action but I think I'll try and play a faction not represented? I'm thinking cryx or khador or possibly both. I saw on some other thread that sam was playing cryx, and also that he pwns anton... Is there any khador players? I think it might have to be both factions.
Assaultguardsman
Mar 17 2008, 10:21 PM
Noone's playing Khador yet. If you pick them, we'd have all four factions represented, sans Mercs.

Pick one you'll stick with, not just one no one else plays. If it happens to match, good.
Chaplain_Fortis
Mar 18 2008, 09:45 AM
Let me know once you decide speedy (i.e. once you actually take the plunge and order the models). I know its better to pick one you will stick with but i like the models and the tactics of both cryx and khador, and i think it would get a touch boring if the club ended up with 3 cryx players and no khador. Either way i guess it doesn't matter too much, i haven't been able to visit the club again since a while ago. Hopefully i'll get back soon.

CURSE YOU ANTON........
brought the rule book off e-bay this morning, and watching a few jacks on ebay now. thats it no more bringing new games to GROTS, my wife is goingto kill me buying a new set of minitures. lucky i sold one of my titans this morning to cover the cost( so far).

what jimmy purchases is pretty irrelevant...he never actually turns up!
and yes, those rumours are highly accurate. i defeated anton (yet again) for the title of "lord of the internet" using my cryx of awesomeness...the remainder of which STILL have not arrived (curse you aus post)
i think we will be fully into the swing by next club. after GIF has been played...im pretty happy to give 40k a rest for a lil while!
Chaplain_Fortis
Mar 18 2008, 04:48 PM
Well on that basis then i might do some khador. But also quite irrelevant what i purchase as i don't turn up either. What sort of cryx faction are you going to run sam? Lots of bane knights and bile thralls? Or masses of bonejacks for the massive arc node death? Or some other build?
theshufflingzombie
Mar 18 2008, 04:53 PM
atm im playing a balls to the walls aggresive/assasination force...which was more decided by what models i like then anything. however im sure ill fall quite easily into other styles as soon as i have this one nailed down. im definatly considering going for a pirate army after this first 500! will definatly be getting some black ogrins anyway
i recomend either choosing a selection of models you like...or choosing a play style. download a program called "armies of immoren", its a free ware army builder for warmachine, it should help you figure out roughly what your going to be able to get in the points.

Any hints on how to make it work? I downloaded the .jar file, updated my java, but i can't figure out what i'm supposed to do to make it go? I double click, nothing. I tell it to run in a browser, nothing. I tell it to run in some java thingo, nothing. What program is supposed to run this file?
theshufflingzombie
Mar 18 2008, 05:36 PM
it should run itself....you should have a java enviroment open though
Assaultguardsman
Mar 18 2008, 08:56 PM
did you download a .jar or a .zip? Some browsers autoconvert the .jar to .zip. If this happens, there's another link you can use.
Chaplain_Fortis
Mar 18 2008, 09:54 PM
When i double click it, windows just tells me it doesn't know what program to run a .jar file in... and i don't know either. What is the java environment file called and how do i open that... sigh. I'm normally so good at this kind of stuff. I've downloaded the .jar file it didn't change it to a zip. Can someone please post an idiots step by step guide? I think i may be that idiot.

you should have java installed on your computer, and running. then try opening the .jar file

I'z is thunking of going Khador... I'z have a few units lined up and a style of force in mind.
I am thinking of getting the rule book this thursday, can anyone tell me which one I am supposed to get (as there are several out there)?.
Chaplain_Fortis
Mar 19 2008, 10:03 AM
Epic win, i got it to work with some command line shenanigans and a jar of vaseline.
I believe the rulebook you want is prime:remix, it has all the expansions' rules in it plus the original prime rules so is the most current and up to date compilation.
And I just put a dibs down on some Khador, about 750 points worth

Now i just have to remember to go to GROTS someday...
Assaultguardsman
Mar 19 2008, 12:12 PM
Prime: Remix is the book you want Ash. It has all the rules for the game, as well as stats for some units. If you want to know everything available to your faction, buy the faction deck .

Chaplain_Fortis
Mar 19 2008, 01:49 PM
A lot of the interest is from me and speedy sam, neither of which are what you would call "regular" attendees. Also have a look at WSWA, they have a massive ammount of warmachine going on over on the westside.

well sam you can add me to that list, i got the rulebook today( even though i only brought it on EBAY yesterday) and i have a couple of jacks on the way down from sydney. plus with Asher you could add Luke as he was waiting to look at the rule book then he was looking to get into it as well.
Am over 40k, plus why would you want to buy anything for it when the new rules come out later in the year, for Warmachine am thinking a mercenary contract force. something no one is doing at the club yet. i think....

WSWA has at least 6 I can think of as regular WM/Hordes players, not including the visitors/members from outlying suburbs in the East, of which I can think of another 6.
So GROTS has some catching to do...and is this just a Fad? Will it flow away, after the initial excitement has gone?
GROTS has always been pretty much a GW club AFAIK? Please correct me if I am wrong

Good Luck with the recruiting however! Is all good for the WM/Hordes community in Vic...the more the merrier!

Wow, the GROTS community would get schooled by the (comparatively) veteran WSWA guys if we were to run a tournament. Anyway good to see all the interest. And rob, definitely go for the mercenaries if you want to, i think it'd be great to get reasonably even spread across all factions (from my minimal reading it seems the majority of people play cryx\khador, not at the club but people in general).
I might have to make the special effort to get to GROTS next club (the 30th right?) and play a few games... that is if i can close this deal by then.
As for it being a fad, it may be that people are a bit burnt out with 40k at the moment and the lack of tournaments to plan for probably doesn't help. Oh well, here's to it being a long term venture.

we havent had very strong ties to gw for the last 2 years...but we WHERE heavily involved with them back in the day (the culture has changed pretty signifigantly since then)

Hi Tony.
It's not looking like it will be a fad, as I need a serious breather from 40k, Sam's of the same mind, and many of our players are looking for something new. The comparitively low start-in cost is enticing many people too.
