Over on Warhammer Empire I came across the topic Is steam tank totally unfair?.

I think that we've been playing it wrong. The way I thought it worked was choose a number of steam points you want to use, roll a dice, and if the total wasn't more than your wounds then the original number plus the D6 was the number of steam points you have available to use to move/charge etc.

The way that it does work is you choose a number of steam points you want to use. This will be the number of steam points available to you if the overload doesn't occur.

The rolling of the D6 is just to see if an overload occurs. Roll the dice and add the number to the number of steam points. If the total is more than your wounds then you can't move or shoot this turn and you take one wound. The D6 doesn't give you steam points that you can use.

That steam tank is not so scarey after all.

The Empire player can pick any number up to "5" for the number of steam points. However, if he is greedy and steam points + D6 > remaining wounds it can do nothing (plus takes a further wound). The trick is getting a few wounds on it.

The steam tank is T6 and 1+ save. Only artillery really has much chance of doing any wounds on it from shooting.

At 24" range handgunners need 3's to hit (large target), 6's to wound and it then gets a 3+ save. You'd need about 27 shots on average to do one wound, or three turns of shooting from your typical unit. With crossbows you'd need 4's, 6's and it has a 2+ save so you'd need 72 shots to do one wound.

A bolt thrower with Engineer would hit on 2's (up to 24"), wound on 4's and no save. Each wounding hit causes D3 wounds. You'd expect that 3 shots from a bolt thrower would cause 2 - 3 wounds on average.

In my Dwarf list I typically have two bolt throwers. A Cannon would also do the trick, if you can estimate ranges.

With Tomb Kings I would suggest the Screaming Skull Catapult. Use the incantation to give the catapult a shot in the magic phase to zero in on the target and in the shooting phase you should know the range exactly.

What is the maximum impact hits it can do? So if I hold it up with a unit of swarms, can I flank charge it and cause a panic, or is it immune to psychology?

Never mind, just read up on it. So you need to do 10 wounds vs toughness 6. It is unbreakable and you don't want to be in front of it, in or out of melee. So would require a unit of Ushabti or Bone Giant to take it down from the side. Maybe I need to start including that Ogre unit of Iron Guts as Dogs of War with my Tomb Kings.

War Machines are immune to Panic as are the crew of a war machine.
I think the one and only time I took on the Steam tank I had two cannons, I couldnt kill it, but it was disabled.

Only for Dwarves. Empire canon crew are not immune. However I just found out that the Stank is unbreakable (like your slayers).
