Hello all
EDIT: Mouse is jumping in to share my diary. We are both doing an ogre army for torneys next year. We are both aiming to do fairly similar lists with display bases. Its on like donkey kong.
End Edit. Enjoy.
OGRES!
A little back story for those who are interested:
It was the night after The Pilgrimage, and we were sitting around at my place having a brew and licking our wounds from the days proceedings. There were 4 of us throwing around ideas for our next army projects. Me, being very indecisive went from deamons to skellies to elves and finally to Ogres. i went through every race i didnt already have i think. So it was ogres.
Now we needed a theme. Who doesnt love pirates! the justification is the Pirate maneater, who is to be my head huncho, and heroic leader.
TRANSPORATABLE
The plan is that the whole army will be mounted on a fold out display base small enough to be carry on luggage. so this army is hopefully going to make its debute (and probably final battle too) at Convic 09.
That gives me about 8 months give or take.
BASIC PLAN.
The basic plan is to do a display base with a built in ogre pirate ship, and the ogres pulling into an empire port to launch an assult on the unsuspecting civilians.
So there will be a big boat on the display base and the following units at this stage.
General - Pirate man eater
2 butchers (i wanna be a little bit competitive.)
these will be modeled on the ships doctors. Hack saws etc.
1 BSB He will be carrying a pirate flag (ogre style) which he will have ripped from the mast (crows nest and all) of ther pirate ship, or one around it.
2 x 6 bulls
these guys will be the lowly pirates, simple clothing, shirts etc, and a few missing limbs and the like, and hats. Always hats.
1 x 4 Lead belchers (maybe 2 units)
these guys are the gun crews of the ship, dirty and again simple outfits
1 x 6 ironguts
These guys i am goinna go to town on, full trench coats pirate style, all with big hats and a few hook hands and feathered caps.
1 giant (because i want to. Not sure how he fits on the boat but oh well.)
this guy is going to have the front half of a fishing boat by the mast raised over his head, and in the other hand he will be swinging the anchor as a weapon. his foot will be crushing the rear part of the boat.
i am planniing on having fishing men hanging out of the boat the giant is holding in the air.
2 x 25 Gobnars
These guys are going to be on a raft, all dressed up as pirates, and i am going to try to go to town on the bickering in the unit.
Thats the basic plan.
All gut plates will be removed, along with resculpted shoes and clothes to increase the piratyness.
Cheers.,
Comments welcome as always, i will try to post some pics of the test model soon.

Sounds ambitous, I plan to field my ogres at convict next year too.
I'm not converting anything and all my minitures are assembled, but you still might beat me anyay.

This plan sounds VERY cool! Can't wait to see it in action. BeastKid (the actual player of WHFB in the family, I just make and paint his models) has been amassing an army of OK which I'm going to get started on soon...we're thinking Ninjas, or Kung Fu..but can't imagine thinking about the sort of conversions and display you've got here!!! Your pirates will be the bomb!! You've got some very sweet ideas there. Prepare for the onslaught of silly pirate jokes. I'll start... Pirate's favorite letter of the alphabet? ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR...

After your last great army of Skaven (considering doing one of those soon to) i look forward to your attempt on this one.
Ah the pros and cons of a 'portable army' I'm surprised you didn't give the general a couple of Maneater mates with pistols as the Bursers and mates on the ship.
Hopefully once i'm back from my trip i can pull my finger out and do an AD with a similar theme. look forward to seeing it in action.
Are you going to be using your Skaven Wood bases or are you going to splurge and get resin ones?

Oct 14 2008, 06:03 PM
Cheers for the kind words lads. I have not even done anything yet!
@ Todbringer: i forgot to add 2 maneaters to the list. i am thinking about doing them, but also thinking i can run 2 units of leadbelchers, or ironguts in their place. will come down to what looks cooler.
I am going to make the bases out of modeling putty. The idea is that they are going to be walking along the pier, or in the rock pool area so i am gonna sculpt pools/rocks etc to suit the bases.

hi all,
Todbringer: happy to help with ideas mate. Best thing i have found is to just think up a theme, especially a movie or video game you love then find an army you can match to that feel and go from there.
i have started with masive plans, but i may not get it all done!
Here is my first test figure to remove the gut plate.
I am the first to say its very average. I learnt a few lessons.
1. i rushed it, i am tired and i wanted to take easy way. This caused the glue holding the model together to give way.
2. i didnt secure the model to a cork, so i kept stuffing up my work,
3. i need a new, clean and sharp tool. The ceramics tool i nicked when i left school many years ago is no good!
4. Need to plan out my scuplts, mass them out then do the detail. rushing it all was not good.
5. i need to remove more of the belt to make the gut the right size and more natural.
Anyway, Only way is up from here.

gonna do some more tomorrow i hope.

Awesomeness!!
So it begins!
What I love is that it doesn't matter how long you give yourself to do it - you'll be rushing the night before regardless!!
So - just to make life harder - you doin stripes??
Hangin out to see the progress dude!
I'll try and give you a run for your money this year..

if you wanted to punch for a high degree of difficulty - sculpt a buccaneer shirt (puffy shirt from Seinfeld) from greenstuff for your captain.

thanks lads,
Jimbo, all the champs and iron guts are getting puffy shirts and/or trenchcoats. I am not the best sculpter though so its gonna take a while.

also if you like pirates check out the band Alestorm (their pirate metal

Oct 15 2008, 10:54 AM
hey mate.
i started by cuting the whole ogre in half at the belt and reposing him. this bit is optional.
then all you need to do is cut the area the gut plate is supposed to fix to away all the way around. careful not to damage the boobies. then spend a fair bit of time (i didnt spend enough) cutting the plastic either side of the gut plate out. then fill the whooping big hole with GS.
The more of the belt you can remove round the sides i think the more natural it will look.
I did the GS in one go, but next time i am gonna do the gut first then do the pants and the belt after the gut has dried to give me something to work up to.

5. i need to remove more of the belt to make the gut the right size and more natural.
I'm gonna disagree here and suggest you go the other way - continue the belt across the gut, just below the middle. This will give you I believe a more realistic finish than having pants hanging underneath the gut.
I think if you look at real people, and consider that the Ogre gut isn't just fat but specifically-developed muscle as well, people like powerlifters, wrestlers and footballers who have large but solidly muscled guts draw their belts across them, where really only slobby fatties hang their excess lard over the front like a verandah.
A Butcher should have his slobby fatgut hanging over his belt, but I reckon the rest would belt across.
Just my opinion, of course!

you will get more pics when i get out of work.
i am at work in body but not mind, mind is on pirates!
i am goint to try the leadbelchers over the weekend, and the plan at the moment is to have 4 of them
I am going to do one of my leadbelchers looking into the barrel of his cannon like there is something wrong with it, and i am going to have his goblar helper seaking around and lighting the fuse....
another one is going to have shot his poor goblar out of his cannon in a hail of shrapnel and flames (that one is gonna be harder). and i am thinking another one trying to force his goblar into the barrel, and the last one drinking out of a barrel of beer.
thats the plan...

hey all.
Thanks heaps to everyone for your words of encouragement! it really is enough to get me off my lazy butt and doing something. I have spent all night getting one leadbelcher right. this is gonna take a while!
Senexis - the more i look around the more i agree with you, i think a slight dip will be good, so they dont look to dorkey, but just a slight drop will help it. I will take the curve right round to the sides of the ogres to try to make it look natural. thanks mate! sounds easy!
heres an incomplete lead belcher. not much of an update really!

one incomplete model in 2 and a half hours.....

Looks like his beard needs the plastic mold edge cleaning up a bit. Otherwise intriguing ideas thus far. Also like your greenstuff work to remove gutplate. Do you think you'll get sick of doing that greenstuff work or get faster at doing it?
horse
Oct 17 2008, 09:08 PM
yeah, he needs a clean up all over, there is some resculpting of the beard to do, so i thought i would tidy up all at once before GS time.
i really wanna learn to sculpt a bit, so i am hoping i get good enough at it that its not too much of an issue.
there are only going to be about 25 ogres in the army so its not too bad.
thanks for the comments.

might contradict the fact that you are scatch building a ogre army, but i actually own a converted zombie pirate ogre army complete with wooden ship display base. It is up for sale if you are interested.
like i said you might not be interested but cant blame me for trying.
have a look in the buy, swap, sell. will be the one with my name as last post check it out mate.

I thought there might be more concern for the missing arm at this stage rather than the mould lines.

Just gotta do my chores first.

hey all.
Bit of an update. 3 incomplete ogres now! i have done the belcher squashing the goblar into the cannon barrel and i am a fan of how it has come out. things need poking and aligning, (not to mention green stuffing) but i think the pose works ok.
the middle guy is going to have a flame torch and i am going to try my hand at light source painting.
Hope you like em. i really need a new camera. sorry.
Goblar loading

thats one unit basically half assembled. i am going to do another unit of 3, in the process of firing, so i am going to try to do flames spouting out the barrels of all 3 cannons.
Comments and crit always welcome.

Nothing wrong with those photos. Unlike some of mine, at least they are in focus and you can tell what is going on. I also like the positioning work on the unit of leadbelchers and how you are attempting to relay a story with each of the units. Good work thus far!

I think the general consensus is the Gnoblar getting loaded into the cannon takes the cake. Thanks for the comments guys. Will post the last 2 leadbelchers tongiht, energy permitting, they are fairly standard, a flame carrying dude and a gnoblar getting shot out of a cannon.

Not yet, gonna do all the basic assembly, then do a clean up of all the mould lines i am to lazy to get now, and get all the models ready for GS. Then do them all together.
After that there will be another stage of asembly where i will add any little details and stuff of the sprue.

Yeah, he's a winner, but the unit as a whole works very well. The dude looking into the cannon is better with his mates than he was on his own.

Don't knock the "standard"s. Without the drummer and bass player, the guitarist can't shine. Without linemen and blockers, the running back can't score. Framing is important, and if everone is "wow" then it's a mess.

I am starting my Bulls tonight, and i need some ideas for the muso's. i am not a huge fan of the bellower idea, so some of the suggestions for alternative musos are:
1. Bagpipes
2. horn
3. Drums (made from beer barels.
4. acordian
5. Suggestions Welcome!
If you were a pirate ogre musician what would you play?
Cast your vote!
damnitsham
Oct 21 2008, 02:08 PM
Piano accordion gets my vote. Either that or a fiddle. But then I don't see an ogre being capable of wielding a fiddle, so maybe include it for the sake of irony?
Senexis
Oct 21 2008, 02:09 PM
Definitely drums. The fluff mentions bellowers because Ogres aren't musical, and with the old gag about drummers being people who hang around musos...
Plus it's hitting things, which fits the Ogre way nicely.
horse
Oct 21 2008, 02:11 PM
hehehe. funny cause its true..
your right it says they are not musical, but there is also some horns on some of the sprues. i think drums are the most close to the fluff.
