I haven't seen anyone post this before but this is a great multiplayer board game. I highly recommend you go have a look at it or question any friends that might own it. I kinda like to describe it as multiplayer chess, there's no chance in this game it's all strategy.

Keep an eye out for Puerto Rico next convention you go to selling board games, this is a wargaming forum so I can only assume that there are people that have played it before and similarly recommend it.

I picked it and the expansion up for 49.99 and its now one of our groups staple games smile.gif

It's a great game (you might also be interested in the card game that is based on it: San Juan).

The only issue I would want people to be aware of is that players need to be of similar skill level. When three decent players play a weak one, or two vs two, the lack of random factors mean being the next to act after a weak player can be like having two turns.

That's the reason why I don't play much of it anymore after around 30 plays. Most of that has to do with playing board games with non-gamers more than half of the time, but if I'm playing with hardcore gamers, its one of the best games out there.

It is a great game. There is a random factor however - that being, which crops are available. It can have a pretty big impact on the game (eg, how much corn is available early.)

I've got this one on the shelf to play but haven't had any takers as yet. I've also got Railroad Tycoon waiting for a play and Tigris & Euprates. But I'm having trouble getting my wife and in-laws (regular gamers) to move beyond Carcasonne or card games, like 500.

Railroad Tycoon is a pale imitation of Age of Steam. The board is mega super huge (much bigger than required) and play is not as nuanced, with some big random factors (like don't bother with the western side of the board if you don't get the superior engineering card I think it's called). Unfortunatley Age of Steam is rare as hen's teeth right now. (I think a new version was published recently but I can't seem to get the local game store to order it in).

I've heard good things about Tigris and Euphretes but haven't given is a go.
