I picked up the Ortega gunslingers box yesterday. I don't actually intend to run 'pure Sonia' or 'pure Perdita', I don't think -- I reckon I'll mix and match depending on my mood! I could certainly have done with some long-ranged fire-power last time I played sprue...

I managed to snaffle one of the rulebooks after the recent Defiant Gaming restock along with Sonnia Criid and Rasputina starters. Unfortunately the Ice Gamin were missing from my Rasputina starter so there is not a lot I can do with them at the moment. I always seem to be unlucky with bits missing

My first two crews arrived yesterday. Perdita and Lady Justice. Zoraida should be on it's way currently.

My first Crew (Outsiders - Som'er'Teef Jones) should arrive next week. Will have to look into a 2nd with either Ortegas or the Redchappel Gang (why? BECAUSE ).

On an unrelated subject... anyone have tips for swamp bases? I love the Victorian Goth feel to the models but the little Deliverance-esque Gremlins deserve a little more love

Turns out I cheated, I can't move and splode while Slow so I wouldn't have done in Sybelle at all.

It is really important to take out Seamus' crew before him.

I'd love to see a showdown between the Arachnid Swarms and the Belles without me having to fiddle about with a treasure token.

Barely got to use their healing flips and disgusting amount of attacks.

I take it you didn't have the cards to Lure the Borg closer with the Belles?

The only reason Borg was in there was the Red Joker on the Stoke, otherwise you'd have had it in your deployment zone before my crew got in sight. I'm surprised he managed to hand off the Swarm, Armour 1 counts.



It was 4 spiders and they did in 3 Ladies of Negotiable Affection, Sybelle (by cheating!) and a Necropunk
One of the Swarms got killed outright before it could Self Repair.
And holy googilly moogilly if I ever get ten spiders on the board you'll know it.

Seriously though, how hard to come to grips with is the deck of cards mechanic? From what I have read it is really intuitive and smooth.

Malifaux seems to have picked up pretty well on friday nights at Southern Battle Gamers in Sylvania(shameless plug) my local gaming group

That sounds great PJP13, I used to play down there before I moved (WFB anyway).

I've got/ordered Lilith and Somer Teeth Jones (will probably pick up some archanists as well)

Bring a couple of shovels, because you will dig it.

Your hand is basically a selection of "rolls" if you don't like the numbers / suits.
Suit-based triggers are great and have important repercussions for list design.
There are also twists which make you draw two and take the worst or best.

Always full of surprises, those Jokers show up a lot as you'll chew through most of your deck on turn 2/3 when it heats up.

After two games I was very comfortable with it.
The translation of attack success to damage is a little cumbersome at first...but it contains a lot of tactical depth which makes it worthwhile.

I'm amazed no other system I've seen has tried something like this. It beats dice hands down.

Plenty of RPGs, board games, and CCGs (obviously) have used card-based systems for determining randomness.

Having just finished reading Malifaux, the system is basically the Castle Falkenstein RPG with more complications.

He is cool though... On the up side, everyone is a new player so you are not really at a disadvantage at all.

All the discussions on the Wyrd site seem to indicate that once you have a handle on him, Levi can be incredibly nasty.

Yeah I've been reading the Malifaux forums... I was already wanting him based on the model (before I even understood how the game works) but now I know more, his style appeals to me... he's kind of like one of those annoying token decks in Magic back in the day.

I was tempted by him more because of rusty alice. who I think is a cool model.

I'm afraid I'm ordering Mf stuff mostly by going on theme, which is kind of hard as I like the theme of nearly everything.

eg. I've decided I need to get Pandora purely because I love the thought of Kade and Teddy.

But first its the undead hookers, the mad hater and the hillbilly gremlins.

I dont actually like the malifaux figures in general, ill probably scratch build/convert most of my stuff.

Leveticus really needs to choreograph his actions before the battle.

I remember being told Ramos was hard to use and picked up tactics very quickly...but Leveticus really will be a chalenge, make sure you do your homework or the first few games will be a shmozzle.

Also, Ramos goes brilliantly with Rusty Alice.
He may be a good start out for Leveticus training, if only to know Alice's abilities inside out by the time you start on Leveticus.

Its not so much the rules of the game but the large number of rules on the cards and figuring out their true potential is that brings in the learning curve.

Picked up Levi and Alyce today, now I just need to paint and do some scratch building.
