I am looking to get back into fantasy after a break of about two editions or so.
I have a Dark Elf army but am unsure of how to play them now (I used to play Herohammer with Witchelf Hags).
I have a list of everything I have got and would appreciate feedback on what units are effective to take, what unit sizes and configurations work best, as well as lords and heroes and magic items.
If anyone has suggestions of what style of game to play with this army I would appreciate that too as I will only buy additional dark riders to keep in the theme of the old edition (my chariots are converted from bolt throwers and shades are the old assassin model).

Highborn, Black Dragon, Lance, Heavy Armour, Shield, Sea Dragon Cloak 469

I have no idea how t go about using Dark Elves but you have a wide variety of troops and at about 3800 points worth you should be able to put together several flexible armies.
Try a few themes and see how they come off. Go for the well balanced army , try that, go for the dragon lord general army, try a really cheesy one see how they all go.
You might find some of the more successful players would suggest armies that are well balanced or have something that can contribute to each phase of the game. I personally think that is good advice.
Welcome back to WHFB

For a theme I was thinking of using all of the cold ones and getting some more dark riders for a fast army.
Its not fair, I want to use all of my special units... maybe a really big witch elf unit just for fun....

i would suggest using at least 2 level 2 Sorcerers in the army their magic can be deadly but hard to get off depending on opponants army. 2 or 3 25 man units of warriors with spears shields and full command, a unit of corsairs and a unit of witch elves. A Highborne on a Cold One works nice with a big unit normally around 9 to 10 in total. 2 or 3 units of 12 crossbowmen work nicely for scouting ahead of the army..... Cold One Chariots are a bit expensive but if you really like them go ahead and use them to your hearts content.....reaper bolt throwers are great, havnt got the range of a high elf reaper but still good if used properly
cheers

Thanx for the tips GW,
I am looking to take a highborn on a cold one, scorceress on a cold one and about 8 knights, two chariots cos i have just converted them up, 1 unit of spears and 1 unit of corsairs, all the crossbowmen and bolt throwers and whatever else I can fit in.
The witch elves are having their hair and nails done (repainting them) so wont be attending the first couple of battles.
Still havent written a list yet but when i do i might put it up for review.
ummmm might wanna make it a legal list chris, what with dark elves being a 10+ model unit. otherwise, i like the dragon (thats kewl), they are always fun. what you might wanna do is also get some sorcesses' on foot because otherwise they can be a tad too easy to deal with (ie. it isnt a bright idea to add a squishy lvl 2 wizzie into a shock unit or put her in a position where your opponent can draw LoS to her due to the fact that she is mounted).
