Ok, so Im about to take the plunge on something that I have been working on for the last 5 months or so. I have plans for a Miniature line and a skirmish game in the making play testing will begin soon.

Its still in the fledgling stage and there are still quite a few things to learn and work on. But Im having a ball doing it.

Here is a couple of shots of my second completed sculpt. Right now he has had his arm removed ready for moulding.
These pics were taken at almost completion. As always there is something to learn and Improve on.

This figure will hopefully be cast in Metal soon. Not sure at the moment if it will take any part in the game but was really just for fun and learning. The top of the head is around 35mm I wanted him slightly taller in the 32mm scale as he is kinda demonic, hence the caved snub nose and horns. He is sculpted in FIMO, Green stuff and Milliput.

Wow mate looks fantastic! Proportions seem right and the details on the muscles look awesome. The only thing I can really point out is that i think the Pectoral and abdominal muscles could come down a little further.

You got the cloth pretty much spot on. Good job. How tall is he?
Just noticed the feet... are they hooves or armoured?

Thanks Tony, Im pretty happy with him Im learning heaps as I go. There are areas to improve on. I hope you get to check him out in the flesh soon and maybe play some games.
Cheers Greenmonkeydishwater, I did give him a bit of an 8 pack

that has probably given him that look. Thanks for the crits they always help me to improve.
Hey Intergalactic, the feet are armoured, I had a slightly different plan setting out. But doing it of the cuff I changed plan a bit as I worked on him. He stands 35mm to the top of the head. I had him next to the Dawnguard Officer figure from PP and they are roughly the same hight.

He looks great , your efforts have really paid off .
As for the abs and pec musculature , while in comparison to a human anatomy he does look different , but he's demonic and i actually think these slightly unhuman features acentuate his other-worldly appearance .
good work , cheers Tom

Has the stuff actually set yet? It might just be the picture but the larger top lip and the upturned nose look a little odd just at closer inspection. Just a constructive suggestion, but what would the face look like if it was a little more like this:

Sorry Greenmonkey, the fella has been backed up I have something in mind that will be a kin to the face of he who shall not be named.

And Warrgh, thanks for the offer. No doubt we will be in touch in the not too distant future. I always admire your sketch work in your diary.
Hahaha, thanks Mark. Once I get play testing I'll provide some info but that will probably be at least couple months away. Id like some people at club to get involved in the play testing and development too.

And thanks Mango.
Better go to work...

Thanks for the offer JoD that would be great.

Old mate is bathing in silicon atm, going to try and knock out a prototype. Doing a 2 part mould a little differently that Im use too. Fingers crossed it works.

Bit of an update. Here is a quick pick of my latest sculpt. He is getting close to complete. Still a few things to tweak and work on. Picture is a bit large so you can see the work a bit better.

1st rules development and play test session happened today. It went well, my brother brought some good ideas and helped things along tremendously.

What brand/type of sculpting medium are you using? I have never seen anything like it; it looks like your figures are made of marble!

Dec 20 2009, 07:25 PM
Thanks Dan and Cypher, Im working hard at it and having a lot of fun.
Hey Mortus. The medium Im using is Fimo, it's like sculpey but i find it nicer to use. It is used by quite a few miniature sculptors. I guess you could say the Rackham sculptors put it on the map. It looks like that at the unbaked stage it turns matt after baking.

theres something I really like about arm stumps with bits of rusty metal jammed in as weapons.. what will he really be armed with though? scimitars?
im looking forward to seeing what you do, youve got a real smooth style
you seem to be getting quite confident with the male form, you should experiment with a really ambitious pose for the next one!
Knight_of_Sanguinius
Dec 26 2009, 05:31 AM
thanks, he has an empty dagger scabbard at his hip, so there will be a dagger in the left hand and an axe in the right. Im happy with the progress Im making, the next one will probably still be a static pose but I plan to try some different things.

I would like to try a female, but males are more forgiving as a starting point. Think I should keep on with the males for at least the next one maybe two.

wish i could sculpt from scratch like that.

Looking good! He could even get away with no hair...
The muscle definition on the abdomen doesn't seem to match with the pectorals and ribcage - he has a bodybuilder's stomach, but is otherwise very lean. Maybe he does a lot of Yoga

Are they feathers or leaves on his belt? It's a bit hard to tell while the fimo is still all shiny.
Also, what sort of tools are you using to sculpt the muscles and skin?
Knight_of_Sanguinius
Jan 3 2010, 03:18 PM
Thanks JOD, I always find the head seems a little small especially without any hair, I still have a bit of bulking out at the back of the head and around the bottom of the jaw line to do that should help him out. I think the angle of the first pic does not do wonders for the appearance of the legs I find the side views show there proportion a bit better. Saying that I just bulked up the inside of the lower right thigh and a bit around the knee as well as the calf.
Thanks Ben, Yoga is the way of the Wind Shaman.

Those are meant to be the serratus muscles on the rib cage there is generally more of them and they show on a well toned physique, might play around with them and make them look a little less cagey.

Yep Feathers still a tiny bit of work to do on them have added some thing rings attaching them to the belt and I have added some hanging medallions around the belt as well.
For the majority of the work Im using 2 tools that I bought from you a while back. The Kemper stylus and the one with a curved spatula like end and blade at the other end. Then I have maybe 3-4 other tools that I use when needed.
Thanks for the comments and feedback.

Cool, always good to know what people are using

I've gone back to sculpting almost everything with a pin tool and a scalpel blade, but will probably start using the round-tipped tools on the next project. I'm about to try sculpting my third and fourth figures, using Super Sculpey as I found three blocks of it when we moved house.
Knight_of_Sanguinius
Jan 3 2010, 03:35 PM
Great, what are you sculpting?
I have a ton of clay shapers and lots of other tools but I would say 80% of the work is done with those two. There are also a few that I made using sewing needles which I use for the fine stuff.

Two medieval-style figures, to go on top of a wedding cake for some friends. They sent me some pictures of 25mm figures that they liked, but want something closer to 70-80mm so they can be seen from a distance

Hey JoD by the end of the week I should have the current sculpt finished if not it will be very close and I have the previous one as well. The demon is also done though Im not sure if he will go into production likewise my first sculpt which isn't posted up here.
Casting from Fimo isn't the easiest exercise if I was in France I would have lost's of options. Nic from Eureka is great and did a test on a piece for me which resulted in the legs cracking from the pressure. This in turn shows in the metal casts with the pressure and the heat that he works up the fimo sculpt would be destroyed with out a good result in the mould and casts.
There are lower temp materials that this can be done in but still the fimo sculpt is destroyed. But I have heard it makes a great cast mould I believe this may be how Rackham did their's either that or through a high temp resin master.
Nic currently has a resin cast that he is going to try out for me but I don't think that it will cope well with the temperature.
Iam looking at other options including doing it my self but I would rather spend the time sculpting.

could you make a silocone mold, cast in resin then get the metal molds done?
i have little knowledge of casting.

I've done a bit of research on it

Possibly
Im currently waiting to see if the resin copy I've given Nic at Eureka survives or makes a good enough mould. Though I am highly considering doing them in resin any way.

There is a cold pressure rubber molding technique we use for delicate jewellery pieces in the industry if heat is the issue.
I've seen it work on flora and fauna and I used it on very fragile beetle legs with fantastic success.
Shrinkage is minimal too.
Expensive though.

Nearly finished another one- great to see. I am still interested if you get them cast as well.

Let me know if you are sucessful as I really want to paint these. I think I like your latest more than your demon. The staff works well for the pose of the miniature. Just out of interest what are you going to do with the other hand?
