Full Version: Repainting D&D minis - advice?

I'm looking at repainting some (plastic, prepainted) D&D minis.
Do I need to prime these puppies or can I throw GW paint, ink and washes straight over the top?

Thanks

I would at least use some brush-on primer on them if you only want to repaint part of the mini. The surface is quite slick otherwise and I had difficulty getting my paint to "grip" without any primer.

If you're going to repaint them completely then I would spray primer them. Be careful not to put too much primer on though. The details don't tend to be very sharp on the D&D prepainted minis so unless you only put a light amount of primer on you may find the details get filled in.

That's odd, because I had heard the exact opposite of that. From what I had read they only stripped with acetone, sometimes the acetone didn't strip it that effectively and on top of that there was a very fine line between stripping the paint off the mini and damaging the plastic underneath.

I haven't actually tried to strip one of the minis myself so I don't know for certain what would happen. This is just what I have read online about other people's experiences. My advice would be to test it out on a cheap common first.
