Full Version: GW chaos black undercoat...garbage?

I recently bought a can of this stuff, now in a white can, shook the can for a solid 2 minutes, did the usual foot away spray as I always do, the paint came out very liquidy and in spittles. Has anyone else had this problem. I'm thinking of bringing the paint back to show them and get a refund.

I now have 2 ironclad dreads that need to be stripped after shonky Gw undercoat.

i find the skull white very rough and powder like

I got to use the chaos black today, compared to Squirts I usually use it was a really "focused" and strong spray, impressed me quite a bit. Haven't noticed any issues. My latest can of Squirts black got a little globby\stuttery at the end of its life, but nothing at all worth crying about.

Super cheap $3.95 flat black never had a problem ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! biggrin.gif

Yeah i had no worries with my most recent can (bought about 4 days ago) works fine...
i'd suggest taking it back and asking for a replacement =D

I also find the skull white very rough and powder like with my name in place of The Herald Of The Red Harvest's name.

I recently used a can of P3 black paint and found that it is a bit thicker and less forgiving than GW black spray.

I'v never had a can splater on me, it could be the nossle so just try replace it with one from an old GW can.

Also always give your new cans a test spray away from modles as who knows what is in the mistry cans of death. armata_PDT_07.gif

Never any issues with the chaos black, despite cost it is still the best I've found. Skull white was powdery, but got past that by lessening the distance of spray (and giving a quick blow to the model parts with too much paint when I got too close).

Likely just a dud can itself dude. Take back, swap out as others suggested.

only problem ive had with the new white cans is the black sometimes goes white/grey, even on stinking hot days.

had no powdery issues with skull white, but i do all my undercoating from about 15cm away, not 30cm. 30cm makes too much waste, 15cm is great if you know how to handle a can, which is pretty easy.

Only issue i have ever had with GW spray was the old rough coat,
NAW73
Army painter.

that is all......

the basecoat doesent have that greying problem that Geedub stuff has, is similarly priced, and leaves the finest texture on the model, makes the paints after the undercoat go on rather nicely

I've found the new cans of Chaos Black to be not as good as the older ones. Never had any problems in the past but for some reason I haven't been able to get a totally smooth coat with my new can of Chaos Black spray.

@OP: The reason it goes powdery is because the paint is drying before it hits the model. Remember GW paints have accelerants to reduce the drying time, making them more likely to powder than the Bunnings stuff like raven0470 and the other guys use.

The weather also makes a big difference to spraying/airbrushing. Humid days tend to make the paint speckle.

And it's always a good idea to sit the can in warm water for a few minutes before you spray. This increase the air pressure a little and helps prevent the speckling/gluggy bits spraying out.

Airbrush ftw armata_PDT_34.gif Less paint wasted, better control, and you can get a respectable setup (using new gear) for $200.

took the can back to GW, they accused me of "smashing the nozzle or tampering with it" which is a load of BS, then the employee looked closer and saw it was missing the yellow bit... needless to say, swapped the dud can for a proper one.

This is very disappointing, GW are normally good with returns. Tell us which shop this was so we may rightfully shame them.

I've never had any problems with Chaos Black undercoat, I think the mix is bang-on. Your problem looks to be mechanical, though.

I ALWAYS test my cans of new undercoat, why just start spraying away? By the time you realize it's a dud you've got some serious stripping to do.

They jipped me on a can of Skull White UC in 2001. So for the last nine years I bought all my cans of spray from Bunnings. So instead of saving $18, they have lost over $300 biggrin.gif

morons

so did you tell them that if they did not replace the can it would be the last one you ever buy?

Yes my FLGS has had 2 faulty ones as you described it. (one was the owners own can). These were replaced by trade no questions asked. Apparently a known issue with them

Can purchased from the Bankstown GW and returned at the Parramatta GW.

fair enough, but the faulty can had a broken nozzle. which they blamed me for...
