Howdee,

This is my diary of my efforts to assmble and paint a 1750pt Nurgle Chaos Space Marine amry for Quarter Master 2 (June 5-6, Brisbane).

Ok, the basics:
I'm assembling and painting a 1750pt CSM army for a tournament. Nothing is finalised yet, and if the deadline isn't made I have a backup army (Nurgle Daemons). Some of the models I'm planning on using are already done (Summoned daemons, most of the Prince), but the majority aren't. The army is being prepared using The Army Painter. I'll explain my painting scheme below. The list I'm looking at using is as follows, remembering that this isn't finalised. I will however need painted Plague Marines, so those are first up. Any 40k games I play in the meantime I'll try to play at 1750 with this list to test and tweek it. Alright, the list:

HQ:
Prince, MoN, Wings, Warptime
Elites:
Terminators x3, Icon of Chaos Glory (not nurgle I know, but not 40 pts for 3 dudes like Nurgle, and it lets me summon daemons), combi-melta x3
Troops:
Plague Marines x9 (incl. Champ), Personal Icon, Plasmagun x2, Champ Combi-Plasma, PW & MBs
Plague Marines x10 (incl. Champ), Personal Icon, Plasmagun x2, Champ Combi-Plasma, PF. Rhino
Plague Marines x10 (incl. Champ), Personal Icon, Meltagun x2, Champ Combi-Melta, PF. Rhino
Summoned Daemons x7
Summoned Daemons x7
Heavy Support:
Defiler: Tossing up 2 CCWs or 1 and a reaper autocannon? Probably 2 CCW (using FW Plague Hulk model)
Obliterators x2

Considerations:
Can drop the defiler for 2 more blits, a vindi, or a MM dread & rhino for the 3rd PM squad. That's too think about with more playtesting.

List is fairly tough, not looking at great comp scores, 2, possibly, but hopefully not a 1 out of 5.

Model wise:
Most of the army is standard GW minis. The exceptions are the Prince which is the Ultraforge Plague Demon (which I painted for my Daemon army) with the Ultraforge wings (when I assembled it I magnestied the back sockets for the wings to I can add them at a later date [now]), the terminators are the GW plastics with the FW conversion kit, the defiler will be the FW Nurgle Plague hulk (currently under construction - not the neatest/best cast kit FW have made). Magnets used extensively throughout the army, for attaching Nurgling Wound Counters to the bases of all multiwound models, to Prince wings, to Defiler weapons (I think) and Plague Champion arms. Bases are idustrial or checkerplate and sourced from Back 2 Base-ix for the entire army.
The paint scheme is relatively simple, with the organic, blending effect The Army Painter provides being really good for Nurgle (Wouldn't use AP for my UMs, GKs or DE - not neat enough). The models are assembled into body, arms and backpack sections (very simple for the metal Death Guard models - it's how they come) with pins preset and recieving holes pre-drilled (including to bases). The parts are then sprayed black. The torso and arms are then air-brushed GW foundation Gretchin Green. Flesh picked out with Deneb Stone, metallics using vallejo game colour gunmetal or tin, or both. Washes of Devlan mud in some places. Guns are Mechrite Red (unsure of plasma/melta yet) and biological/growing/organic parts of the models are picked out in Scorpion green. Scorpion green also used as a drybrush on slightly detailed plains to add depth. Models are then AP'ed using Strong Tone. Double Varnished and attached to painted bases. Bases are painted Vallejo tin, and drybrushed gunmetal. Black & red for extra base details where required. Backpacks I'm unsure of currently, but am probably looking at mainly metallic, with brown washes to break the green up. Pics of my 2 example models can be seen on MyBattalion @

I have the majority of the PMs assembled and ready to be undercoated. The Terminators are still on spure/in bag. The Plague hulk I've started assembly of tonight, should be a week or so to put it together nicely. 1 blit has been airbrushed, the other is ready to be. Prince is done apart from his wings which will be ordered in the next few days. Rhinos are assembled and modelled, but haven't been touched by paint. Summoned daemons are completely done thanks to the other army.

Well thats where I'm upto and I hope I can keep up the work and Uni doesn't snow me under.

Cheers

Nice solid list, and im liking the paint job, my only issue is the metal on the barding is to clean need to rust it up a bit, or at least dirt it up.

Ima gunna be watchin this one definately has some potential.

I would have to echo the above comments, they are looking a little 'clean' for nurgle.

Have they been dipped yet??

Washes and powders are your friend with nurgle.

Get some rust and dirt coloured powder and after you wash them (oil paints best again for nurgle) rub them in powder like hot butter (or just brush them all over the metal and skin)

the only powders I know of are the FW ones. Are there any others?

I know they're fairly clean (those have been dipped), but I didn't want to rust the barding too much, otherwise the model becomes very, very dark. the powders seem like a good idea. Anyone have an idea where to get some or do i need to do a FW order?

cheers

Vallejo and MIG do pigments and i think Tamiya may do some as well.

I have the Vallejo sets i would recommend them over the MIG sets as you just get more biggrin.gif.

Yep any hobby store will more than likely sell powders, I prefer tamiya at the moment, but I have the FW ones and the lifecolour ones.

If you cant find any go to an art store and pick up some pastel sticks (just make sure there not oil based) scrape them with a hobby knife and voila powders.

awesome, i'll grab some vallejo ones from IF tomorrow
