EDIT: The Clan Invasion has begun!!!

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/450703...h-clan-invasion

Coming to Kickstarter on the 17th July 2019!

In the past, the various companies that were in control of the Battletech IP had tried to get a range of plastic mini's up and running, with each attempt getting better and better, although they didn't really meet the expectations of gamers.

The most recent attempt by Catalyst Games Labs (CGL), released late last year, has been an overwhelming success. Not only are the plastic mini's updated with a more modernised aesthetic (and thankfully 3D sculpted to be in-scale with each other), they are of fantastic quality. These were released in the "Battletech Beginner Box Set" and "Battletech A Game of Armored Combat Box Set". Both a little difficult to find for purchase online right now as they were so popular they sold out a couple of times over, but are now in reprint again, so won't be too far away from being available again.

Along with the new mini's came a range of updated rule books, better formatted for ease of play.

IPB Image

...anyway, on the back of the super successful recent box sets, CGL is now running a Kickstarter to add to the range with the Clan Invasion period being the focus. So a new range of plastic Clan Mechs, as well as adding to the range of existing Inner Sphere Mechs from the above box sets.

Here's a link to the official announcement;

https://bg.battletech.com/news/battletech-c...coming-july-17/

At this stage, it seems there will be a box set that will include 5 x Clan Omnimechs (Timber Wolf/Mad Cat is the only confirmed Mech from this main set so far), as well as rules, maps and other stuff.

Stretch goals will include further Star (Clan) and Lance (Inner Sphere) packs of plastic Mechs.

Add-ons will include rules, source books, box sets (shown above) and other merchandise.

It has been mentioned on the official forum, that Elemental Battle Armour may make an appearance as well (stretch goal I guess).

One of the plastic Inner Sphere Mechs will be the Warhammer!!!

The below pics show just some of the planned plastic Mechs...

So from what I can gather so far from various sources, it seems that in terms of the Clan Mechs being made available, we are looking at;

Dire Wolf
Executioner
Warhawk
Timber Wolf
Nova Cat
Summoner
Stormcrow
Nova
Shadow Cat
Grendel
Adder, and
Mist Lynx...

Currently, we've been told that the main Clan Invasion box set will have 5 x Clan Mechs and there will be a Command Star and an Assault Star, each containing 5 x Clan Mechs, for a total of 15 x Clan Mechs.

This leaves 3 x yet-to-be-named Clan Mechs at this stage...

It would be criminal to not have the Mad Dog and the Hellbringer in that line up, so I reckon they'll definitely be 2 of those 3...and I'm hoping the last one is the Fire Moth.

I'm also hoping for some Elementals...

Still, we may see more in addition to the 15...another Star may make an appearance if the Kickstarter goes really well.

There'll be some really nice Inner Sphere Mechs too...
Monkey Nuts
In the recent Battletech Beginner Box Set, we got;

Wolverine, and
Griffin

...and in the recent Battletech A Game of Armored Combat Box Set we got;

Locust
Commando
Shadow Hawk
Wolverine (same mini you get in the Beginner Box Set)
Catapult
Thunderbolt
Awesome, and
Battlemaster

...and so far, from what I can tell with the Clan Invasion Kickstarter, for Inner Sphere Mechs, we are looking at;

Marauder
Archer
Warhammer
Phoenix Hawk
Valkyrie
Stinger

...there's got to be at least another 2 x Inner Sphere Mechs as well (to round out the 2 x Lances of 4 x Mechs per Lance)...not sure what they'll be...again though, we could see more pop up during the Kickstarter...I hope we get some Assaults like the Atlas, Highlander, Cyclops and Banshee...also hoping to see a Grasshopper Mech in there too...

Looking forward to this - if the price is good.

#Me Too

I'm so hot and sexy for this Kickstarter that, since it was announced, I've had to dunk my balls into a cup of cold water several times, to dissipate heat...I think I must have blown a few heat sinks when I first saw the announcement...that won't happen once I get hold of some of those sweet Clan Double Heat Sinks from this Clan Invasion Kickstarter...
Monkey Nuts
Artwork showing the Atlas and a Cougar have been released, both are excellent...and it was mentioned that there is "quite a list" of Mechs being done that have not yet been shown...this is going to be such a great Kickstarter.

Also, there is a very cool Clan Invasion TRO coming soon-ish...and the word on the ground is that the new Alpha Strike Commander's Edition rulebook has a street date of 10th July...
Monkey Nuts
I very recently started painting the plastic Mechs I have from the new box sets...can't wait to add to these with all the new plastic Mechs, from both the Inner Sphere and the Clans, which will be made available through this upcoming Kickstarter.

Timber Wolf (AKA Mad Cat) Mechs are 100% confirmed for the Kickstarter...not sure about Urban Mechs...maybe!!!

Anthony Scroggins, who I believe is originally from New Zealand (must be because Scroggins sounds like Baggins, and that's where all the Hobbits are), is the art director for the Battletech line, and is the dude who has been doing all the sculpts for the new plastic Mechs.

He has a Patreon account where he shows early sneak peaks of what we can expect to see in the upcoming Kickstarter...and he very recently posted images of his Mad Dog (AKA Vulture) Mech sculpt, and it looks amazing, can't wait to get my hands on that...he also showed a partial image and hinted at Elemental Battle Armour, so it will be fantastic if we get to see those made in plastic for this Kickstarter!!!

After finishing the Mechs shown previously in this thread, I've decided to do a second set, this time painted yellow with dark grey accents...here's a couple of pics of the Commando, which was the tester to see if I lik ethe colour scheme and I am now in the process of finishing the other 9...

You know, I really like the Red Rooster chips, they're the right size and cut and the salt they put on them is delicious...but these ones I'm eating right now with my dinner while posting this up, are substandard...I've spat two out so far as they weren't cooked properly!!! I've been ripped!!!

Monkey - what base size are you using? they look huge compared to the standard hex

Mango - They are 2mm thick black acrylic that has been laser cut in a hex size of 50mm from flat edge to flat edge.

They are considerably larger than the hexes that the minis come glued to. My hex bases do not fit in the standard sized hex that you find on the Battletech maps, but this does not bother me as I play either Alpha Strike, and occasionally Classic Battletech using the miniature rules (hex-less tabletop play).

However, if you wanted to get the same base look but have them fit in the standard hexes, there's nothing preventing someone from cutting them to say 30mm hexes instead!

Cool, just wondering if they were oversize bases or undersize models (battleforce?) smile.gif
Monkey Nuts
An image of the Elemental Battle Armour has now been posted on Anthony Scroggins' Patreon Account, and it looks absolutely superb, very modernised yet still recognisable as having its roots come from the classic Elemental Battle Armour...getting these in high quality plastic sculpts will be fantastic...I hope we get at least 2 poses, but 3 is preferable.
Monkey Nuts
I finished my yellow set of plastic Mechs today.

I'm so pumped for this Kickstarter, only 9 days away now...so many cool looking plastic Mechs with excellent sculpts will be in it...I saw a concept sculpt for the Crusader in the last few days, very nice!!!

A week out from the Kickstarter people...an update has been released...this is just the Clan Invasion Starter Box Set shown below, many more box sets of 4 or 5 miniatures will be added by way of stretch goals.

"At the heart of the BattleTech: Clan Invasion Kickstarter is the Clan Invasion boxed set, an expansion to the bestselling BattleTech Beginner Box and A Game of Armored Combat boxed sets. Ready for a sneak peek?

One copy of the Clan Invasion box will be included for all backers at the $50 pledge level; additional copies can be purchased for $50 each as add-on items.

Here is what’s inside:

* Five high-quality plastic miniatures – the reimagined Executioner, Timber Wolf, Nova, Grendel, and Adder OmniMechs;
* Two dice, exactly like those in A Game of Armored Combat;
* A 16-page Clan Primer, in the style of the BattleTech primer included with the recent box sets, but focused on the Clans;
* A Clan Rulebook, expanding on the A Game of Armored Combat rulebook and introducing new rules for the Clans, their OmniMechs, and the high-powered weapons they wield;
* A booklet of record sheets
* A 24-page novella featuring an all-new story told from the Clan point-of-view;
* Five pilot cards and five Alpha Strike cards, each double-sided;
* A revised reference card, updated with the rules and stats for Clan units;
* Two double-sided mapsheets featuring all-new battlefields;
* One sheet of die-cut, punch out cardboard playing pieces representing each of the five OmniMechs in the box, along with terrain from the mapsheets.

The BattleTech: Clan Invasion Kickstarter goes live next Wednesday, July 17 at 1 p.m. Eastern / 10 a.m. Pacific!"

Only a few days to go until the Kickstarter goes live!!!

I've worked out that it is going to kick-off at 3am on Thursday morning our time. I'm considering setting my alarm for 2:45am that morning, throwing my wife's arms and legs off me, kicking the cat off the end of the bed (it's a Maine Coon and weighs 12kg and sounds about 2kg heavier than a 10kg weight when it hits the floor), getting out of bed and heading to my PC to pledge as soon as the Kickstarter goes live...I'll probably swing by the toilet and take a piss on the way to the PC...probably smash out a couple of deepthroated trombone farts too...

Also, for those interested in Alpha Strike, the new Alpha Strike Commander's Edition is now available in both hard cover and PDF, I have both and it is a fantastic rulebook!

For those interested in Classic Battletech, the reprint of the TechManual is now available also, I have one on the way.

I'll see if I can get a picture of Mr Lickybum at some stage!!!

In the mean time, here's a 360 of a 3D sculpt for the Executioner. To be perfectly honest, this Mech was never a favourite of mine, despite being a commonly used Mech by my favourite faction, the Ghost Bears, however this sculpt looks fantastic, and being cast in the same high quality plastic as the most recent Mechs, I'm really looking forward to owning this Mech now!

Its already gone well past the goals, and a lot more have been added.

Its huge!

Bloodnamed level appears to have sold out! (I got it on the start of the kickstarter)

If there is any retailers who want to get in on 6 starters and 6 challenge coins for 150 US, they probably should, as it appears to be great value.

Battle tech has been in a wilderness when it comes to on shelf stuff, and I'd love to see some alphastrike getting played more!
Monkey Nuts
So this Kickstarter is hammering along so far...funded in 7 minutes and at around the 12 hour mark, it has reached nearly $500,000 USD (a little over $700,000 AUD)...30 days and 12 hours to go ohmy.gif

So much very cool stuff being added, and it seems it will be delivered in three waves (although this may change), which is currently;

1 - Some electronic/digital stuff at the end of the Kickstarter Campaign (Novels, Novella, Rulebooks, Scenarios etc), and
2 - The Clan Invasion Box, the first 2 Star/Lance Packs, as well as any other rewards/stretch goals/swag/add-ons by March 2020, and
3 - Any of the additional Star/Lance packs reached through stretch goals, some months after March 2020.

Lots of really cool stuff coming out of this Kickstarter!!!

Anyway, as of reaching $500,000 USD, here is a list of the Mechs that will have been made available in sweet high quality plastic...

Amazing stuff indeed, fellow Mechwarriors!!!

I've updated my above post with the next lot of Mechs being made available up to $600K...once $600K is reached, that will be a total of 68 new high quality plastic Mechs available (with 9 of those already available in the AGoAC and Beginners Box Sets)...and don't forget we now have Clan Elemental Battle Armour as well, no doubt we will see Inner Sphere Standard Battle Armour at some stage.

Considering we have had 59 new Mechs revealed in 12 hours, I feel it may be possible that by the end of another 30.5 days, we may see all of the Mechs from TRO Succession Wars and TRO Clan Invasion being made available in high quality plastic!!!
emplion
I'm hoping that they do some ground vehicles. Behemoth or Schrek PPC carrier anybody?
casperionx
I'll be honest, I hope they decide to make decent multipart plastic mechs, the ones that came with the older starter set (the Summoner and Hellbringer), were arguably still the best they've done.
emplion
So far this is going to cost me at least $730 - up to the 750K stretch goals (assuming I don't double up on a couple more lance/star packs)
Krefey
I'm keen, but the lack of an Australian distribution point is putting me off as the shipping costs will be stupidly high if they don't find someone to distribute it here.

I've asked that this be investigated, and have had an official response that it will be investigated...and with shipping not happening until at least March 2020, that gives them over 6 months to sort it out, I'm sure they'll get an Australian fulfilment centre, and hopefully soon so they can announce it before the Kickstarter ends so that potential backers with this same concern like yourself, will feel comfortable backing.

Issue is still there though. "We'll investigate it" does not mean they will end up having a distribution point. If I back for the higher level pledges like I'd like to, that's a lot of gear to be posted in the future that I have no guarantee won't cost me almost as much as I pledged. That's really off putting for me.

I absolutely agree 100%. I'm hoping they investigate AND make an announcement before the Kickstarter ends so people can confidently back it, or not!
Monkey Nuts
Before they dropped off the Top Ten Countries list, New Zealand had about 15 backers...so between Australia and NZ, about 1.5 days into the Kickstarter, there are over 170 backers...and with 30 days to go still, and a heap more attractive goodies to come, by the end of the Kickstarter I can only imagine that will likely double...especially if we see some more retailer pledges...

So it would be well worth their while to ensure cheap postage to Australia/NZ, as it would definitely make a significant contributor happy and would also increase their backer numbers...

Any chance this becomes too big for them to handle and turns into a Robotech style failure?
Monkey Nuts
QUOTE(Mango @ Jul 19 2019, 04:20 PM) *

Any chance this becomes too big for them to handle and turns into a Robotech style failure?

There's always that chance with Kickstarters...however, last year they demonstrated the ability to put together and deliver 2 x different box sets containing the exact same quality miniatures, and those box sets are both in their 3rd print run now (with a 4th print run coming up to coincide with the Kickstarter pledges), and they did this whilst still maintaining their normal release schedules of other materials across a few different gaming systems...they already have all the infrastructure to accomplish the scope of this Kickstarter...so I feel it will run its course like a normal Kickstarter -> some delays by perhaps a few months but will be successfully delivered. The thing is, they've had this cooking away in the background for a couple years at least, and have a lot of the preparation already done, which is why they can release some of the kickstarter material (digital stuff) at the end of the campaign.

I think the main concern really is what Krefey pointed out, the shipping charges if they don't get an Australian fulfilment centre...but more people are making noise about that, and they know about the concern, so hopefully they'll take action on that.
Monkey Nuts
Some of the other Aussie backers have said to me that they have contact CGL about having a centralised distribution hub here in Australia, and CGL replied that they would look into it...Aetherworks was mentioned.

I reckon it will happen, I just hope it happens before the end of the campaign so people who currently don't feel comfortable backing the Kickstarter, will get a chance to back it before it ends...

Also, I'm going into Western QLD for a few days, so will likely be incommunicado till mid next week...hold the Battletech Kickstarter fort for me while I'm gone guys!!!
Strobe
CGL are using an Australian distributor for the Shadowrun: Sprawl Ops board game so it seems likely they will again for this is there are enough people asking.

They've updated the $1,000,000 stretch goals and have included 2 lance packs with 6 Comstar mechs in each one. Assuming these stretch goals are reached that will be it for miniatures being produced in this kickstarter, no further stretch goals will include minis.

Comstar Command: King Crab, Highlander, Black Knight, Exterminator, Hermes, Mercury.
Comstar Battle: Crockett, Flashman, Guillotine, Lancelot, Crab, Mongoose.

That just leaves the two Lance / Star rewards to be determined by feedback (rewards @ $850,000 and $950,000).
Monkey Nuts
I have returned from Western QLD after a successful feral culling trip!!!

Well, I'm ecstatic at the progress the Clan Invasion Kickstarter has made while I was away...and I think the choice to cap miniature stretch goals after $1megazillion is VERY smart, it reduces the chances of time blow-outs and significant delays...they can always do another Kickstarter for further Mechs next year or the year after (and I have a sneaking suspicion that they will!!!)..with some other main expansion box set.

We've already been given access to some of our digital stretch goals...I've downloaded them just now and will peruse them more thoroughly later tonight...the artwork pieces look gorgeous!!!

I returned to a message in my Kickstarter inbox from CGL saying that they will be selecting an Australian Distributor...I'm guessing it will be announced before the end of the Kickstarter.

I hope we see as some of the stretch goals post-$1 million, the ability to purchase multiples of certain Mechs, that would be ace, like everyone, I have a handful of Mechs that are my favourite, and I would absolutely like to have at least 6 of each of those...
Monkey Nuts
The total has just crept past $970,000 USD...I reckon overnight tonight when the US are up and running next, it will have gathered enough cash to take it over the $1000,000 USD mark and we will gain access to another 12 x Inner Sphere Mechs...still waiting for the $950,000 USD stretch goal to be announced, I'm eager to see what Star/Lance that the fans chose to be that stretch goals miniature reveal???

Very basically, there are two main ways to play Battletech...Classic Battletech (CBT) and Alpha Strike (AS).

You use the same miniatures for both games.

Both rule sets can be played utilising hexes for range and movement, like a fold out paper hex map for instance, or hex-less utilising inches/cm for range and movement on a tabletop using 3D terrain pieces etc. like most other miniatures games do.

CBT is much more rules intensive, and slower playing than AS is (but no less fun), subsequently you can have more miniatures on the board when playing AS. For a gaming afternoon you might utilise around 4 Mechs per side for CBT whilst for AS you might have around 12 Mechs per side.

You have all the normal victory conditions and scenarios that you would find in other games, ranging from kill everyone to securing objectives, and you can of course use the rules to help create your own objectives and scenarios. The game supports campaign play very well and there is a Battletech RPG which can be used alongside CBT or AS if you like to do things like run a mercenary company and negotiate contracts in a setting run by a GM, for example.

You can choose to play in a number of different eras ranging from about the 25th century to the 32nd century and different Mechs and technology will be available during each of these different eras. The main unit is the Mech, but you can also use various other units ranging from Infantry right up to warships in orbit.

Three of the things I find most interesting about the Battletech setting are;

1 - You fight with giant war machines with enormously powerful weaponry and blow each other apart, occasionally scoring a good killshot, and

2 - Although the setting has alien lifeforms, like different creatures and plant life on different planets, it is free of alien life forms that have a structured society, government, economy, military organisation or spaceflight capability, it is essentially just humans doing there usual human things of war, politics, exploration, resource grabbing and desperately trying to survive by scratching out a living across around about 2000 colonised planets in an area of about a 500 light year radius from Earth (yes it is a 2D map and not a 3D globe), and there are a great number of different factions, and

3 - I find it closer to hard sc-fi than most other sci-fi franchises, that are really more sci-fantasy. Much of the technology in Battletech, is something that we either have now or could have now if we desired, other than the ability to make "Jumps" of about 30 light years in distance.

All the rules and a huge amount of associated material are available as purchasable PDF downloads from a number of places like Drive Thru RPG, or the CGL website etc. You can get most of the current stuff in hard copy too, but some of it is awaiting reprint.

Here's a good guide that a dude put together explaining the game;

Yes!!! Fantastic news!!! The $1.5 million stretch goal will be fantastic!!!
emplion
In addition:

It's very similar to most other games
1) Initiative
2) Movement
3) Shooting
4) Hand to Hand combat

If you like Warmachine and marking off damage on you Warjacks this is very similar but much more complex. There are design rules for the all the vehicles (including mechs) and a robust point system to support it though there are online tools if you want to play non-standard designs but don't want to do all the maths.

If you can get along to a local game group and give it a try I expect your local club will have a number of dedicated players who are happy to organise a game with you.

Also - how many wargames do you know that have had multiple editions of rulebooks, etc, but where the rules basically haven't changed (since the mid 1980s !!!!). It's a solid game which you'll be able to come back to easily even with years break (it's what I'm doing) and I expect it will have a big renaissance in the next couple of years on the back of all the miniature development that is happening as part of this kickstarter.

Slow, complex and often tedious game but if you love it, you will love it smile.gif

I actually wonder how many backers have actually played the game. Do they really know what they are buying or are they just buying the name?

I know I am a bit of a negative nancy but I wonder how many people will receive their pledge, play the game and think 'what the hell is this' and dump them on ebay etc. lol

It will be interesting to see, I think it is great that it has so much interest and hopefully bring new people into a very stagnant game but I wonder if there is a cliff approaching for many backers.

I am going to wait and see if there are some bargains to be had at the other end of the kickstarter once the dust settles. But thats just me, I dont mind BTech but im not in love with it smile.gif
