Hi one and all.

I've always had a soft spot for the imperial guard. But I've managed to resist the urge to build and army until now. Part of that was high priorities in my hobby pile and part of it was the models. When I started the game it was with the 2nd ed box set and the first IG image in the Codex Imperialis was this dude:
IPB Image

But when new models were released, I just couldn't get excited about the Catchans. They were the exact opposite of what I was hoping for. But with the release of Wargames Factory's greatcoat shock troops I had the bodies and heads I wanted. I slapped on some cadian arms from a bitz seller and the test model came out well.
IPB Image

The colours in the photo are a little washed out but it was fast to paint and I kinda liked it. So I cranked out a few more.

The bases aren't finished and the sergeants have yet to get their faces painted. But those details can wait until I have enough to batch paint them. wink.gif

The one thing I can't decide yet is how to paint the vehicles. So I've done two similar tests, both are simple enough to punch out but I can't settle on either one. The bright colours on the weapon casings are deliberate. I wanted to add some spot colours (and later banners) to liven up the overall army.

Comments, criticisms and derision welcome. (Especially opinions on the demolishers.)

I like the infantry, but the tanks look odd with the camoflage next to the grey overcoat soldier.
And doesn't the purple/blue guns defeat the point of the camoflage?

It all looks reasonably good - until I saw those colored guns - that would be a no-go for me...

The coloured guns are ok, but perhaps using colour bands on the front of the tank, as shown in the Impy Guard codex? Gives you the colour you need without reverting to the cartoon 2nd ed look smile.gif

Camo looks awesome though!

Those coloured guns do not look okay. It's okay though, we all like to do LSD when we paint.

But the infantry look cool as - keep it up man. Well done.

Thanks guys, that is just the sort of thing I was after. Consider the bright gun casings gone. (They can be blacked over later tonight.)

Any preferences on the jagged first one, or large stripey second one?

Completely! But I figured that kind of oddness was sort of thing that IG dogma got stuck in. tongue.gif

Awesome picture, I'll have to see if I can dig out my copy of Codex Imperialis.

Tank color scheme fits with the old school guard armies, I remember quite a lot used to be painted in the style with the colorful highlights, my steel legion tanks are similar fairly bland camo with in your face dashes of color.

Infantry needs a color that contrasts against the overall gray in my opinion.

When it comes to the tanks I like the 1st option of camo. I see what you want to achieve with the bright colours, its not something I would do.

Have you considered other variations for unit markings? Those bright colours kill your good work.

I like how you've put IG arms on the WGF troopers, but the infantry definitely need some colour to contrast. Perhaps even put some snow on the bases.

I like the jagged camo better, to my tastes I think it fits better with the troops.

I've never been a fan of the coloured banding on the IG tanks. Can't see me, can't see me, can't see me, RED YELLOW BLUE BANDING, can't see me... stupid. Better an insignia somewhere, maybe on the sponson/side, I reckon.

Great start to what looks like a top army. Looking forward to more.

Well thing is camo is more about breaking up the outline of the tank so it makes it harder to aim at.
So having regiment bands doesn't really matter all that much, because if you really want to hide a tank you build a hide to conceal it in. Such as digging it in and using camo netting

well im the odd one out, i really like the purple on the weapons, its not overly bright and is at the right tone to sort of blend in with the grey, that could just be the photo though.

I think you guys are right about the infantry having their colours bleed a bit. So I've just added a spot of blue to the eye pieces.

Drone - You guessed right, I was going to use the tank colours as squad markings. I was considering numbering them like infantry when the colours come off.

Senexis - Thanks, hopefully I'll have a bit more done in the morning. I know what you mean about the bright squad bands though. It is very IG to accept repainting most of the vehicles to blend in with the locale, but a commissar insisting that the day-glo units markings stay.

Thrawn's Fist - In more natural light there is better contrast between the armour and coats. (This was taken before the eye piece colouring.) Is it enough?

I'm feeling inspired. Built and undercoated (most) of the rest of the platoon.

Go the Guard!

I love your infantry, they look fantastic! Great to see some variety in guard armies, they are the most diverse fighting force in the galaxy after all armata_PDT_36.gif

Keep up the good work!

those are looking good my man, makes me want to get a bunch like that for myself!
have you considered doing a bronze or brass instead of silver on the infantry? that'd break up the grey a but more (he says, believing firmly in fairly monochromatic armies >.>)
seriously, nice stuff

Thanks Fluffy, Rusty and JTG. armata_PDT_01.gif JTG, funny you should say that. Originally I agonised between painting the helmets and armour either bronze or a very pale grey (such as elf grey). I tried the bronze first and it was taking ages with the tin bitz, dwarf bronze and then the highlights. So in a fit of pettiness I painted over the whole lot in boltgun metal. And it was quick, and it looked okay, so I kept it. tongue.gif

I've finished the detailing on the first batch, and here's an example. (I chose this one as I liked how the wire stock turned out, but won't be doing any more of them.)
IPB Image

The weird thing though is the colours aren't coming out right in the photos. The coats look a tad to bright and the metal looks to dark (so they wash together in the close up photos) and the rust on the star pickets and barbed wire is striking in RL but lost in the pictures, and the bases look dark and bland. Can any one suggest how to get around this problem? (I'm not that experienced with digital photos.)
