Hi guys,
I've been a marine player since I took the plunge and bought the 2nd edition boxed set back in 1994. My first army was the Dark Angels and as much as I loved them my painting was well.... pretty poor. In 2000 it was time to start a new marine army as my Dark Angels disappeared in a house burglary and after a brief flirt with Blood Drinkers I decided I really did love painting green and started a Salamander army. I'm a slow painter at best and like many of us, I suffer from hobby ADD. I tore off on a long tyranid obsession for many years. But then the current tyranid codex came out and I've never been so inspired to marines (and a brand new IG army) wink.gif There was a frantic rush to get the army finished to 1500 for ANUCon last month. That was cool and now I'm just taking it up to 1850 for Stouthammer in a fortnight or so. ![]() Tactical Squad 1 with their rhino. ![]() The models of this squad are a mixture of metals and plastics from 1st to 3rd ed. ![]() Tactical Squad 2 and their ride. ![]() These guys are a bit more modern with all but the sergeant (and old lieutenant model) and are mostly 3rd edition pastics and hybrids. ![]() The razorback sometimes replaces the rhino for Squad 2 in game. I thought I was pretty clever using a spare landraider hatch and heavy bolters but then the current model came out in '01 and stole my thunder. ![]() A full squad of 10 scouts. A mixture of metal models from late 2nd edition and some of the modern plastics. The sergeant is conversion based on one of the metals. I figure since the Salamander gene-seed turns their skin black and eyes red then the native Nocturieans must have started out with 'normal' skin colours. So I had fun painting them in all different skin tones. ![]() A close up of the scout details. The camouflage is a little lot in the photos but I reckon the free-hand squad and company markings turned out well enough. ![]() Terminators! All old metals and 3rd ed plastics. Some of the nice modern plastic parts have been used to try and jazz them up a little. ![]() Landraider for the terminators to ride around in. ![]() And the other side. Since this was the first landraider I ever finished I got a bit carried away... I painted a crude mural on the inside and once I put the roof on I realised that you really can't see the inside of the damned thing due to lack of light. I won't spend anywhere near as much time in the inside of the next ones. But I kinda liked the idea of a crudely painted 'inspirational' landscape that bore no relevance to where the Salamanders came from or what they do. ![]() ![]() -------------------- My Tyranid album.

Time for the support units.
![]() Metal-plastic hybrid attack bikes. I painted them as a detachment from the 5th (Reserve) Company hence the black on yellow shoulder pads rather than the white on black of the 2nd and 1st Companies. ![]() The bases were an essential addition as the heavy lead side cars kept breaking and falling off. I had fun making the odd sized bases and adding in the tyre tracks to the mud. ![]() I know this landspeeder model is looking a bit tired now. But I figure since I've been playing games with it for so long, I've come to love it. ![]() The banner pole is long since lost and the only modification I've made to it is swapping the old multi-melta for a soriatias heavy flamer. With the current codex a new character the Forgefather became all but essential if I wanted to play Salamanders as Salamanders. So here is my conversion. I've updated it with the backpack from a damned legionnaire recently and only just finished painting it in the last few days. ![]() ![]() Comments, slanderous abuse and suggestions are welcome. -------------------- My Tyranid album.

Great army, really like that Vulkan, best conversion I've seen of that captain.

Thanks for the kind responses guys. The old models often aren't as detailed or crisp or the new ones (or well proportioned) but I love them all the same. I've used the partly 'cos I'm cheap and have the models on hand but also because these were the models that got me into the hobby in the first place.
When I look at the landraider all I can think of is 'creche for keeping the scouts in between battles' Oooh, I like that idea, and I happen to have another 1:35 scale teddy bear and stuffed pig on hand. Hmmmm.Good work there mate. what parts did you use for the forge father conversion? Magos Kasen was spot on, the basis is the Assault on Black Reach captain. The rest are:Helmet and breastplate - the techmarine bits from the ravenwing sprue Right arm - spacemarine biker Left arm - thumb and hand from a 3rd ed terminator powerfist, fingers from a standard bolter arm and flamer muzzle from a modern flamer Armoured skirt - from the ork nob box set Backpack - is the backpack from the legion of the damned heavy flamer and finally Master-crafted Relic Spear is just the lance from a high elf silver helm set One of my favourite bits is the 30mm bevelled base a mate gave me for the conversion. The standard 25mm looked way too small (even if it did fit) and the 40mm dwarfed the model a bit. -------------------- My Tyranid album.

I'm on a roll! Yesterday I finished the last member of my first assault squad. I had thought the squad was done before but later realised that it had 2 flamers and a plasma pistol. Oops. So when I cacked up a replacement I thought I'd have some fun with it.

Lol @ the legs on the assult marine 2nd from the right in the first assult squad!
Good work with the army, there's some very unique ideas and tweaks! How much more are you adding?? Lol @ the legs on the assult marine 2nd from the right in the first assult squad! Good work with the army, there's some very unique ideas and tweaks! Once I decide if the dreadnought is done that will take me to 1850 points. There is a chaplain who I keep forgetting to photograph too. Near finished are a whirlwind (donated to the army by OzGremlin) a devastator squad and their rhino. Half finished are a command squad (but not their captain), a vanguard veteran squad without jump packs, a third tactical squad and another landraider. Knowing my painting speed these could take ages to finish. There are a whole lot more assembled and undercoated but I'm trying to finish a 1/2 company before getting really silly. I can't quite decide if this dreadnought is done or not. Part of me likes the big slabs of green on the glacis and legs as I feel the weapons make the model busy enough. And sometimes I look at the big slabs of green and think they look unfinished.
(Either way it is a real priority as I'm happy enough to play games with it as is.) ![]() ![]() (Crap, I just saw in the pictures that I forgot the script on the purity seals.) -------------------- My Tyranid album.
