Mike has been texting me images of his progress with stuff he's been working on. He bought himself a laser cutter over the summer, installed it in his garage, and has been having fun with it ever since. I reckon it'd be cool to share the images he's been sending me - a second-person modelling diary.

First up, progress on his Samurai Castle. I've been hassling him for ages to do it - ever since he's been doing the resin houses etc for Battlefield Accessories. I've been wanting one to play Samurai skirmish games in, and I've really wanted it as a centrepiece for my JSA force in Infinity - individual floors and restricted lanes of fire in the keep, especially.

I sent him the article from Wargame Soldiers and Strategy, as a means of getting dimensions and 'the look' right.

Castle construction article

He got started on it a few weeks ago...

Trying to work out how to do sloping walls:
IPB Image

Getting the ramp up to the keep (I think he's also doing one in 15mm scale):
IPB Image

Work begins on the keep, looking at doing roofs attached to each level floor - multiple floors for the keep. Maybe do pewter stairs.
IPB Image

Thinking of using corrugated cardboard as the asian-style tiles - seems to work okay:
IPB Image

Detailing of stone onto walls and ground level begins - looks pretty good, I reckon:

And work on his bridge:

Yeah, the laser-cutter is pretty cool. Mike plays his games in the same room as the laser (in the garage) so will produce things as they are gaming. i.e "We need a measuring stick for this game, hang on a minute! Done!" or "An explosion template for this would be really handy. Hang on a minute, done!" etc etc

He reckons he'll make things on demand for buyers, rather than production runs. He does mdf bases and houses for Nic at Eureka Miniatures, so you could try requesting one of those bridges through there. Or I could ask him for you, if you like...

Ok,

so an update. School holidays, so I'm getting a bit of bench time.

Scored the internal walls and finally come up with a solution for the roof...at least the over hang which has been giving me grief.

The issue is all tied up in the thickness of the timber....When things hi squre...no drams, but on the eaves things hit at angles...so it generates big issues. On the main building I solved it by having corner plugs which the roof sections slot into (very roughly).

For the gate house It was not working, so I have gone to 1.5mm card instead...it has worked really well and given that I'll be attaching corrugated card over the top anyway, it will be think enough.

the shot show work to date. Roof lift offs to show how it can be flexible for gaming. Will engrave the floors, but not sure about the insides of the buildings.

Scored "timber" will have a series of overlays to give it some relief. Probably the vertical pieces.

At this stage I'm thinking of re doing all roof sections in card.

Very happy to take suggestions and feedback...(as long as it isnt...that looks crap!)

Latest update.

Interior work, has stairs - trying to decide whether or not to put the holes in the floors to incorporate inter-level movement.

IPB Image

Exterior - looks pretty much finished to me! The roof tiles have turned out looking very very spiffy!

Impressive. I asked my wife if I could have a laser cutter in the garage, she said no.

Yeah, details like holes in the floors for stairs help the illusion.

The Samurai Castle looks incredible!!!

It looks the perfect size for skirmishing and still small enough to place on a shelf or store away safely.

What scale is that bridge? I am looking for something for both 20mm and 28mm scale.

Please keep posting more of your work. I have laser envy but am enjoying your projects smile.gif

Latest from Mike today:

IPB Image

re:bridge, I know Mike has used the same template design for some single-storey houses in both 28mm and 15mm, so can't see why a downscale from 28mm to 20mm wouldn't work... Will try and get pics of the houses for comparison's sake.

It's an interesting facet of the laser cutter, I reckon - the fact you could make the exact same buildings in different scales.

Castle no.2

IPB Image

Interior. The stairs in these castles, according to a japanese acquaintance, are very steep! This is good for this castle, as it gives more floor space (for my INfinity JSA to move around)

IPB Image

...and some other stuff.

Some movement bases done for us by Mike to let us use our armies for other things. (eg my whfb empire become landsknecht/HRE for italian wars)

So, I got the 'prototype' castle to play with - i.e the one pictured above.

I've started painting it and found that a spray paint works much better on the laser-bits of mdf. Normal acrylics just seemed to be soaked up in the exposed laser-burnt sections. Brushpainted the tiles. Again, I think a spraycan/airbrush would work better for some consistency... might do more coats.

IPB Image

Gonna start on the wooden sections/timber of the outside, then have a serious think about how to do the interior (eg. have paper over the windows, to provide full cover in Inifinity?)

Thanks guys - still working away brushpainting the timber bits of the keep/gatehouse, not happy with how it looks so far, very streaky. My advice is, if you get one of these, spray paint the bugger first before you put it together...

Mike will be selling a few packs of these castles (i.e put it together yourself) at Littlewars Melb if anyone is interested. Won't say much else, as this isn't really a traders thread... just contact mpa541 (as above) if you wanna discuss details.

Next up on his projects list is a 'proper' 28mm scale La Haye Saint set of buildings.

Meanwhile, a picture of his resin/foam roman fort which was used in a recent game:
