So it seems that the local games club has seen a take off in Epic Armageddon, and I've been bitten by the bug.

I remembered that I always planned to build a Squat force when the models first come out in the early 90's and I even had bought a few - without ever playing a game of Epic over the next two decades.

But I have dusted them off, primed their tiny 6mm faces and begun a project to bring 3,000 points to completion.

Let's do this!

Nice progress so far. I speed painted a Epic squat army last year, I should go back and touch them up as they are nice models.

Believe it or not, they are icicles from the GW snow basing kit.

I was looking for a "Wiley Coyote and Roadrunner" style landscape with lots of natural stone columns. I messed around with making my own out of greenstuff for ages before going the icicles.

Not the perfect vision of what I had in mind but close enough and easy.

Very cool.

The only thing that I dont like are the round bases, they are very tall compared with the flatter flames bases. Maybe have a look out for shorter bases?

The round bases were the test bases where I tried out color and the crackle pattern as my delivery of the flames of war bases took 8 weeks to arrive!

The crackle effect took about 10 tries using the new GW crackle paint before I got my head around it.

The round bases won't be used for my actual army

One thing though, I have been searching the internet for other squat paint jobs but come up scarce. Are they really that rare or am I looking in the wrong place?

I dont think they are rare, possibly just alot of old photos that have been deleted over the years. Have you looked at the taccomms forums? maybe some on there?

Sadly no.

The group I play with are very 'old school cool' taking a lot of the 90's GW stuff with modern day paint jobs and basing. It's amazing how even old miniatures like things from Rogue Trader 40K look amazing with up-to-date paint techniques.

With this army I'm trying to bring them up to 2014 standards. All the photos I can find on the net are of the 90's "Clown Car" style painting.

I think I've only found a single army that I would happily field myself. - > http://imgur.com/a/5dIsE

Simple really, it's the same reason you won't see a huge number of 40K squat armies...

Squats came in somewhere during Codex Titanicus and Space Marine (1). I'm pretty sure they were around for Space Marine (2) but were dropped (together with the 40K versions) by the time Titan Legions came out. Epic 40K and Armageddon followed that.

Put simply, they were only available for a couple of release cycles (of six core releases and numerous expansions/upgrades) which pre-dated widespread access to the internet. By the time people were posting pics of painted armies, most of them were retired/replaced/looked old.

Sigh. I know that they are a dead army inside a dead game (even though I'm sure they made it to Titan Legions). However it seems that the models are everywhere - everyone from the 90's has a squat cyclops or two under their bed gathering dust. This is how I assembled my army, by borrowing all the odds and ends from my friends.

They just don't get painted. I see more weirdo Genestealer Cult armies etc rather than the short ones.

Anyway, on with the painting!

Warrior Brotherhood nearly finished! Just needing a little highlighting to be finished off on half of them and the rhinos to be done. Starting to look like a coherent formation now.

IPB Image

Beginning work on the rhino bases, so you can see how they are made. Note it is very important to ensure that all tank bases have tracks in the mud afterwards, otherwise your tanks won't drive.

Full thunderer detechment of 4 bases

Back in 2nd edition, these guys had a 3 dice firepower output, the best of any infantry (space marine devastators only had 2).

The latest ruleset gives them one AP5/AT6 missile launcher and 2xAP5 heavy bolters. Not as overpowered as in days of yore but still good against those infantry hordes.

IPB Image

The full army so far

IPB Image

I still have the rhinos to add - not completely sold on the scheme on the test one.

Any advice?

Two tone solid different body colour with green only on the sides?

OR

Solid green body with different colours on the side?

OR

Maybe even make the sides hazard stripped to make it catch the eye more.

OR

Just pick out the hatches with the hazard striping so rear, top and side hatches with the yellow and black.

I've gone for green and dark blue with Gold/brass details.

I've had a few people suggest hazard striping and I may end up going for it. It would look striking and I have heard people using it with special 2mm tape to make it work.

The only downside is that I was planning an Admech army next and using it on that.

My other idea is to reverse the colours - make the tank more brass/bronze with only a small amount of green.

I'll try a test piece of each.

The only think I have learned is to avoid red like the plague, lest it turn into Christmas Squats
