Ok so it has taken me nearly 3 years of stooging around, scheming and generally avoiding taking a plunge trying to get my praetorian army off the ground. I've gradually over 12 months accumulated a ridiculous amount of IG bits and pieces, with the solid intent of making a praetorian imperial guard army out of plastic. We shall see how it goes in the end.

I want it to be predominantly infantry, mostly in the old firing line pose praetorians were renowned for. While there is no Close Order Drill doctrine anymore, I can still see myself making movement trays etc to have them perfectly formed up on the tabletop.

Here is what I'm starting with:

Looking good, looking forwards to seeing what you can make of it! But will they be Welsh?

Looks like you've copied the same link into each pic.

As someone who is doing something similar, I'm very interested.

Very nice indeed.

Where did you score the helmets from?

More on the theme:

Mostly infantry squads, combined to make super lines of 2 ranks, front rank kneeling, rear rank standing and firing. Everyone will have bayonets fixed. Lots of dead orks (with zulu spears/shields) on bases.

There will be a veteran squad representing the survivors of Ork's Rift, where a company of praetorians held off 4000 Orks who had just massacred the majority of the Praetorian XXIV at the Battle of Big Toof River. I will be modelling on 9 of them a miniature VC, to represent the 9 private soldiers and NCOs who won VCs at Rorke's Drift, the battle on which the praetorians are modelled. The squad will be ably led by Colour Sergeant Frank Bourne. Furthermore, the army will be lead by Captains Caine and Bromhead, the two lieutenants who led the defence of Rorkes Drift and both won VCs.

Also, if you havn't seen the film Zulu (and/or Zulu Dawn) and don't know your Zulu Wars of 1879 history then much of this will be lost on you.

EDIT: yeah i screwed up the photos in the first post. has been fixed now.

Seconding the "where'd you get the helmets" question.

I got mine from Wargames Factory - their Zulu War redcoat helmets fit ok on the shouting sgt heads (IG) but the heads themselves also work ok.
The bodies are a little small compared to 28mm Heroic, but are fine as expendable unit fillers (c'mere pvt redshirt.).

The helmets are indeed Wargames Factory Zulu War 28mm British. At the moment I'm trying to source un-helmeted heads on which I can stick a helmet.

Just placed various bits orders from US Ebay bits sites for Fantasy Orcs (with spears) for my zulus and WHFB Empire Cannon Chasis/Wheels (for heavy weapon mounts), and some other random stuff to go with:

Also, my first attempt at sculpting hair for Captain Caine:

IPB Image

Will probably give it another attempt later.

Update: Assembling another 6 guardsmen inc sgt and weapons team to fill out my first squad.

There was 11 VC's handed out at rorke's drift. The most ever handed out in a battle, to a regiment. Im liking where this is going, having spent many a $ on ebay getting all the metal models to make a force. My army diary is on here somewhere lol.

He said 9 handed out to the other ranks. From memory some were handed to officers which leaves room for 11 all up.

Very nice diary though, and the Wargames Factory heads look a lot better than I would have expected. Love the paint.

Yep paintingploddy has it right as I said. 9 VCs went to ORs and 2 to both the LTs (Chard and Bromhead), 11 VCs all up out of about 117 able bodied men that were at the mission station.

The wargames factory helmets are very nice, but the heads themselves are fairly average. I'm trying to find some heads to use that have an appropriate amount of facial hair. I looked at the empire models but most of those are too unruly.

Bought a Hellhound and some more guard yesterday as well. Gonna add a few vehicles so I can get up to 1200pts or so ASAP to play some games while I get all the necessary parts to make enough infantrymen. God bless the Ebay stores that sell bits.

Yeah I know the ones you're talking about extrac32: I basically went through all the possible 28mm pith helmeted heads I could find on the internet and these (wargames factory) were by far the best. They are good quality plastic and the right scale. Only problem is the fact it costs $20 for a box of British Infantry the contents of which are all pretty average except for the helmets. All up out of a box of 20 cadian guardsmen, a box of the Wargames Factory British and 3 heavy weapon teams I can make a single 10 man squad (though I'll have to source more more firing lasgun arms from somewhere).

Got the day off today, so should have the 2nd squad assembled and undercoated, and maybe assemble my chimera, russ, hellhound and valkyrie (or vendetta, i'm undecided). I wanted to get a commissar but I visited both GWs, Good Games, Mind Games and Toyworld and only found 10 copies of the one charging with the sword and plasma pistol, but I want this one:

IPB Image

Also in the pipeline, I picked up a box of catachans that I'm gonna combine with marauder and empire parts to make some models for the Natal Native Contingent that I'll use as Penal Legionnaires or Conscripts.

Ok minor update. Did a Chimera:

IPB Image

And some more guardsmen in progress, just about ready to be greenstuffed before I chuck some heads on. Getting enough wheels from the Empire cannon frame is going to be a pain in the ass.

IPB Image

And the first sergeant. Decided to use the arms from the command frame to make him stand out a bit more. In the end I should have enough command frames to deck out all the sergeants (probably 8-10 squads) with the same arms.
